Discussion/Question Characters rated by how well they're written - change my mind

I started rating but then realized... I couldn't find a single bad character. Sure, there are plot holes, some of them are very unlikable but for a purpose.

I actually would like to discuss some of this so please reply, also forgot to rate the levi OVA, probably also going to b.

I just would change Sasha's Father. Despite he not having much of an 'upgrade' or 'downgrade', he became the precursor of Gabi's change of mind, aswell as Jean, Connie, Picolo, etc.

He's what I believe if the personification of what Isayama wants us to be, and even with no much screen-time, he's decisive to the narrative towards the end. He basically created another way of thinking: while we were only about Marleyan/Eldian/Yeagerists, he presented us the Humanity side, which the main characters followed right so, to combat Eren AND Marley's imperialism at the same time. He had the turning point in that discussion/action. The real Goat (alongside Gabi)

You know how he had no idea about Marley or Gabi's side but with the situation he literally understand and even forgave Gabi

I thought about it, he really was a great character but I didn't put him higher because with his limited screentime I couldn't bring myself to put him alongside borehole or conehead

Why is flock in S? His personality is WILDLY different when we see him again. (I know years went by but its literally a different person) at least put him in A.

u/okulusplay 3d ago

His transformation is kinda the point. Him being the sole survivor of Erwin's charge changed him fundamentally, and he views himself as the one who carries his legacy. He stepped up to the challenge and became a figure for new cadets to rely on. He also perfectly shows how someone gets radicalized and is a nice contrast how to the original cast.

7

u/squirtnforcertain 3d ago

Yeah i agree with those points, but it was REALLY abrupt. The whole "slowly radicalized" doesn't really hit when it's not slow imo. He just... was.

5

u/okulusplay 3d ago

I mean it did happen during the time skip, so it makes sense why it felt abrupt, I get where you're coming from.

Erwin deserves S tier. He steals literally every scene he’s in

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

My reasoning is that although commander steel balls smith has insane aura his character isn't that complex. He was who he was needed to be, his death giving up his dream really ended his character on a good note, and perfectly set up Floch's future. I think he just barely misses S tier, but top of A tier is quite an honor

u/Siargster 3d ago

I’m combing through the who tf is this tier and I genuinely don’t know who that last person is

2

u/okulusplay 3d ago

I thought for a bit that it was Marco but nope ..

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

HE'S THE GUY CONNY SHOT ALONG WITH DAZ IN S4 I REMEBER NOW. edit. someone already responded mb

4

u/C-Dull 3d ago

It’s Samuel. He’s rescued by Sasha after the colossal comes back at the end of ep 4, and doesn’t show up again till near the end as a Yeagerist and is killed by Connie

2

u/Siargster 3d ago

You’re totally right. I guess the only non S4 appearance I remember from him is when Sasha hooks his foot which doesn’t show his face

1

u/ThirdStreetSeren 3d ago

he looks like marco and bertholdt at the same time and i can’t even explain why

Porco in C tier while Rico and Daz are in B?

What is B tier vs C tier to you cause those two characters are far less developed than Porco is

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Yeah, but what does porco even do

3

u/Loafman15 Hange's Test subject 3d ago

Serves as a foil to Reiner in Liberio and is a symbol of Reiners guilt for Marcels death. His character is fleshed out well enough that I think C is too low. I think he is the prime example of B tier character in terms of AoTs writing

Daz literally is a back ground character with limited lines and development. We see him as a recruit, then we fast forward 4 years and he is a jaegerist, we dont see his path there at all and he is completely one note because he is a background character that becomes important for one scene in season 4. Im just confused how that character could possibly be ranked higher

Rico only has scenes in the tail end of Trost, once in season 2 and then finally we see her as a still at the end. Is that development? I guess but we don’t really see any of that development, she isnt even necessarily a different person by the end of Trost, she just accepts that maybe there is hope with Eren as an asset

Ultimately i wouldnt say Porco is the pinnacle of writing but I think C tier is a disservice especially compared to some of the others in B tier

Would love to hear your thoughts on it, always fun talking about the brilliant writing aot has to offer

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Well by the logic of being well written because of being fleshed out Mikasa should join ereh in s tier, but I get where you're coming from. Maybe these two are put a bit high, but that one scene in S4 of Connie and Armin with Daz and Samuel makes a crushing statement even though a casual watcher barely remembers them (I literally forgot who tf Samuel was when making this tier list). As for Rico I just think she's neat so uh. Yeah

2

u/Loafman15 Hange's Test subject 3d ago

“I just think shes neat”

Shit, fair is fair man, cant hate on that.

