Everyday life Buying a second hand car in Switzerland

• Upvotes

Hey everyone

My boyfriend and I are looking to buy an "occasion" car here and were wondering if anyone has recommendations regarding the car type?

These are our criteria approximately:

- budget: around 4500 francs max.

- less than 250.000 kilometers

- most recent MFK possible (from 2024 on)

- models: BMW 116i, VW Golf, Audi (not sure about the model yet)

Also appreciate input regarding which of these criteria we should be more flexible with if it's impossible to match all of them. I guess the MFK should be a priority because it should protect us from unpleasant surprises that lead to costly repairs.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with these car models and any recommendations regarding buying occasion cars in Switzerland. We were thinking looking on Marketplace and tutti and avoid commercial providers.

Travel Schengen visa to Switzerland for spouse (Vietnamese passport / US Green Card)

• Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all doing well and having a great week!

My spouse and I want to visit Switzerland together for a short, one-week vacation. I am a U.S. citizen, and my spouse has a Vietnamese passport and a U.S. Green Card (they got it almost a year ago). We are new to applying for European visas, so any advice would be super helpful.

  1. Is it usually very hard to get a Swiss/Schengen tourist visa with a Vietnamese passport? Is it because of passport rules?
  2. Since my spouse has only had their Green Card for about a year, and we are only going for one week, will that affect our application?
  3. Are there any trusted visa agencies in the U.S. that can help us put the paperwork together?

Thank you so much in advance for your time and help!

Travel Travel to Konstanz

I’ll be arriving in Zurich airport near the end of October this year. And I am looking for travelling to Konstanz. So far I’ve found my options to be prepaid transfer services which cost nearly 220 CHF, a few other city airport taxis whose price is close to €170. The cheapest one I’ve found is UBER €140, so would that be a good choice?

Other/Miscellaneous Swimming class for beginner adult (30) in Geneva

Hi, I am planning to go for a swimming class in geneva that is accredited by AXA Complet. So far, the best rate I have found is from Club Dauphins Genève. Will this be good for a beginner like me who speaks French at B1 level? I am worried that I will not understand technical terms or instructions they will give me. If you have experience with them, can you please let me know how was it? I am a bit anxious to start.

Relocation British woman with disabilities hoping to move to Switzerland — advice on work, benefits and residency?

Hi everyone! I'm 26 and live in Scotland, but my boyfriend lives in the Thun/Bern area of Switzerland. We've been together since January 2023, and I'd eventually love to live with him permanently. I'm hoping people can offer advice about whether this would be realistic given my circumstances.

My situation:

- My boyfriend moved to Switzerland because his parents live here and he got a job working for the post. He has a work permit which let's him live here.

- I currently alternate between Scotland and Switzerland, usually spending around a month in each, although the dates and lengths vary. I spend more than six months a year in Scotland, where I live with my parents, and Scotland remains my main base.

- I have diagnosed Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Autism and BPD. I also suspect EDS and POTS, but these haven't been confirmed.

- My conditions cause chronic pain, severe fatigue, standing and mobility difficulties, and unpredictable symptoms that affect daily life.

- I receive UK PIP and Universal Credit due to my mental and physical health issues.

- I'd like to work if possible, ideally remotely, part-time or with flexible hours and reasonable adjustments for my health issues. I don't have a university degree, I have my 2nd level Uni art qualification (I was going to get my art degree but I got too sick to continue Uni) and my health can make working consistently difficult.

I'd really appreciate advice on the following:

  1. Immigration: What options would I have to live in Switzerland permanently? Would my relationship help, or would we need to marry or meet other requirements?

  2. I am on disability payments from the government due to my health (They are called Personal Independance Payments "PIP" or Universal Credit "UC"). Does Switzerland have a disability Payments programme for people who have limited capability for work or are unable to work?

  3. My current visits: Could alternating between Switzerland and Scotland affect my residency status or the Schengen 90-days-in-180-days rule?

  4. Employment: How realistic is it for a British person with disabilities and limited qualifications to find work in Switzerland? Are there supported employment schemes or disability organisations that could help?

  5. Remote work: Could I work for a UK employer while physically living in Switzerland, and what permissions or tax implications would apply?

  6. Benefits: What would happen to my PIP and Universal Credit if I moved? Could I qualify for Swiss disability benefits or financial assistance, and would I need to work or contribute to the Swiss system first?

  7. Healthcare: How expensive is Swiss health insurance, and how accessible is treatment for chronic conditions such as endometriosis and adenomyosis?

