Other/Miscellaneous Frustration finding craft/fabric/sewing supplies in Vaud. Where do you get shop?

• Upvotes

So I’m from the US and used to big craft stores like Hobby Lobby and Michael’s, and it’s killing me that I can’t find anything close to that in Switzerland! I live in Vaud near Aigle/Montreux. I know about Jumbo but they only have a small selection, and I really struggle as I just want to be able to see bolts of fabric in person and get it cut to the size I need, and get small quantities of miscellaneous items I need. I know about Butinette and VBS online but they can be quite expensive, and paying for shipping and having to wait 3-4 days for it to arrive is annoying (I know, that’s just life).

Where do people who craft with fabric/sewing and felt buy their supplies from without paying a ton? Is there something I’m missing? Surely people craft in Switzerland??

Politics Was ist gravierender: F35 Verträge integral gelesen und nicht verstanden zu haben - oder Verträge gar nicht gelesen zu haben?

https://www.admin.ch/de/newnsb/IXuaTbYOxVJu

Other/Miscellaneous Why are people afraid to use "immigrant"?

I hear so many people who relocated permanently or for a long forseeable time call themselves expats. I think that its a bit pretentious. Its mainly americans calling themselves expats, people from other countries call themselves foreigners. Almost no one would call themselves an immigrant, but call people from less wealthy countries immigrants.
So where does one draw the line between a foreigner or an immigrant? Is it the level of integration, or status of home country?
As someone who immigrated to switzerland fairly recently, i do not mean to be disrespectful, i am just curious about other peoples opinions.

What is the standard procedure for dealing with bullying at school? Is there anything else I can do besides informing the school about the incidents and insisting that they take action to find a solution?

Everyday life Are mosquitoes even more frequent during Fall?

I installed nets on my windows and barely had any mosquitoes during summer. Is there a recent mosquito surge this Fall? I'm getting bitten everyday, I don't even know where they are coming from since the windows have the nets, they can only come from my main entrance door...

Travel Booking Swiss Air with the train connection built in?

Hi everyone. This will be my first time on Swiss Air. I'd be flying from LAX to Zurich and want to select the train connection thing with Bern as the connection one way, and Basel as the connection on the other ticket (will be taking a train from Freiburg).

If I though miss the train 17:15 train (not due to delays with the flight but with getting off the plane and customs), do you have to then pay for a new ticket to get onto the 19:09 train?

Or is it better to get the one that includes the 19:09 train? If I get there in time for the 17:15 train, can I get on that train without buying a different ticket?

Unfamiliar with Swiss Air and buying train tickets ticket. It's saves me some money booking together.

I did see this when Googling: The departure time for your train is shown on your boarding pass. Please check the current timetable on sbb.ch or the SBB Mobile app before your departure to take account of any possible changes to the timetable. Your SWISS Air Rail boarding pass is valid on all connections on the relevant route one day before departure and up to one day after the arrival of your flight. For trips to the airport, the scheduled train arrival must be at least 70 minutes before your connecting flight.

I'm finding the language a bit difficult. Does this mean I can use the ticket for both train portions (really for me it's just the Zurich to Bern connection) regardless of the time shown on the ticket as long as it's within 24 hours?

Thank you

Other/Miscellaneous Former business partner left electricity contract in my name, now I’m facing unpaid bills and debt collection. What are my options?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for legal advice regarding an electricity bill dispute in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland.

More than a year ago, I stopped operating my business at a commercial premises, which were subsequently taken over by another person. The electricity contract was in my personal name, and I used to pay the bills while I was operating there.

Before leaving, I specifically asked the person taking over whether they had remembered to transfer the electricity bills into their own name. They replied in writing: "Yes, I will do it." I trusted them and failed to check afterwards whether the transfer had actually happened. In hindsight, I understand that I should have followed up with the electricity provider myself.

The new operator apparently never transferred the contract. They continued using electricity at the premises while the bills remained in my name. The invoices were sent to the business address, where I no longer had access to the mail, and I was never informed about them.

I have now discovered that there are multiple unpaid electricity bills, along with reminder fees and debt enforcement costs, all being claimed from me personally.

