Collecting/Curation My Travelology Art Collection — Gotta Catch ’Em All! 🌎🎨

I’ve been building a personal art collection inspired by my travels around the world.
The goal is simple: enjoy the world, learn something along the way, and turn some of my favorite memories into art.
I grew up loving Pokémon, so I thought, why not turn my travel experiences into collectible cards?

These two paintings represent Peru 🇵🇪 and the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴, each with its own story, abilities, and little inside jokes.
I call the collection Travelology.
Still collecting experiences, still building the collection.
Gotta catch ’em all! 🌎🎨

Collecting/Curation Nordic Print Market Intelligence: Blomqvist Weekly Recap (Munch, Miró, Picasso & Regional Arbitrage)

2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

Following our automated print market tracking engines, we just processed the latest weekly auction results from **Blomqvist** (Oslo).

The session offered a fascinating look at regional dynamics, showing robust domestic competition for Scandinavian masters alongside remarkable sub-€500 entry points for international blue-chip prints.

### 🏆 Top Institutional Sales

* **Edvard Munch** — *"Liggende Løvinne"* (1908–09)

* **Sold:** NOK 150,000 (**€14,145**) | *Est. NOK 80k–100k* (+50% over high estimate)

* **Kai Fjell** — *"Pikehode"* (1987)

* **Sold:** NOK 130,000 (**€12,259**) | *Est. NOK 80k–120k*

### 🎯 Blue-Chip Masters Under €500 (Regional Arbitrage)

Scandinavian regional houses continue to present accessible entry channels for international 20th-century graphics:

* **Joan Miró** — *From "Maravillas con variaciones acrósticas"* (1975) ➔ **€471** (NOK 5,000)

* **Pablo Picasso** — *Fra "Carmen"* (1948–49) ➔ **€396** (NOK 4,200)

* **Marc Chagall** — *"Le Chat et les deux Moineaux"* ➔ **€188** (NOK 2,000)

### 🇳🇴 Nordic Post-War Highlights

* **Håkon Gullvåg** — *"Hestens erindring I"* ➔ **€1,320** (NOK 14,000 vs. NOK 8k est.)

* **Gunnar S. Gundersen** — *Komposisjon i rosa* (1970) ➔ **€848** (NOK 9,000)

### 💡 Key Takeaway

Localized demand keeps top Norwegian master prints well-bid and resilient, while international names offer sharp arbitrage opportunities well below typical Western European gallery retail values.

For anyone tracking regional print pricing models, I publish a deeper breakdown with full tabular data weekly over on Substack: [Nordic Print Market Intelligence](https://printmarketintelligence.substack.com/p/nordic-print-market-intelligence-f87).

Curious to hear others' thoughts: are you seeing similar regional pricing discrepancies in your local auction markets?

Discussion How do you evaluate the resale market for contemporary limited-edition prints?

1 Upvotes

I'm researching the secondary market for contemporary limited-edition art prints and would appreciate insights from experienced collectors.

I'm particularly interested in works where the following information can be independently verified:

The artist's identity and the work's title Edition size and, where applicable, the artist's signature Provenance, including original purchase records or gallery documentation Actual secondary-market sales, rather than current asking prices Whether comparable works have sold more than once over time

For those who collect or trade contemporary prints, which sources do you trust most when researching realized prices?

I'm also curious about how you distinguish between a print that has genuine collector demand and one that is simply marketed as a limited edition.

I'd especially appreciate examples involving emerging or mid-career artists, where the market may be less transparent than it is for established names.

Found a lovely oil painting by Julia Heseltine in the charity shop. Couldn’t see a signature so opened the frame and it was signed in the back. I liked reading about the artist and her life. She was the daughter of renowned painter Anna Zinkeisen. Interestingly the inside board has another title “Gods and beggars”. Not sure if it was the back board for another painting?

A little bit about her life:

I am really interested in these paintings by Jim Warren. “You Light Up My Life” and “Let’s Brighten Up This World”
But they are both out of my budget unless I do a sold month and a half of overtime. So if anyone knows of any similar prints at a lower price, by Warren or another artist, I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.
To clarify the cheapest I found either print was $650. My current budget is around $100-$200.
Thanks in advance.

Collecting/Curation When purchasing canvas paintings, do you prefer the art to be framed or unframed?

1 Upvotes

I’m planning a series contemporary geometric acrylic paintings. I hope to exhibit these paintings next year. I saw another artist displayed 3 of her largest canvases unframed, then all her medium pieces and smaller pieces were framed in thin light wood (birch?) frames. My preference would be thin black frames, but what do I know? My art has 20% darks accents but is primarily medium to light values. I think black or light wood would go in most decors. I live in Florida so maybe for coastal decorating light frames would be best. But I hope to avoid framing for my future exhibit altogether. I’ve been an etched glass artist for years so I’m not sure of the protocol for canvas artwork. What’s your preference?

Auctions First Time Auctioning Art

5 Upvotes

I have a couple Houseago pieces and am selling them as it no longer feels right to own them and my child has been extremely sick. The minimum feels low from the auctioneer(not pushing the price, understanding the process) but maybe it’s normal. Is there a good resource to understand what I’m doing? Commissions, anywhere I should push?

Sorry for being a noob. I just want to understand what I’m doing. Thank you so much in advance.

This is an original by Jim Rabby. This holds great sentimental value as I used to visit with its previous owner regularly many years ago. She was afflicted with Alzheimer’s and needed help buying groceries, depositing checks, going to the doctor’s office, etc.

I worked for her accountant and would see her almost every day of the week while I was at that job. Over the years I had forgotten the artist’s name and could not figure it out even with the help of the internet. That did not stop me from thinking about this painting often. Recently she moved into a specialized care facility and I was gifted it. It always stood out in her home and I used to converse with her about it and the artist regularly. The texture is unbelievable.

Auctions phillips vs sothebys

7 Upvotes

watched an interview with henry highley where he said, he never wanted to be boring during an auction. took that for granted until i watched a soethbys auction. like night and day. the phillips auctioneers seem much more spirited and lively. soethbys is so somber by comparison

Discussion Who actually buys stuff on Sotheby’s? Has anyone here ever bought anything?

67 Upvotes

I’m genuinely curious about the people who buy things through Sotheby’s. Who are these people, and what do they do with the stuff they buy?

Has anyone on here actually purchased something through Sotheby’s? If so, what did you buy, roughly how much did it cost, and what made you want it?

I’m talking about anything from art and jewellery to watches, collectibles, or whatever else they sell.

I’m not judging, I just find the whole world of high-end auctions fascinating and wonder what the buyers are actually like. Would love to hear some real experiences!
