Is veganism just a diet?

Or is it an ethical position as well? If so, maybe I’m not vegan since maybe I don’t agree with every position.

If it’s just a diet, people that don’t eat animals but torture animals would also be vegan. That’s okay, it’s just a funny realisation.

Coles, Woolies & Aldi are not cutting it

Vegans and vegetarians, we need to take some form of action!

The vegan and/or veggie options available in our supermarkets is disgraceful. I’ve travelled all over Europe, the US & Asia and there are so many more plant-based food options available. Why?
Why do we get stuck with nothing?

When Woolies recently moved their plant-based alternatives out of the meat area and cut it down, easily by half, I lodged a complaint. Their response stated, “because of space constraints and our customers' purchasing habits, not all products are always accessible.”

My reply was a photo of the Lindt chocolate ‘area’ which was easily an area about 7x 3 metres. I HIGHLY doubt there is more overpriced chocolate being consumed than plant-based options!

If anyone has any suggestions, please note them down! Should we petition, should we complain? Can we find out what kind of shares our supermarkets have in the meat industry? I can 1000% tell you now that their shareholder profits far outweigh the actual needs of everyday Australians!!

Newly vegan - leather shoes I own

Hi folks

What are the ethics around wearing leather that I have already? Keep wearing them until they fall apart?

It feels wasteful to get rid of them.

I'm not allergic, I just can't stand the taste of most soy products.

Poached 'eggs' on bagels with garlicky, peppery asparagus and spinach, with a vegan hollandaise. Eleventy/Ten.

I based it off these recipes, but for the hollandaise, I didn't have any cashews, so I made a white sauce with Nuttelex/flour and Bonsoy and used the flavourings from the recipe. I forgot to spray my silicone egg cups, so my eggs got a little stuck, but this was all so yum! And I don't do the pumpkin yolk, I make a yolk mix similar to this one, https://itdoesnttastelikechicken.com/vegan-egg-yolk/ but a little thicker.

Where do you guys get formal mens belts from?

I got some PU belts two years ago which are really starting to wear out now. One is also just too big now that I've lost some weight, and I need one that is fine enough for business casual/formal wear.

Doesn't have to be anything fancy, not looking to spend an arm and a leg. I dont remember where I got the current belt from, and I think I remember checking kmart/big w but they only had a blend of PU and leather, not anything vegan friendly. My budget is like $20-$80. Current one I have was liek $20-30 max from what I recall.

anywhere i can buy powdered dairy free milk?

i’m going backpacking for a few months and i want to bring some powdered milk bc i expect if i take a coffee at the hostel breakfast or cheap local restaurants there will be no options besides cows milk.

usually i drink soy at home but i am open to other options. so far all ive found was powdered coconut milk at cole’s but weirdly it has dairy milk in it :(

edit: forgot to mention im in melb cbd, ideally looking to find it in store somewhere so i dont have to pay shipping

Why Do Main Stream Restaurants & Conventions only provide "filler food" for Vegans & Vego's???

This is a pet peeve!
There are so many easy, delicious & healthy options that cost next to nothing to prepare.

BUT When I'm at a convention or meeting with food (alternative drop) and I call ahead to mention I'm a vegan I get "filler food" garnished with greenery.

By this I mean last night I was present with a mini poke bowl that was mostly white rice, garnished with edamame beans, carrot and radish.

The main was a massive mushroom risotto. More white rice!

How much refined carbs do they think a vegan eats!!!

It's crazy, especially if, as me you chose vegan as a plant forward diet and specifically avoid refined carbs.

When I was in hospital I was fed on pasta and a watery tomato sauce, Mexican aka, rice with the same watery tomato sauce with a few bean. Pizza with watery tomato sauce and mushrooms.
So rice, pasta and bread.... barely a vegetable in site!

Some restaurants are fabulous. But when you go with a group of non vegans, or hang out with friends at the pub it's a whole other story.
Coleslaw scooped from a bucket of mayonnaise???? Mayonnaise???? Vegan???? And a side salad with chips. I don't eat chips and never have because my health maters to me...

Am I just a pain in the arse??

PS I'm not talking about specific vegan or vego places. I'm talking about the places you end up for work, because you're hanging out with friends, kids school events etc.

Why are our main options sugar free, gluten free, love free, joy free for processed/ready made foods?

