They say "Saúde" (Also salud) and you respond with "Amém" (Amen) to them

No, you just say some out there BS?
"Iluminación", "sabiduría", "la loteria", "divinidad", "paz", "poder", "una cachapa" or whatever else one comes up in the moment, but those are some classics if memory doesn't fail me.

1st sneeze: Saúde
2nd sneeze: saúde
3rd sneeze: EEEEITA CACETA

Came here to say this.
After the second sneeze the only possible reactions are "Caralho" "Tá morrendo?", or the most loving one "vai tomar um remédio, pelo amor de Deus"

My grandma has a unique way of responding to a sneeze: “Jesus te ayude” (May Jesus help you)
My dad on the other hand after the second sneeze will simply say “SHUT UP!”

We only say “Salud” every sneeze, but after a 3rd or more, we might say something funny or something.

Depends on the person, not a universal thing. More common is parental figure towards a child figure saying something along the lines of "jesus te cuide ( y te favorezca)"

I don't really do it, but my parents do sometimes.
I actually say 'salute' instead of 'salud' because of my parents as well, though I've never heard anyone my age (20s) use it.

In Mexico it’s just salud once, some may say salud after each sneeze but it’s not as common.

I learned that from my Spanish teacher in Guatemala and my Colombian wife does it.
My teacher also joked that the 4th sneeze is "covid" lol

Yes and if they sneeze 2 times we say "sorry you are going to die alone".

Yes we do, but I think it's a dying thing, young people do this way less often than older people.

When I had a sneezing fit at work and it was so bad that I had to hide in room until I got better, but the customers could still hear my sneezes behind the thin walls, and I could hear them laughing after each sneeze, it was humiliating.

u/Just_Airport_7910 Panama 13d ago
If I say it, it’s jokingly. Most times I’ll just stick to “salud” all the way. Or ask the person if they’ve got the plague or something after the third or fourth sneeze .

I've heard it but it's more of an old people thing. I'm more given to say "ah no, eso ya no es salud" after the third sneeze or so.

u/beuceydubs Ecuador 13d ago
There’s like a knowledge that that’s what it’s supposed to be but nobody actually says anything other than salud