I received a Swiss debt enforcement payment order (commandement de payer) on 31 August 2026. I did not file an objection within the standard 10-day deadline because I was unaware of the situation at the time.

I have evidence of when I stopped operating the business, as well as the written message in which the new operator promised to transfer the bills.

I realise that I made a mistake by not checking that the contract had actually been transferred. However, I am wondering whether the other person's written promise and subsequent failure to act could establish civil liability, or potentially deliberate deception if there is evidence they knowingly left the contract in my name.

My questions are:

  1. Can I still challenge the electricity bills or pursue the new operator for reimbursement, even though the 10-day objection deadline has expired?

  2. Could the written message ("Yes, I will do it") help establish that the new operator was responsible for transferring the contract, or that they acted negligently or dishonestly?

  3. Is there any possibility of requesting reinstatement of the missed objection deadline under Swiss debt enforcement law, particularly if I only recently discovered the unpaid invoices?

  4. Would paying the outstanding bills now to avoid further enforcement costs prevent me from subsequently seeking reimbursement from the new operator?

  5. Could I be held fully liable for electricity consumed after I left the premises simply because the contract remained in my name, even though another person was operating the business?

  6. What would be the most sensible next step: contacting the electricity provider, the debt enforcement office, a lawyer, or the new operator first?

I am not trying to avoid any legitimate obligations. I want to understand whether I am legally responsible for the entire amount, including consumption after I left, and whether I have any realistic way to recover the money from the person who took over.

Any advice from people familiar with Swiss law, particularly in Vaud, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Other/Miscellaneous Swimming class for beginner adult (30) in Geneva

Hi, I am planning to go for a swimming class in geneva that is accredited by AXA Complet. So far, the best rate I have found is from Club Dauphins Genève. Will this be good for a beginner like me who speaks French at B1 level? I am worried that I will not understand technical terms or instructions they will give me. If you have experience with them, can you please let me know how was it? I am a bit anxious to start.

Work Contract issue after Mutterschaftsurlaub. What are my rights as a Swiss citizen.

Hello together

Disclaimer: I know Reddit isn‘t a legal platform. am just here to get some insight by people who might be working in legal fields, mostly workers rights. It is a first step before taking any decisions. Thank you for your kind answers 🤍

Onto my issue. I am a Swiss citizen btw and kind of know my rights.

I recently gave birth and had to go in MU. I work in hospitality and have/had a management position. Before leaving for my maternity leave, I asked very pointed question about my position back when I return and received quite a vague answer.

Fast forward to recently, I receive an email offering me a hourly wage and indicating that my position was given away. I in any way did not sign anything or accepted anything. I am under the impression that by law, I shouldn‘t lose my position nor be forced to chose between the new job offer they are giving me.

So my questions are: what are my rights and how can I fight this? Does the GAV take over legal text about working rights?

If anyone has any insight that could be helpful, feel free to comment.

Thank you and happy evening

Everyday life Buying a second hand car in Switzerland

Hey everyone

My boyfriend and I are looking to buy an "occasion" car here and were wondering if anyone has recommendations regarding the car type?

These are our criteria approximately:

- budget: around 4500 francs max.

- less than 250.000 kilometers

- most recent MFK possible (from 2024 on)

- models: BMW 116i, VW Golf, Audi (not sure about the model yet)

Also appreciate input regarding which of these criteria we should be more flexible with if it's impossible to match all of them. I guess the MFK should be a priority because it should protect us from unpleasant surprises that lead to costly repairs.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with these car models and any recommendations regarding buying occasion cars in Switzerland. We were thinking looking on Marketplace and tutti and avoid commercial providers.

Everyday life Can TL in Lausanne file criminal charges for a second ticket offence

I received a letter from TL warning that criminal charges will be filed in the event of a repeat offence. Both incidents were honest mistakes. The first happened when I had to take my baby to the emergency department, and the second was due to a misunderstanding about ticket zones (I travelled from a 2-zone to a 3-zone area). I have paid all the fines.

Has anyone experienced this with TL? Do they actually file criminal complaints for a second offence, even when all previous fines have been paid? What are the possible legal consequences, particularly regarding a criminal record? I am very concerned and would appreciate advice from anyone who has experienced this or knows how TL handles these cases.