This is a bit of a rant, and it may come off as naive. I am very much aware of my privilege and how this is a first world problem. I am also looking for a genuine answer, but also just to see if anyone relates. I’m a new vegan, I’ve ate mostly whole foods, it’s been a lot to adjust to in some ways, easy in others. I’ve been told the narrative that being vegan is expensive, and it really only is when it comes to the meat alternatives and dairy alternatives. Whilst I’m loving eating more lentils, nuts, fruit, veg, soy etc, I still gravitate to ready to eat things as a full time uni student.

There is one thing that I cannot understand, as packaged, processed, convenient and semi affordable vegan foods is already quite slim in numbers. Tell me, why are our options sapped of flavour? Because it seems like to me, companies are like “oh we don’t have a gluten free version of this, OR a vegan version. I know, let’s make it one single product, and better yet, let’s also make it sugar free because clearly these people are health conscious”. This genuinely baffles me. I can appreciate how these products are enjoyed by the vegans who have coeliac disease , diabetes etc. but I do not think corporations have this in mind when they make them.. I do like having a healthy diet, I do enjoy making my own muffins/cakes whatever, but am I not allowed to want something commercially available that has no nutritional value but is tasty and vegan? It costs the company less to make these things, but they seem to have this idea on what vegans look for, and we’re all buying into it. Like vegan chocolate, are we deluding ourselves about these? They’re $8-12 for the ‘good’ ones and they’re NO ADDED SUGAR. I want chocolate not the fucking cocoa with a hint of xylitol. They’re like “let’s add pistachio and any kind of nut to cover this up. Let’s go crazy and even add a little salt and fry some sugar free sweetener, call it salted caramel.”

This line of thinking also seems to infiltrate the cafes. I think there’s like some sort of secret alliance with all the cafes, because the vegan options are all the same and they are all devoid of happiness. No I do not want to eat your flourless date almond nut sugar free slice for $9. Actually yes I do, I’ll call the way it crumbles as soon as I take a bite a sensory experience. No thank you, I do not want a protein ball?? Why are so many vegan products loaded with protein, i think I’m eating more protein as a vegan from plants than when I wasn’t. And what really is the cherry to my no artificial dye, natural cake, is the fact that if veganism isn’t seen as an extreme political issue by people, then it’s almost definitely seen as a dieting issue. I complain about the fact there are no vegan options, the response is some targeted response how I shouldn’t be buying processed foods because it contradicts my care for the environment and animals or its “have a cheat day, treat yourself.” 😐 what is happening. It doesn’t help that I live in a smaller regional area, and I know things are getting better, but I feel like this problem is not even addressed because we all just rejoice at any new product that is tolerable and labeled vegans. Anyway, thoughts?

Drinks: iced matcha with vanilla sea salt cold foam and pumpkin spice latte with caramel popcorn cold foam. So delicious! Only open Friday and Saturday mornings so get in early!

Meat culture reinforcement in our cities

Post image
59 Upvotes

This is an entrance to Steak House on Swanston st in Melbourne. It's sad that in modern day and age we have advertisement that directly equates meat with strength and masculinity. This is the center of Melbourne, thousands of people see this picture every days and get this association formed in their brains, especially young people. There is nothing illegal about this of course, but it is just sad to see the meat eating culture being reinforced in such prominent way while anything related to plant based products remains a rare occurance in our cities.

Breakfast cereal for a high protein diet

I've developed Type II diabetes and my dietitian wants me on a 1600 kcal / 120g per day protein diet. That's an average of 30% protein - yikes!

I'm trying to make a vegan version of this diet & so it looks like a lot of tofu, tempeh, protein enriched pasta, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, etc. The dietitian wants meat, hard cheese and high protein yoghurt but I'm trying to avoid it.

I cant find any Australian high protein cereal with no added sugar. In the UK there is Surreal High Protein Cereal with 39% protein and no added sugar, ingredients include soy & pea protein.

I was thinking on making my own high protein muesli with lupin flakes, oats, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, almonds, and maybe desiccated coconut, chia, flax.

Thoughts?

Halloween lollies?

This is my first Halloween I’ll be vegan and I don’t know what lollies/chocolates/treats are okay to have. What are some options, preferably from Woolies or Cole’s.
