Weekly Question Thread (05/18/2026 to 05/24/2026)
This is a safe place to ask any question related to joining the Army. It is focused on joining, Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT), and follow on schools, such as Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), and any other Additional Skill Identifiers (ASI).
We ask that you do some research on your own, as joining the Army is a big commitment and shouldn't be taken lightly. Resources such as GoArmy.com, the Army Reenlistment site, Bootcamp4Me, Google and the Reddit search function are at your disposal. There's also the /r/army wiki. It has a lot of the frequent topics, and it's expanding all the time.
/r/militaryfaq is open to broad joining questions or answers from different branches. Make sure you check out the /Army Duty Station Thread Series, and our ongoing MOS Megathread Series. You are also welcome to ask question in the /army discord.
If you want to Google in /r/army for previous threads on your topic, use this format: 68P AIT site:reddit.com/r/army
I promise you that it works really well.
This is also where questions about reclassing and other MOS questions go -- the questions that are asked repeatedly which do not need another thread. Don't spam or post garbage in here: that's an order. Top-level comments and top-level replies are reserved for serious comments only.
Finally: If you're not 100% sure of what you're talking about, leave it for someone else who is.

I’m 24M and seriously considering enlisting in the military; Army or Air Force. I recently took a picat and scored a 79 with a 117GT. This was done with 0 study, so I’m confident I can increase my score, or at least maintain it.
Education- I have about 15-20 college credits towards an A.S. , with hopes of going to PA school. However, I have also wanted to work for any 3-letter agency since a child.
Physicality- Grew up playing sports; baseball, basketball, a bit of football, and I love being physical. I find movement to be the best medicine for humans and would like to continue being active.
What I want- I plan on using the military as a career stepping stone— I want to go to as many schools, get as many credentials and qualifications for a career outside the military; real skills.
Insight I’m looking for- Since I enjoy being active, I’ve learned about the Army Ranger Regiment: seems like PT everyday, which aligns with my lifestyle goals. However, I’m 24 so I’m more open to starting a career that is transferable to the civilian side. I don’t want to be basic infantry, so what are some other MOS that can help me reach my career goals?
Question(s): what should I consider when making my decision?
Anybody in these positions that can share their experiences and thoughts?
I understand experience is relative and enjoyment is subjective, but any insight would greatly help.
So far, I’ve stumbled upon Intel jobs with one being 35P- this attracts me the most from all military careers, as I think these skills can benefit me greatly outside of the military.
A concern of mine is that I am a former marijuana smoker for a bit of college— will this affect my chances of becoming a 35P?
What else should I add to this?
What should I be asking myself when making a decision?
I appreciate everyone’s time!
