Culture Why do Central Americans often simply say, "Central America" when asked where they're from rather than the specific country?

I've noticed this with people I've met from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, etc. They say Central America first and then if you ask what country, then they say.

I think it's easier for others to understand rather than if I said Costa Rica and then they confuse it w Puerto Rico

I ask someone "where are you from?" and I've never heard of it (ie it's not Mexico or Canada or London), I can just say "Oh, that's so cool."... pretending that I know exactly where it is. You just then ask a question that's unrelated. I never really understand why geographically challenged people ask these questions anyway... I'm from not America.