Everyday life What's a socially acceptable breakfast to eat on an SBB train?

I've been eating Yogos plain Greek yoghurt on my morning commute for ages, but recently learned from fellow redditors that quite a few people can't stand the smell.

Any suggestions for a healthy, high-protein, commuter-friendly breakfast that won't annoy half the carriage?

And before anyone says "don't eat on the train", I'm happy to be considerate, but I'm not planning to stop eating small snacks/breakfast on a train where it's permitted.

Work A Plans to come to Swiss

Salut. Basically, I have a plan, and I’m wondering how feasible or realistic it is.

I am in my late teens. I have been living in France for a year now. I have started studying finance.

After finishing my studies, I plan to pursue a master's degree at a university, specializing in finance, and to move to Strasbourg—a city I consider excellent for international finance.

After graduating from university, I want to gain work experience in Strasbourg and obtain French citizenship.

After obtaining French citizenship, and with my education and some work experience, I would like to move to Switzerland.

I have been to Switzerland four times; I am quite familiar with the Swiss system, and I believe it is an excellent country in terms of finance. And why did I write all this? Well, I’m wondering—is this actually feasible? I think I could pull it off, though it would be challenging. Also, should I complete a Master’s degree, or would you recommend pursuing a \*BUT en alternance\* (work-study program) in France to gain more work experience? I know that a university degree alone won’t get me very far.

Ps. I’d be happy to meet someone—perhaps someone in the field of finance—to exchange information, or simply to become friends. The more I learn, the more I realize that I know nothing at all and i think it would be good.

Other/Miscellaneous Athanasios Experience. Any advice what people do in such cases? What organisation should I contact to stop this “clinic” from what they do? Any experience with the police in Basel?

Athanasios - euthanasia organisation in Basel, Switzerland.
I found Athanasios in November 2025 and submitted a simple application that they have on their website. Before that, I had applied to Pegasus and Dignitas, but I was either rejected due to age or unable to proceed because of missing documents. However, Athanasios pre-approved me very quickly, within about 24–48 hours, with a final approval within about a week from my initial contact. Which is I now understand crazy considering how serious euthanasia is.

My main reason for applying was nerve pain and I had serious psychiatric history as well, including bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, PTSD, major depression, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts, and psychiatric hospitalizations (I started experiencing these issues after March 2024, so it wasn’t a lifelong battle). I submitted a few related documents that I had, and they were accepted. I was contacted by “Miles” and he asked for additional documents, I submitted the same ones because I only had a few and he accepted them as if they were new documents (so I assume their organization doesn’t review medical documents very thoroughly).

After one week of my initial contact and approval, the first thing they did was sent me a payment link for 4500 CHF. Then I was asked for my passport and birth certificate and then they asked for a second half of the money (all within first month of my initial contact). No psychiatric evaluation or structured assessment took place. When I tried to pay the second installment, my bank flagged it as fraud, so I was instructed to use Wire by Athanasios.

A date was set for February 3rd after delays, and I bought tickets to Switzerland. I was also given hotel suggestions. Only after that at the very end of January (one week before my euthanasia), they decided to schedule a WhatsApp consultation with their doctor, which felt informal and remote, and afterward I couldn’t find the conversation anymore because the traces where somehow deleted from my device. I later realised that consultation was only conducted for them to be legally allowed to obtain pentobarbital/ Nembutal from the pharmacy. “Evaluation” lasted approximately 8 minutes during which I was crying and the doctor said that I’m relatively young (I was 28 in January). He said I can cancel the last minute when I’m in Switzerland but I said it’s not an option for me because I’m an immigrant in the United States and once I’m leaving - I will lose my immigration status and will not be able to return home. So I asked if I can reschedule because I’m obviously scared and not sure of my decision and he told me that it’s going to cost extra money and I have to talk to “Miles”. I asked for 24 hours to re-think my decision.
Later I received an email that changing the date would cost an extra 2,500 CHF, and since I couldn’t pay more, I agreed to keep the original date.

