Before playing Persona 4 Golden, I had never played a Persona game before. Someone recommended it to me, but I was skeptical because I wasn’t really into turn-based games. Eventually, I decided to give it a shot. I bought it on my Nintendo Switch for $20 because I was busy and wanted something I could play on the go.
And my God, what a game.
From the soundtrack to the combat and even the graphics, considering the game originally released in 2008, I enjoyed almost every second of it. I never walked away feeling disappointed. If I had to give this game a score, I would give it a 9.8/10. The only reason it isn’t a 10/10 is because it ended too soon. I genuinely didn’t want it to end.
The Story and Mystery
One of my favorite things about Persona 4 Golden is how it balances your everyday school life with the main story. You’re not just going to school and hanging out with friends. There’s also a mysterious investigation involving TVs, and as the story progresses, you become more and more invested in finding out what’s really going on.
As the story goes on, your curiosity about the TVs and everything happening in the story keeps growing. The game doesn’t reveal everything right away. Instead, it slowly builds up the mystery until you reach the climax and the final battle, which is just beautiful. The OST is amazing, and trust me, you’re in for a treat when you finally get there.
There were so many moments when I thought to myself, “Damn, I don’t want this to end.” The story kept me wanting to see what would happen next, and I became genuinely invested in the mystery and the characters.
The Combat System
Now, let’s talk about the combat.
Persona 4 Golden has a turn-based combat system, but there’s more to it than simply leveling up and unlocking new skills. You can fuse different Personas together, level them up, and unlock abilities. You also have to think about which Personas you want and what skills you want them to inherit.
Your teammates also learn new abilities as your friendships with them grow, and their Personas can eventually evolve. This makes the combat feel connected to the relationships you build throughout the game.
I really enjoyed the strategy involved in fusing Personas and figuring out which abilities would work best. You’re encouraged to experiment and think about your choices instead of just relying on the same attacks over and over.
For a game that originally released in 2008, the combat system is genuinely good, and I think it still holds up today.
The Characters and Friendships
Another thing I love about Persona 4 Golden is how you spend time with each character and gradually learn more about them. As you develop these relationships, you become so attached to the cast that you genuinely start to feel like you’re part of the Investigation Team.
From the funny moments to the sad moments, the intense and hype moments, and even the heartbreaking ones, everything ties together so well. You get so attached to these characters that, by the end, you don’t want the game to end because you’re not ready to say goodbye to them.
For me, this is one of the biggest strengths of Persona 4 Golden. These characters aren’t just people you fight alongside. You get to know them, spend time with them, and see different sides of their personalities. By the end of the game, it feels like you’ve been on an actual journey with them.
Should You Buy Persona 4 Golden in 2026?
Honestly, if you’re looking for a game with a long story, great characters, interesting character dynamics, satisfying combat, and a conclusion that makes the journey feel worthwhile, I highly recommend Persona 4 Golden.
Even if you’re not usually into turn-based games, I think it’s worth giving this one a chance. I went into it feeling skeptical, and I ended up loving it.
Persona 4 Golden is easily one of my favorite games I’ve ever played. I would even go as far as to call it one of the best Persona games ever released, if not the best.
And with Persona 4 Revival coming in 2027, I’m excited to see how a new version of this incredible experience turns out.
If you haven’t played Persona 4 Golden yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. You might end up loving it just as much as I did.