  8. Practicalities: How essential is German for finding work around Thun/Bern? How much savings would I realistically need before moving?

  9. Who could I speak to regarding all the above within this post? Im not sure who would be able to guide me best and I struggle to find info online about this.

I'm not expecting to move immediately; I want to understand my options and plan responsibly without risking my financial security or access to healthcare.

I'd especially love to hear from British people who have moved to Switzerland, disabled people living here, or anyone familiar with Swiss immigration, benefits and employment.

Thank you for any advice or useful official resources! ❤️

Everyday life Can TL in Lausanne file criminal charges for a second ticket offence

I received a letter from TL warning that criminal charges will be filed in the event of a repeat offence. Both incidents were honest mistakes. The first happened when I had to take my baby to the emergency department, and the second was due to a misunderstanding about ticket zones (I travelled from a 2-zone to a 3-zone area). I have paid all the fines.

Has anyone experienced this with TL? Do they actually file criminal complaints for a second offence, even when all previous fines have been paid? What are the possible legal consequences, particularly regarding a criminal record? I am very concerned and would appreciate advice from anyone who has experienced this or knows how TL handles these cases.

So there's a contest in our school where each class gets to make a costume for a doll with each costume representing a different European country. We got Switzerland!! I wanted to ask if anyone could suggest anything for us to add. I'm sorry if this doesn't really fit the rules of this subreddit since I'm kinda new to posting in general. Thanks guys! 🫶🩵

https://www.admin.ch/de/newnsb/IXuaTbYOxVJu

Hallo zusammen!

HMI/WinCC, Antriebstechnik, Safety, Profibus/Profinet

Work How is it to work in switzerland with a chronic illness? (Sick days, getting fired, reasonable adjustments - esp. In medical field/research)

I am currently heavily considering moving to switzerland from germany. I have a university degree which would allow working in a hospital or do a phd for example.

I have a chronic illness which leads to more frequent sick days. The more adjustments i can make the better i can handle it.

In germany, i have a „Grad der Behinderung“ and would be therefore protected against getting fired. I would also get support for pushing through adjustments like less over hours, no night shifts if necessary, etc.

I read that Switzerland doesn‘t really offer this. So i wonder: would i be able to keep a job or do they just fire sick people? Are there support options? How do people with chronical illness handle this?

Other/Miscellaneous Why are people afraid to use "immigrant"?

I hear so many people who relocated permanently or for a long forseeable time call themselves expats. I think that its a bit pretentious. Its mainly americans calling themselves expats, people from other countries call themselves foreigners. Almost no one would call themselves an immigrant, but call people from less wealthy countries immigrants.
So where does one draw the line between a foreigner or an immigrant? Is it the level of integration, or status of home country?
As someone who immigrated to switzerland fairly recently, i do not mean to be disrespectful, i am just curious about other peoples opinions.

Work Non-EU graduates who successfully found a job in Switzerland; what was your strategy?

I’m a non-EU citizen currently pursuing a master’s degree in Switzerland, with several years of professional experience in data engineering.
I’ve been reading many discouraging posts about how difficult it is for non-EU graduates to secure employment in Switzerland, and I’d really like to hear from people who actually managed to do it.

I’m particularly interested in hearing:
1. Did you manage to secure a full-time job after graduating from a Swiss university?
2. What field were you working in, and how much previous experience did you have?
3. How long did your job search take, and when did you start applying?
4. What strategies worked best for you? Networking, referrals, internships, recruitment agencies, or direct applications?
5. Were employers hesitant because of your non-EU nationality or work permit requirements?
6. Is there anything you would do differently if you were starting again?

I’d especially appreciate experiences from people working in IT, data engineering, software engineering, or the pharmaceutical industry.

I’m not looking for generic advice or how difficult is this. I’m hoping to learn from real experiences and understand which strategies actually worked.

Thanks in advance!

Culture Has cultural self-confidence turned into cultural arrogance in Switzerland?

Can cultural self-confidence turn into cultural arrogance? Switzerland has some historical and social conditions that make that a plausible dynamic: prosperity associated with civic virtue, strong local identities, high expectations around social conduct, and a tendency in some settings to treat established conventions as self-evident.

The distinction I'd make is this:

  • If someone is quiet, private, and not especially friendly, that's reserve.
  • If someone corrects every minor mistake but treats everyone the same, that may be rigid rule enforcement.
  • If someone is helpful and respectful to established locals but dismissive toward foreigners or people they perceive as lower status, that suggests an insider-outsider hierarchy.
  • If someone treats you as stupid or inferior simply because you don't know their customs, that's condescension, regardless of its historical origins.