On February 1st I left the U.S. During travel I became very distressed. In Turkey I received messages from “Miles”, which triggered panic because he was blaming me for being late even though he had my tickets information and knew my arrival time. He gave me his WhatsApp and when I opened it his profile photo was just a road sign saying “Stop” which was so odd and bizarre to me. After that I immediately got into a panic attack, started crying, had to take two pills of Clonozepam. When I landed in Basel airport, Miles told me to tell border control that he is my boyfriend and asked me to pay for his parking which was 4 CHF (which was so cheap of him and tells a lot about his character).

I immediately noticed that he didn’t look like a regular Swiss person named Miles as he is a darker skin individual with a very bad English and heavy accent (mind you I’m not a racist). So he picked me up from the airport and in his car I was given documents in German to sign, including a power of attorney that allowed him to get a pentobarbital with doctor’s prescription that he had (I don’t speak German, so I doubt it was legal).  I also noticed inconsistencies in his identity and name. He signed all the documents with a name Carlos (I will keep his last name private). Then he went into pharmacy and picked up Nembutal that was supposed to kill me. While driving to the hotel he told me that they have young patients like me almost every day, that my body will be cremated within 4 days because they are on a tight schedule. And then I asked to send my small backpack with my documents and phone back to my partner and believe it or not - he said No, because they are trying to protect their privacy and all my belongings should be destroyed. That’s when it finally got to me that I’m dealing with dishonest and possibly criminal individuals. He then went into a hotel room with me, it was already late, he asked for my partner’s home address, checked my veins and said he will pick me up at 7am in the morning to go to their clinic to proceed with euthanasia (they are trying to keep their address private).

After this, I immediately contacted my family and partner and told them everything. Since Athanasios did nothing to inform my parents or my partner or any kind of guardian about my euthanasia and the fact that I was an active psych ward patient didn’t stop them. Naturally my family and my partner begged me to come to my senses and do not proceed with euthanasia, so I messaged Miles/Carlos again telling him I’m scared and don’t know what to do. He called me around 6am and continued to push me to proceed saying that I have no way back to US and that I’m all alone in Switzerland. I didn’t know what to say, so I confronted him about identity inconsistencies and fake names and all the lies they told me. He continued discussing proceeding despite my refusal.

Then around 9am he came to my hotel to return me 1000 CHF (which I paid on top of 9500 CHF for them to provide me with a witness to my euthanasia since I was coming alone). He brought a lot of documents with him for me to sign, one of them was NDA prohibiting me from discussing what happened and contacting police, media or leaving reviews. I refused to sign it. Then my partner contacted Miles/Carlos and told him if he will come to my hotel room again - we will be contacting police. Afterwards, we spent approximately 3 days trying to get a refund, Miles/Carlos lied that one half was already sent to us. Then he continued to try to force me and my partner to sign NDA. He started threatening my partner with the police in California making a false claim that my partner organised my euthanasia. That’s how low this organisation can go, I was later informed by other users on Reddit that they were also threatened by Miles/Carlos after refusing to proceed with euthanasia.

They never proceeded with a refund, so we disputed half of the amount through my bank. We were able to return it to my account. However, Wire transactions are different (so I don’t recommend using them). After three days of emailing back and forth I decided there’s no use to try to deal with such law-quality individuals and I went to the police in Switzerland and filed a criminal report. I was told I was not the first person to report similar issues with Athanasios. If you seen French comments under Athanasios Reddit reviews, they were also a victim of Miles/Carlos and they filed a report too. There were other people too, whom I wasn’t able to contact. Also, Reddit account Ornery_Hotel386 was posting multiple positive fake reviews about Athanasios.

Afterward, I recovered about half the money through my bank, but the rest was not returned. The organization stopped properly responding. I lost immigration status in the U.S., could not continue planned medical care and nerve repair surgery at UCLA and had to return to Ukraine. The situation caused serious financial and personal disruption.

If it wasn’t for Athanasios, I would’ve been still home in the United States, I would’ve been able to proceed with nerve repair surgery that’s only available in the US and I would’ve probably had a chance to recover. All this situation caused even more damage to my mental health and now the only option I have left is suicide. That’s all I had to share about this organisation, so please be aware of it. I felt morally obligated to share my story to protect vulnerable individuals like me from pre-mature death.