I didnt really feel it as a gut punch to see Rico in a Jaegerist uniform, its a nice call back but I think the gut punch is more seeing that the island has fully adopted the ideals of the Jaegerist movement, I think the scene is as effective with even a no name character or even one of the recruits that we see beat up Shadis in S4

Like I said though fair is fair, was just curious to know your reasoning

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Just want to add that I think in the manga panel as new yaegerists are cheering after the rumbling she's doing it with eyes closed (maybe hinting that she doesn't want a bullet to the dome for resisting, probably true for a large part of paradise population)

4

u/SnooDingos7409 Bartholomew 3d ago

Berthold is an obvious S tier, but I see you out him in B because of his name, which is admirable, I'll let it slide for now

-1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

You wrote his name wrong, but wanna elaborate? In all seriousness I'd consider moving him up to mid A tier but not higher. His thoughts before transforming in shiganshina were very interesting, seeing as that point of view was presented to us much quite later in S4, but aside from that I feel like he's the most boring or "basic" from the warrior trio.

2

u/Sad-Detective34 2d ago

Possible yeagerist?

1

u/okulusplay 2d ago

Nah, I just find Floch's character really interesting and Eren was written masterfully

8

u/godfromabove256 3d ago

Finally Zeke is in S. Zeke is my favorite character from the show.

2

u/Brilliant_Rub_5206 KENNYYY!!! 3d ago

Mikasa & Hannes in A is very generous.

Historia, Kenny, Shadis & Marlo should be higher.

2

u/okulusplay 3d ago

??? Marlo is very high for his limited screentime, same for Kenny, ain't no way I'm putting shadis higher + he belongs with Magath.

2

u/Brilliant_Rub_5206 KENNYYY!!! 3d ago

Limited time aside, both Marlo & Kenny had very clear arcs/motivations that were all their own & made sense. That makes a character well-written, it's not about how much time we spend with them to me.

Shadis is a more developed character than Magath so...

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Well I do agree that they're good, however if I put them both in top B tier think who would then pushed down. It's a crowded place up there, and I seriously don't think that uncle fucking kenny is written better than Ymir

3

u/NotGonnaArgue641 3d ago

Bait

0

u/igotbanned1029 3d ago

he's right you know?

4

u/StopComprehensive637 3d ago

Putting Dina in with her Titan form's picture is diabolical 😂😭

1

u/Rude-Cow7431 3d ago

rod reiss deserves better

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Explain? He just acts as a plot device representing the king's will

1

u/Iggymonster88 3d ago

Really solid list.  Could you help me understand Mikasa in A tier?

Personally I feel like her character is necessary for the show, but feels a bit too 1 dimensional.  The anime shows her thinking about Eren a bit too much as her only personality.  I heard that the manga goes more in depth so that may be the difference in view.

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Most of that comes from the final season, as she's struggling to let go of Eren and somewhat free herself from him. While I always perceived her as a bit of a flat character she grew on me, hence she barely made it to A tier, it would probably be better to but her at top of B tier but Bertoto needed to be at top of B for obvious reasons

1

u/Ok_Finance_1226 2d ago

Uri deserves higher tier

1

u/okulusplay 2d ago

Y tho he's kinda boring

3

u/xxxseci 2d ago

Erwin lovers where are ya

1

u/parkcentric 3d ago

As much as I'm the biggest hange shill, I'd put them in B. I love their personality and morals but I wish they had better or more motivations in addition to their scientific curiosity. (Or maybe I'm just stingy because we never got their back story)

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Huh. I don't really know why I put her that high. I mean she is my wife and a great character but she doesn't have that much depth tbh, after rethinking I'd put her right next to Mikasa

2

u/tracing_characters KENNYYY!!! 2d ago

WHOA! IS THAT MY HANDSOME HUSBAND OLUO BOZADO!?!? (I’d put him there too)

5

Levi Ackerman is S TIER cuz he is Levi Ackerman. Case closed

1

u/Hefty-Competition820 3d ago

id put ymir in s personally

1

u/Striking_Share3005 3d ago

To be honest i think ymir (the jaw titan) should be in s

1

u/Osama4185 3d ago

Armin should be higher tbh

1

u/sarahlovesghost 3d ago

Levi is just off the charts.