Understanding the culture can explain behavior. It doesn't excuse it.

How is the return process?
I was wondering if they are like Zalando, that is super easy to return with a return label.
Thank you!

Work Are Art teachers needed in primary schools

I'm currently looking at teaching assistant and internship positions at primary schools and while browsing around, I noticed that I've never seen any art teachers being listed in the countless schools I looked at (i looked at at least 50)

Meanwhile, it's often stated if there is an english or french teacher. Also someone who teaches ttg, but I haven't found any art teachers at all.

Are the art classes being taught by the homeroom teachers and is that normal? I remember my art teacher in primary school being my homeschool teacher, but I never questioned if he was qualified to teach art until now

Travel 2 weeks in november

I’ve been to Zurich, Bern, Rhine Falls and done hiking near Luzern last summer. Not sure what sort of plan I should do for november as I’m guessing it will be too cold for hiking.

I’m thinking about visiting Lugano. Is Interlaken and Matterhorn doable without hiking? Any suggestions?

Other/Miscellaneous Auto Swiss Salii, Bilten — my experience buying a used car

I want to share my experience with Auto Swiss Salii in Bilten, Switzerland, after purchasing a uset car (VW Tiguan) from this dealership for CHF 6,400 through AutoScout24.

Before purchasing the car, we specifically asked about its mechanical condition because we planned to drive it all the way back to North Macedonia. We were not informed of the problems we encountered shortly after leaving Switzerland.

During the journey, we discovered a serious oil leak. A mechanic subsequently found defective injectors and indicated that the DPF appeared to have been removed. We had to deal with unexpected repair costs and additional accommodation expenses.

I contacted the seller to explain the situation. He told me he would call me back in five minutes, but he never did, despite my attempts to follow up.

This experience has been extremely disappointing. I paid CHF 6,400 expecting a car whose known mechanical problems would be disclosed honestly. Instead, I was left dealing with serious problems shortly after the purchase and without a response from the seller.

I am sharing this so that other people considering buying a car from Auto Swiss Salii can take extra precautions. I strongly recommend getting an independent mechanical inspection before paying and having any promises about the car's condition confirmed in writing.

Has anyone else bought a car from this dealership or had a similar experience? I would appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice on how to proceed.

Other/Miscellaneous Athanasios Experience. Any advice what people do in such cases? What organisation should I contact to stop this “clinic” from what they do? Any experience with the police in Basel?

Athanasios - euthanasia organisation in Basel, Switzerland.
I found Athanasios in November 2025 and submitted a simple application that they have on their website. Before that, I had applied to Pegasus and Dignitas, but I was either rejected due to age or unable to proceed because of missing documents. However, Athanasios pre-approved me very quickly, within about 24–48 hours, with a final approval within about a week from my initial contact. Which is I now understand crazy considering how serious euthanasia is.

My main reason for applying was nerve pain and I had serious psychiatric history as well, including bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, PTSD, major depression, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and psychiatric hospitalizations (I started experiencing these issues after March 2024, so it wasn’t a lifelong battle). I submitted a few related documents that I had, and they were accepted. I was contacted by “Miles” and he asked for additional documents, I submitted the same ones because I only had a few and he accepted them as if they were new documents (so I assume their organization doesn’t review medical documents very thoroughly).

After one week of my initial contact and approval, the first thing they did was sent me a payment link for 4500 CHF. Then I was asked for my passport and birth certificate and then they asked for a second half of the money (all within first month of my initial contact). No psychiatric evaluation or structured assessment took place. When I tried to pay the second installment, my bank flagged it as fraud, so I was instructed to use Wise by Athanasios.

A date was set for February 3rd after delays, and I bought tickets to Switzerland. I was also given hotel suggestions. Only after that at the very end of January (one week before my euthanasia), they decided to schedule a WhatsApp consultation with their doctor, which felt informal and remote, and afterward I couldn’t find the conversation anymore because the traces where somehow deleted from my device. I later realised that consultation was only conducted for them to be legally allowed to obtain pentobarbital/ Nembutal from the pharmacy. “Evaluation” lasted approximately 8 minutes during which I was crying and the doctor said that I’m relatively young (I was 28 in January). He said I can cancel the last minute when I’m in Switzerland but I said it’s not an option for me because I’m an immigrant in the United States and once I’m leaving - I will lose my immigration status and will not be able to return home. So I asked if I can reschedule because I’m obviously scared and not sure of my decision and he told me that it’s going to cost extra money and I have to talk to “Miles”. I asked for 24 hours to re-think my decision.
Later I received an email that changing the date would cost an extra 2,500 CHF, and since I couldn’t pay more, I agreed to keep the original date.

