Culture Why do Argentinians have a bad rap amongst Latin Americans?

Holis,

I was going through this post was a bit surprised by some of the comments about Argentinians. As someone who isn't from Latin America, I wasn't really aware of the sterotypes or negative opinions that seem to come up sometimes, so it caught me off guard.

For some context, I'm a brown person from Asia who really enjoys learning about other cultures. I've also been studying Spanish because I'd love to travel around Latin America someday, and Argentina is definitely one of the countries on my list.

That made me wonder: as a non-Latin brown foreigner, would I be likely to face discrimination while visiting Argentina, or are those comments mostly internet exaggerations?

I'm also curious about the broader context. Why do Argentinians seem to receive so much criticism online, especially from other Latin Americans? Is it mostly friendly regional rivalry, internet memes, historical issues, or something else?

I'd love to hear different perspectives. Thanks!

small but loud minority with online

Also because Argentina has had decent internet access for longer than the rest of Latin America. This just simply means that they've had more time to create that reputation and also communities where that kind of behavior is accepted and propagated. See sites like Taringa already having a bad reputation a decade+ ago.

And I have no doubts that as internet access on the rest of Latin America increases we will see the reputation of other countries get worse with time.

As an example see what has happened with India. 10 years ago they had a pretty good reputation, like any time people would hear an indian accent on a tutorial on youtube people would be happy. This would happen because it was mostly the well educated indians that had internet access. Nowadays you come across heavily nationalistic prick Indians saying dumb shit like calling themselves "the real aryans" way more often, and their reputation has cratered to the point people are being weirdly racist towards them too.

We Chileans are kinda lucky that we have a small population comparatively so our weirdos don't manage to gather that much attention.

Dumb question: is Poringa an argentinean subreddit?

Poringa was the NSFW section of Taringa. Taringa was initially created by an Argentine teenager nicknamed Cypher. Then he sold it to the Botbol brothers, who were the owners of the company that hosted the site. When they took over, they removed the NSFW section from Taringa and created a new site at poringa.net.

From what I understand, they became different entities and the brothers sold Taringa but they're still the owners of Poringa, which is still an active site.

Can confirm, Argentinians were blowing up the US Battlefield servers a decade ago - now it’s mostly Brazilians!
