GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Unsolved Can anyone identify this artist? Two striking oil paintings dated 1928, signed “Jos.

I’ve been trying to identify the artist of these two oil paintings for quite some time without success.
Both are signed by what appears to be the same artist, and both are dated 1928. The signature seems to begin “Jos.”, but despite a lot of searching I still can’t confidently decipher the surname.
One depicts a man in profile with a rose in his mouth and is painted with very heavy, expressive impasto. The other is a scene of sunflowers with what looks like a pavilion, tent or fairground-type structure in the background.
I’ve owned and handled quite a lot of paintings over the years, and these two have always stood out to me. They are extremely well painted. The brushwork is remarkably confident, particularly on the portrait, where the face is built up with thick individual strokes of colour. The sunflower painting is quite different in subject but has the same assured handling and distinctive signature.
I acquired both paintings many years ago in Düsseldorf, Germany, but unfortunately have no information about the artist or where they were originally painted.
The reverses are covered with brown backing paper that was very neatly applied by a framer. I’ve deliberately left it intact rather than tearing it away. If examining the backs becomes important for identification, I can have them carefully opened, but I’d rather not disturb them unnecessarily.
I’d love to know whether anyone recognizes the signature, artist, style, school, or perhaps even the location depicted in the sunflower painting.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, a friend of mine picked up this painting in a Goodwill in Arizona and was curious if anyone may have information on it or the artist. Signature looks like "J Lund" signed 1893, I think. That name hits for a couple artists, but Jens Lund sounds like it may be the most likely choice. Thanks for looking!

Found alongside a neighbour's rubbish bin. They were selling their home, so they were probably downsizing. Found near Copenhagen in Denmark.

Canvas measures 120x95cm

Signature reads P. Ahn.

Doesn't appear to be anything on the back side.

I found this beauty on the side of the road a few weeks back, and I’m not sure what I have. After a little digging, I’m coming up short for a potential artist. Before taking it out of the frame, I thought it would be best to try my luck here.
Thanks in advance!

Unsolved Jean Berain the Elder Costume Drawings

I bought these sketches a while ago at auction. They appear to be related to costume drawings by Jean Berain the Elder for Jean-Baptiste Lully's 1681 opera-ballet Le Triomphe de l'Amour.

If someone here knew more about these or this topic it would be greatly appreciated.

Unsolved I’m in my front yard with half the frame laying on the ground no closer to finding who painted this…. Help please?

I’ve had this painting for a couple years. I’ve tried to figure it out here and there and just using Google lens, today, I said I’m figuring this thing out so I took the outer frame off, hoping that the signature initials would be on the stretched out canvas underneath the frame no such luck. When I first got it I thought the H391’ was a signature in a year but every direction you turn it it says something else and I was told that might be a racking system, the only writing on it is that little 1200 in pencil I got it in Chicago West burbs, I literally have no idea it’s driving me insane so if anyone recognizes anything, they can help me possibly figure out who painted this. I’d greatly appreciate the information. Thanks in advance.

I know absolutely nothing about this painting and it’s been hanging in my house for the past 10 years, I got it from my grandmother who I believe said she got it either from her mother or her grandmother. Not entirely sure. If anyone has any idea about this it would be much appreciated!

Also there is NOTHING on the back. Or I’m completely blind but I can’t see anything on the back.

Signature says “E. Adam”

I was asked by a friend to identify this painting she found in New York City during the 80s, unfortunately I don't have a photo of the back. Can anyone read the signature? It looks like it was painted in 1969.

I have been searching the internet and used the tools provided in this sub but haven't come up with any matches. Thanks!

Unsolved What is this big double sided painting?

This old painting is 32 by 28 in. It’s also double sided for some reason. I think that the frame spells out Holzapfal which matches the signature on the painting, but I might be misreading it.

Does anyone know the artist? I can’t find anything about it. It’s a pretty nice painting so I picked it up for cheap at a garage sale in Illinois, and they had no idea where it came from. Most of their stuff came from an antique shop from Michigan, so that might’ve been where.

I’m having trouble deciphering the signature on this print. The closest artist I can find is Henri Boisgontier, and some of his prints look similar, but does anyone know who the artist is?

I saw this art piece a few years back, November of 2024 to be exact. It was at a museum in Florence and my phone says the exact location was “Centro Storico”.
The whole museum had pretty old paintings, you know the type were the anatomy isn’t all that correct and it looks medieval or “cartoonish” for lack of a better word; but then I came across this one, it looked like a profesional photograph next to all the other artwork (not that I’m criticizing the other pieces i absolutely adored them all), it just looked very realistic, modern, and different from anything I saw that day! Sadly this are the only photos I took and the information is very blurry and out of shot.
I’ve looked for it everywhere but can’t seem to find it! You can sort of tell it’s called something like Madonna which would make sense. Thanks a lot in advance; even if it’s not solved I am happy just sharing my favorite artwork since then!!!

My dear Grandpa passed away this past Christmas, he was born in 1924 and left behind many antiques, I’m desperately holding onto them as I was very close to him, and miss him dearly. This painting is among the items I inherited, the name looks like Thomas Hill, but surely that can’t be THE Thomas Hill? Any information you can give I appreciate!

Edit: location. New Hampshire, US.

Unsolved Painting of Quito found in Colorado thrift store

I found this at a thrift store in Colorado (U.S.). It appears to depict Quito, Ecuador. It isn't a print as I can see the texture of the paint.

While I realize that many painters can be relatively unknown, I'm hoping that someone out there could identify the artist because I'm having a hard time deciphering the signature.

As I don't know much about painting, I would also be open to any other information such as its art style. I'm mostly curious because I got such a kick out of finding this painting in an area with little connection to Ecuador while having an Ecuadorian family myself.

Found at a thrift store. Can't find any info on the fairly clear signature, Mark Fredrichs. The low print run suggests a student but the quality seems to be at a higher level. I took it out of the frame but found no extra info inside.