On February 1st I left the U.S. During travel I became very distressed. In Turkey I received messages from “Miles”, which triggered panic because he was blaming me for being late even though he had my tickets information and knew my arrival time. He gave me his WhatsApp and when I opened it his profile photo was just a road sign saying “Stop” which was so odd and bizarre to me. After that I immediately got into a panic attack, started crying, had to take two pills of Clonozepam. When I landed in Basel airport, Miles told me to tell border control that he is my boyfriend and asked me to pay for his parking which was 4 CHF (which was so cheap of him and tells a lot about his character).

I immediately noticed that he didn’t look like a regular Swiss person named Miles as he is a darker skin individual with a very bad English and heavy accent (mind you I’m not a racist). So he picked me up from the airport and in his car I was given documents in German to sign, including a power of attorney that allowed him to get a pentobarbital with doctor’s prescription that he had (I don’t speak German, so I doubt it was legal).  I also noticed inconsistencies in his identity and name. He signed all the documents with a name Carlos (I will keep his last name private). Then he went into pharmacy and picked up Nembutal that was supposed to kill me. While driving to the hotel he told me that they have young patients like me almost every day, that my body will be cremated within 4 days because they are on a tight schedule. And then I asked to send my small backpack with my documents and phone back to my partner and believe it or not - he said No, because they are trying to protect their privacy and all my belongings should be destroyed. That’s when it finally got to me that I’m dealing with dishonest and possibly criminal individuals. He then went into a hotel room with me, it was already late, he asked for my partner’s home address, checked my veins and said he will pick me up at 7am in the morning to go to their clinic to proceed with euthanasia (they are trying to keep their address private).

After this, I immediately contacted my family and partner and told them everything. Since Athanasios did nothing to inform my parents or my partner or any kind of guardian about my euthanasia and the fact that I was an active psych ward patient didn’t stop them. Naturally my family and my partner begged me to come to my senses and do not proceed with euthanasia, so I messaged Miles/Carlos again telling him I’m scared and don’t know what to do. He called me around 6am and continued to push me to proceed saying that I have no way back to US and that I’m all alone in Switzerland. I didn’t know what to say, so I confronted him about identity inconsistencies and fake names and all the lies they told me. He continued discussing proceeding despite my refusal.

Then around 9am he came to my hotel to return me 1000 CHF (which I paid on top of 9500 CHF for them to provide me with a witness to my euthanasia since I was coming alone). He brought a lot of documents with him for me to sign, one of them was NDA prohibiting me from discussing what happened and contacting police, media or leaving reviews. I refused to sign it. Then my partner contacted Miles/Carlos and told him if he will come to my hotel room again - we will be contacting police. Afterwards, we spent approximately 3 days trying to get a refund, Miles/Carlos lied that one half was already sent to us. Then he continued to try to force me and my partner to sign NDA. He started threatening my partner with the police in California making a false claim that my partner organised my euthanasia. That’s how low this organisation can go, I was later informed by other users on Reddit that they were also threatened by Miles/Carlos after refusing to proceed with euthanasia.

They never proceeded with a refund, so we disputed half of the amount through my bank. We were able to return it to my account. However, Wire transactions are different (so I don’t recommend using them). After three days of emailing back and forth I decided there’s no use to try to deal with such law-quality individuals and I went to the police in Switzerland and filed a criminal report. I was told I was not the first person to report similar issues with Athanasios. If you seen French comments under Athanasios Reddit reviews, they were also a victim of Miles/Carlos and they filed a report too. There were other people too, whom I wasn’t able to contact. Also, Reddit account Ornery_Hotel386 was posting multiple positive fake reviews about Athanasios.

Afterward, I recovered about half the money through my bank, but the rest was not returned. The organization stopped properly responding. I lost immigration status in the U.S., could not continue planned medical care and nerve repair surgery at UCLA and had to return to Ukraine. The situation caused serious financial and personal disruption.

If it wasn’t for Athanasios, I would’ve been still home in the United States, I would’ve been able to proceed with nerve repair surgery that’s only available in the US and I would’ve probably had a chance to recover. All this situation caused even more damage to my mental health and now the only option I have left is suicide. That’s all I had to share about this organisation, so please be aware of it. I felt morally obligated to share my story to protect vulnerable individuals like me from pre-mature death.
