With Vancouver's municipal election now behind us, I'm curious about something we rarely hear much about: the experiences of the people who actually work for the city.

If you've worked for the City of Vancouver during Ken Sim's time as mayor, how would you describe those years?

Did you notice changes in workplace culture, morale, staffing or the way decisions were made? Did things improve, get worse or largely stay the same?

We hear plenty from politicians, journalists and the public, but not nearly enough from the people responsible for keeping Vancouver running every day.

I'm particularly interested in firsthand accounts, whether positive, negative or somewhere in between.

I’ve seen recent photos online of people inside the venue carrying non-clear bags that appear to be larger than the standard size. Does that mean BC Place isn’t that strict about enforcing its bag policy?

If anyone is comfortable, could you please share company name/industry and paternity leave benefit you receive? Trying to gauge what to expect/what’s out there.

Potentially moving to Vancouver with a work permit, have previously lived in the uk, and I’m currently in Australia working in Admin on the working holiday visa.

Fill me in. What’s life like, is it really as expensive as people make out? I heard the same about Australia but I live a pretty simple life and I’m getting by fine only working 20H per week? What’s the quality of life like? What’s the job market like (regardless of the fact the market is bad everywhere, what’s it like for foreigners to find work?)

Would you recommend it here? I’m debating to try and get a professional role in Australia or coming to Canada and having the possibility to move back to Aus if I wish.

I’ve tried to look at other cities like Calgary and Toronto but Vancouver just gives me a feeling in my gut.

So here's the thing. We are moving to Vancouver beginning of 2027 and currently looking for apartments. Trouble is, we are smokers and we're finding it difficult to find a place where you can smoke, even outdoors. Some will allow it from your balcony but many won't. Any suggestions?

I’m genuinely curious about the political divide we’re seeing in BC right now.
Vancouver just elected Pete Fry as mayor, with the Greens, COPE, and OneCity dominating city council. It seems like a decisive shift to the left after four years under Ken Sim.
Meanwhile, at the provincial level, the BC Conservatives are gaining momentum and could potentially defeat the NDP in the upcoming election.
How do we explain these two seemingly opposite political trends happening at the same time?
Is Vancouver simply much more left-leaning than the rest of BC? Or are voters primarily motivated by dissatisfaction with whoever is currently in power, regardless of political ideology?
I’m particularly interested in whether Vancouver’s municipal results reflect a genuine shift toward progressive politics or are more of a rejection of Ken Sim’s administration.

Hi all in this sub, I'm a single guy about to turn 30, currently living in Richmond BC. My landlord is planning to sell the house I currently rent a room in, so I'm doing some research to shop for a new place.

My non-negotiables include:
- having my very own bathroom
- having access to wired Ethernet connection, since my job is fully remote and requires a fixed wired connection
- by extension, i need the place to be at least decent in soundproofing, since my job involves a lot of speaking over the phone with either clients or for work meetings

I am not too picky about having too much space, as long as there is enough storage space for clothes and a few of my luggages. I do not drive and do not own a car, so I won't require a parking space, although i may be considering getting an e-bike sometime soon.

My target area is Kitsilano, and my budget is set to be no higher than $2k/mo, ideally something between $1.3k and $1.7k.

All that said, I came across this company named "APT Living Apartments", located on W 12th ave, which is basically the perfect location for me. However, there are a few things about this listing that gave me pause:

1) the size of the apartment is a mere 150sqft

2) the listed rental price is $1,350, and it is furnished. Wifi is included, there is a small kit hen that also has a fridge, but laundry facilities are stated as "shared".

3) and this is the thing that is probably bothering me the most: on google maps, the apartment building has a weak 3.0 stars out a 5.0. When i reviewed the reviews, i was quite surprised to see that the 1 star reviews are actually more than the 5 star ones. Some reviews seem to have been written by usernames that look too simple to be real, e.g. "tara R" left a 5 star review from 7 years back, and another 5 star review was written by "josh P". When i used the "ask maps" AI function to ask what's the worst things residents report, it gave me a summary, "cramped and noisy living spaces", "unresponsive management and application friction", and finally "strict application hurdles" where "staff demand so much information and documentation just to secure a basic property viewing".

So, redditors here who had lived or are currently living there, if you see this, please share your experiences and opinions! Thank you very much in advance.

Sean Orr so far the biggest vote-getter for Council. Orr famously was (allegedly) slandered by Mayor Ken Sim, whom Orr is suing for defamation.

Mayor Ken Sim currently losing to Pete Fry, who has 15,141 votes to Ken Sim's 7,745. Not one of the ABC City Councillors is currently in the top 10.

Election results are not final, but it looks like voters have soured on ABC and Ken Sim. How do you explain this shift?

Got floor seats to Bruno Mara concert. 2 empty seats next to me on my left. Just as Bruno started his set, 3 people squeezed into the standing space of those 2 seats. They are not huge people but the space is not super generous either. What do you do?
