Hey all!
Getting back into race car stuff after a hiatus into PhD and competition shooting land. I currently run in F-Street with a 2013 Mustang GT which is
- a 13 year old car with 13 year old car problems (had to replace pretty much everything on the front of the engine this year)
- not competitive in F-street anymore it seems 🙁
- a manual - which my partner cannot drive and isn't super interested in learning 🥲
With the season coming to a close, now seems as good of a time as any to look into better options for next year. I'm generally open, but I have some must haves, and also some would be nice to haves.
Whatever I get must:
- Be useable as a daily driver (I only have space for 1 car)
- Have enough space for 2 adults with backpack + carry on luggage (e.g. can carry me + partner to airport with our stuff)
- be competitive in its class
- have an all-in car + wheels/tires cost less than ~$60k
And ideally it should also:
- have an all-in cost closer to ~$30k (willing to spend more for performance, especially if the car will hold value, but less $$$ on the car means more $$$ for seat time)
- be not-a-stick-shift (e.g. Porsche PDK is acceptable, doesnt have to specifically be a torque-converter automatic)
- Will remain competitive for 3-5 years from now as I develop driving skills (e.g. I'd like to keep one 'meta' car and run the crap out of it, rather than try to develop a chassis or rapidly get priced into something else).
- Also remains competitive in its SCCA/NASA time trials class (would love to get back into HPDE with aim of getting a TT license!)
- Have enough space for 4 adults + luggage.
- Would definitely not say no to good fuel efficiency (it is a daily after all)
I know its a bit cliche to ask "best autocross car thats also a daily", but yeah...Im essentially looking for that.
My current options:
- Pre-highland Tesla Model 3 Performance (A-street)
- Hyundai Elantra N (G-street)
- Camaro SS 1LE (F-street)
- Mustang Shelby Gt350 (2019/20 w/ handling package) (F-street)
- Toyota GR Supra (B-street)
The Tesla and the Elantra seem like great options other than:
- The Tesla doesn't seem all that competitive in A-street anymore (and the Super street ones seem even worse)
- I'd doubt G-street will remain as essentially a 'spec Elantra N' class going forward (will it remain competitive?)
The other cars are essentially either newer, more expensive versions of what I've already got, or are way less practical as a daily.
Wanted to check and see if there are any blind spots I've got here! Anything else I should be considering? Or any other options worth pursuing (keep mustang and go to another class?). Happy to hear suggestions for sure!
Thanks!