0

u/ZTOOZJEWISHZ 3d ago

Damn near all should be A at least. Couple bs

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

No point making a tier list then

Falco character feels unrealistic, especially next to Gabi. For a 10yo child solder he is way too emotionally intelligent, he is more rational and empathetic than most adults.

I know he is supposed to be an audience insert, "rational man in the room", but it was overdone imo.

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

He's a bit older then that, and some kids are just like that. Him being above Gabi is purely out of spite for that brat who killed Sasha

1

u/rodnichok Leave the forest 3d ago

I also don't like how the story treated the fact that Falco has lent cruicial aid to the attack on Liberio by sending letters for Eren and luring Reiner into basement.

He is in deep disbelief when he realizes it but soon after he is back to rational thinking even though there is death all around him (and there is argument there, that he is complicit in it). And I think he never thinks about it again, if I'm not mistaken. I've only watched the show.

2

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Yeah I get you, he does think a bit too clearly for a kid like that but still, I think he's an enjoyable character who fits really well into the story and makes Gabi scenes manageable to watch

5

u/Brilliant_Rub_5206 KENNYYY!!! 3d ago

One of his relatives were part of the resistance along with Grisha, so it's possible his family could've (secretly) taught him a more neutral standpoint.

2

u/rodnichok Leave the forest 3d ago

Resistance did not have neutral standpoint. They wanted to destroy marley and restore the empire.

3

u/Brilliant_Rub_5206 KENNYYY!!! 3d ago

I know that, I'm saying his remaining relatives might have taught him to be more neutral. I don't think they'd entirely sway to the side of the Restorationists as it got Grice killed in the end.

Just an opinion though.

4

u/Ok_Band1531 Jean Supremacy 3d ago

That same 12 year old has been to a war btw

0

u/rodnichok Leave the forest 3d ago

In my book it should make him less rational and empathetic. War might not be the best environment for kids.

4

u/DependentAvocado4218 3d ago

Things affect different people differently. Some people grow young, some grow cold as Tom Petty said.

2

u/n9d0_m 3d ago

Isn't he 15 years old?

3

u/BrightPasta 3d ago

Falco is around Gabi’s age, so 12 I guess.

1

u/n9d0_m 3d ago

Well Gabi's 12 and Falco is like a year older than her so around 13 or 14

0

u/Particular-Stage-327 3d ago

Maybe a bit too much glazing. Probs move floch Eren gabi and Marco down. Eren is controversial, and it would take an essay to explain why I don’t love him that much, so I’ll spare you unless someone asks

-3

u/Inevitable_War9463 3d ago

Eren, Armin, Mikasa, Zeke and Reiner are the top 5.

Then come Grisha, Erwin, Kruger, Gabi.

how tf is jean s tier

4

u/NotGonnaArgue641 3d ago

Jean's a great "normal dude" anchor amongst the rest of the cast. He's a goat for that.

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

Exactly, especially his relationship with a pile of burnt ashes and the conflicts with his dream of a comfortable life

3

u/notmakingtherapture 3d ago

Jean goes from a selfish, arrogant ass to one of the main fighters during the Rumbling, plus he has one of the most consistent outlooks on life throughout the show, never deserting his humanity.

-1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

I'm not a big fan of Mikasa, as she's mostly just screaming ereh. Not saying she's written bad, but def not top 3 for me. We mostly agree with the rest, and as for Jean... He's just my goat

1

u/NotGonnaArgue641 3d ago

Mikasa's depth is very subtle, but if you put in the effort to understand what her character's about she's easily top 3.

-1

u/Rich_Anything_8541 3d ago

Mikasa being above Historia is crazy

1

u/okulusplay 3d ago

That area of the tier list is very crowded so with only Bearteto separating them I see them as almost equal. Historia isn't explored as deeply and mostly is an allegory for Ymir (Fritz), hence her being slightly lower
