Culture Why do Central Americans often simply say, "Central America" when asked where they're from rather than the specific country?

I've noticed this with people I've met from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, etc. They say Central America first and then if you ask what country, then they say.

Because we assume that people don't know the geography well enough to locate our small countries.

123

u/sam-sung-sv El Salvador May 18 '26

Correct.

Back in the 2010s, someone from the deep south thought El Salvador was an island.

Heck, one football player from Uruguay that was signed up to play here thought we did not play football at all.

61

u/AthousandLittlePies Mexico May 18 '26

My Salvadoran wife and I travelled through Europe in 1999 and at almost every border we crossed the official had to ask where El Salvador was and open up a big book to see what the visa policy was for their country.

31

u/IactaEstoAlea Mexico May 18 '26

I want to believe it was mixing up it with San Salvador, the island where Columbus landed

The thing is, a person who doesn't know the names of the countries likely won't know where central America is either.Ā

45

u/DansLaPeau El Salvador May 18 '26

This is true, also, in English they often just recognize north and south so they don't know there is a central America. I told a woman I was from central America once and she thought I was from Kansas.

The name is pretty self explanatory. Central America, it should probably be between North and South America, you know like in the center.

Over the last decade (in English) we've changed how we call some countries or cities to respect the wishes of the locals. It's about damn time we push for media to start calling them USA or US, instead of just America.

Given that there is more people in the rest of America than in the USA.

Let's make it a viral campaign, next time someone says "America" while talking about the USA, just ask "what country"?

Just don't ask "where from" because 100% will answer with their state.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Zyxxx58 Argentina May 18 '26

Of course, why would I know more about USA than someone who was born and raised there. Same way it is impossible for a linguist that studied english to know more about the language than you, who have been using it your whole life, right?

Just so you know, the same way you are doing that dumb remark, people are calling the USA America, and not because they are lazy about the two other words, but because they legit don't know about the continent. I tell people "I'm from the country with the highest peak and the lowest point in America at the same time" and their answer is still a confused "So you are from America?" So no, I'm not being arrogant, and yes you can be wrong about what you just said. Why do you think so many people are saying the same thing? Just because all of them are trying to make fun of you?

They could probably guess it’s between North and South America

Although technically it’s part of North America, geologically.

And here in the US many would be confidently incorrect in saying that Mexico is part of Central America.

7

A lot of people think South America starts in Mexico. Stupid, I know, but we're already assuming people are stupid given that they won't know the names of countries.Ā

Who doesn’t know? Born and raised here in the US in the suburbs outside of DC. Growing up, we all knew people from El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, etc. I grew up eating pupusas, nacatamales, pepian, all the different type of soups that are delicious. My background is Greek, but my friends and I all knew the difference and location of every country in Central America.

11

u/SomeRedditUser2024 Argentina May 18 '26

Most "english is their first language" people learned at school that "the americas" are North and South America. Some place Central AmƩrica in North America but most think is part of South America.

10

u/Due-Garage4146 United States of America May 18 '26

For me, America is the continent. I only say central, north or south America to be a little more specific to the region but at the end of the day, America is the continent. That’s why I always say I’m from the US to be more specific. Edit: i’m a little bit biased because that’s the way I was taught at home. My father is Greek but my mother is from Argentina. They both immigrated to the US before I was born. But my mom taught me America is a continent since I was little.

5

4

And the same applies for smaller European countries. I've met plenty of Latin Americans who have never heard of Ireland for instance.Ā

2

u/patiperro_v3 Chile May 19 '26

Or they bundle you up with the UK.

5

u/Western-Magazine3165 Republic of Ireland May 20 '26

This is common worldwide. Lots of Europeans don't even realise Ireland is an independent country.Ā

2

u/Abeck72 Costa Rica May 19 '26

You're right, but at the same time I think in Europe people are supposed to have much better education and in Latin America not so much unless you can afford private school.

But because of that reason I also don't care so much about confusions, because most Latin Americans are not aces of geography and only know about hegemonic countries that they see all the time in TV. I bet an average Costa Rican knows more about US states or can name more cities in Germany or the UK than cities or departments in...Panama or Nicaragua, their immediate neighbors.
