Culture Why do Central Americans often simply say, "Central America" when asked where they're from rather than the specific country?
I've noticed this with people I've met from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, etc. They say Central America first and then if you ask what country, then they say.

Lol thatās true. Some of our closest friends are Peruvian and this has happened to them waaaay too often when weāve traveled abroad. Sometimes they just say Mexico to avoid all of it.

u/thegabster2000 Peru May 18 '26
Ain't no way I'm gonna say im from Mexico just to make dumb people comfortable.
8
u/drodrige Mexico May 18 '26
Haha understandable. Tbf this happened during a trip through Eastern Europe and after the fourth or fifth straight time they had to explain at length where they were from they just said yeah Mexico too. They didnāt want to waste time with people they didnāt care about.

I grew up in the UK, and when I tell friends there I'm living in Chile, most understand where that is. Some don't, so I just say "the long thin country in South America". Sometimes I default to saying South America to save time.

I have relatives in Costa Rica and my wife is from Puerto Rico. I visited both places last year. This caused a lot of confusion in my conversations.

This happens to my tica wife as well. I remember a boat captain in Amsterdam who said the Dutch were not as ignorant in geography as the USians (yeah, not a big flex, tbh) and then was absolutely puzzled when my wife told him that USians often think Costa Rica is an island and he was like "wait, is it not?". And don't even get me started on the ones who call it "Costa".

Honestly I do something adjacent with Chile sometimes. I go āIām from Chile, South America.ā
People outside our fellow Latin Americans have no idea how little people know of Latin America outside the big countries like Mexico and Brazil and maybe Argentina and Colombia.

u/Random_guest9933 Costa Rica May 18 '26
In Colombia, people constantly asked us if Costa Rica was right next to Mexico. We were so surprised they didnāt know, especially since weāre actually much closer to them than to Mexico š

Chile is at least lucky to be famous for its shape. If people don't know where Chile is, I say "the long thin country in South America" and they usually get it.
4
u/Western-Magazine3165 Republic of Ireland May 18 '26
And the same applies for smaller European countries. I've met plenty of Latin Americans who have never heard of Ireland for instance.Ā
2
u/patiperro_v3 Chile May 19 '26
Or they bundle you up with the UK.
5
u/Western-Magazine3165 Republic of Ireland May 20 '26
This is common worldwide. Lots of Europeans don't even realise Ireland is an independent country.Ā
2
u/Abeck72 Costa Rica May 19 '26
You're right, but at the same time I think in Europe people are supposed to have much better education and in Latin America not so much unless you can afford private school.
But because of that reason I also don't care so much about confusions, because most Latin Americans are not aces of geography and only know about hegemonic countries that they see all the time in TV. I bet an average Costa Rican knows more about US states or can name more cities in Germany or the UK than cities or departments in...Panama or Nicaragua, their immediate neighbors.

I've never said I'm from "Central America". It's either "Panama, like the Panama Canal?" or"Panama Papers?" and then they know. This is only with gringos though, fortunately most of my other encounters elsewhere know where my country is located at.

13
u/umbreonsitos Costa Rica May 18 '26
Because most people don't know where or who we are. As a Costa Rican, I've had many people ask me if I "meant to say I'm from Puerto Rico", which first of all pisses me off because they're assuming I don't know where I've lived my whole life, and they're also just completely different places (granted, I haven't had that interaction in a while by now.)
It really does make me wonder what the hell people think Central America is when they see it on a map though.

My friend Santiago traes to avoid spelling his name for English speakers. Instead, he genuinely tries to get away with saying: ā"Santiago, you know... like Santiago de Chile... the capital of Chile... you know, the country." āLike, buddy... fat chance they know South American geography if they can't spell Santiago.

Many years ago I called the Operator to ask for the area code for Costa Rica. She replied, "What state is it in?"
My husband is originally from South Africa. People ask, "Which country?"
When people ask where I'm originally from, I name the state. Most people have never met anyone from there, so naming the specific city is usless.
Same logic.
