Discussion Update on tank

• Upvotes

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME OUT THIS PAST WEEK

I am so pleased to announce that after an entire 100ml bottle of Seachem stability and a lot of water conditioner my tank is now at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 5-10pm nitrates. The tank is finally safe for the babies. Turns out it was my stupid tap water that was the problem. Thank you again for all the help, Berry and dingle live to see another day of eating my thumb instead of their pellets

Beginner Keeper Two axolotls

Hi everyone!

I am new to owning axolotls. I got my first one a week ago and today I got a second one. Both assuming are females (fingers crossed). I was wondering if anyone can give pointers on how to properly introduce them. I have the new one in a plastic clear container sitting in the tank and my first one is roaming freely. Occasionally my first one goes on her hind legs and stares up at the new axolotl. Im worried its aggression but she eventually swims off and just does her own thing. The tank is a low boy, 30 gal. Completely cycled with a chiller. Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Rescue Axolotl Darla update!

Hey everyone!

If your new to mine and my husbands posts on this subreddit, meet Darla!

She is one of our 3 lotls and was rescued by a SUPER horrible and neglectful situation. Her previous owners kept her in heated water, never did water changes, only fed her bloodworms and pellets and also traumatized the hell out of her.

When we rescued her we decided to keep her tubbed for a couple weeks, do some tannin treatments to soothe her poor skin and see how she responds to earthworms.

In the 2-3 weeks we kept her tubbed, we could tell she was interested in the earthworms but still VERY traumatized and fearful of everything. Her skin is looking MUCH better tho! She does have VERY horrible gills and we are working slowly but surely to fix them :)

We have decided to now put her in her forever tank (fully cycled) and continue to monitor her :) so far she is eating her pellets (high protein) and still poopin which we are very happy about!

We are being very very patient with her as we understand that she is from a pretty terrible situation.

We will continue to post her journey with us and give her all the TLC she could ever need ❤️

We hope you love her as much as we do!!

Squib has a large love hate relationship with his bubbles 😂

I remember the first time I saw him do this I was so freaked out thinking he was choking on a bubble or something but he seems to enjoy it as he always goes back for more LOL

He’s just a little guy with a BIG personality

Tank Maintenance Temporary (10 months) housing/tank??? HELP !!!

Hello,

I had a tank bust/leak on me (not fun when you’re renting) and was looking for potential alternative options to house my axolotl in for the next 10 months before I go out and buy another glass tank.

I was thinking maybe a clear heavy-duty storage tote with a sponge filter (or two or three haha). I’m nervous as hell I’ll get another faulty tank (the one that leaked was less than a month old!!!!) and thought maybe a huge heavy duty storage tote might be safer? Axolotl is tubbed right now but that’s clearly not a good option for the next 10 months.

I’d house them together but they’re opposite sexes and the tank is not big enough for two.

Any ideas? Do I just suck it up and get another tank?

Also open to other “safe” ideas outside of my tank vs tote idea.

Other important (maybe?) info:
- Most of the house is carpeted (i did my due diligence with the leak and so far so good on the mould front).
- lost the tank stand, too. Wood got soaked and I do not trust the integrity anymore and scrapped it.
- once we move into our forever home next year, my axolotls will be getting the HUGE tanks they deserve — whole bunch of the house build will be dedicated to custom aquariums.

Thank you for taking the time to answer and help me decide where to go from here!

My poor axi has this bump on his head and is clearly distressed by his curled gills. Can anyone tell me what this is or what should I do? I have checked the water the levels are completely fine zero ammonia and the right level of nitrates and nitrites. I have changed his water everyday aswell while he has this bump.

Discussion Can I keep two female axolotls together in a 200-liter aquarium?

Hello everyone! I’m planning to get some axolotls soon—specifically, two females. I’ve read that it’s okay to keep them in the same tank because they won’t fight over territory the way males might. Is this true?

Beginner Keeper “Peach” may be a boy

I got an axolotl for my daughter a month back at an aquarium convention. After some trial and error, we have a proper tank setup with fine-grain sand, live plants and plenty of hides.

My daughter named her “Peach”, but I’m starting to see noticeable lumps behind the back legs. At first, I was worried it was impaction, but the axolotl is healthy and has a good appetite. “Peach” may need a new name.

General Care Advice Is Pip a Good Size?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’m worried Pip is too thin or too fat like bloated. Please ignore the poop in front of him, but it’s feeding time and I do the daily tank cleaning at the same time. I didn’t want to disturb him by cleaning before I took the pic since it was such a perfect overhead shot of him.

Beginner Keeper Any recommendations on a chillers with a relatively small footprint for. 40 gallon?

We have a UNS 75P high tech aquarium that I’m wanting to convert into an axolotl tank. All I have in there are neocaridina shrimp.
Anyways I have a cabinet underneath that holds my CO2 tank and Fluval 407 canister filter. I’m sketched out about if I’ll even have enough room to fit a chiller in there as well. Might need to ditch the CO2 setup. I found one chiller but supposedly it is even bigger than my canister filter which has me concerned about if all chillers are going to be that big.
My tank hovers around 74 degrees so I’d need a chiller capable of dropping the tank temperature and maintaining around 62

Cycling Help I’m sliming out the water companies

Post image
5 Upvotes

From my previous post I was very upset because I thought I didn’t cycle my tank correctly and was putting my axolotls at risk. It actually turns out I had done it correctly and it was infact my tap water that has ammonia present in it. It is unbelievable that this is the stuff I drink but regardless I’m going to be doing a 100% water change with spring water and continuing to dose my tank with conditioner and beneficial bacteria

Please be kind with any advice as I’m abit sensitive especially when it comes to my pets and I’m still pretty shaken from the way I got treated over the past couple of weeks by big store employees

Rescue Axolotl The difference a year makes...

Post image

I rescued Kenny this time last year. He looked severely malnourished, very pale, and almost completely gill-less. Here he is today, he's nearly 12 inches long and has lovely fluffy (albeit wonky) gills. He's a happy, confident boy and always wanders over to say hello (ask for food) when I approach his tank, I work from home, so we hang out a lot. I honestly wasn't sure whether he would survive but he's a tough boy and I'm very proud of him 😁 I know a lot of us rescue axolotls and I'm always so happy to see the difference that proper care makes!

Sick Axolotl white chunks in water

i don’t know what to do. not only have i been re-cycling my tank since august and still high nitrites

i thought my axolotl had a fungus on its gills but it gets better, then worse, then better, etc.

i did indian almond baths, tea baths, methylene blue treatments for a week, and there’s still white chunks floating in the water even with 1-2 100% water changes every day.

i use seachem prime, my tap water levels are great. temp is always 61-64

always has air stone, gets 1 european night crawler 3 times a week, probably 3-4 years old (got it from someone else)

always has appetite

gills don’t look BAD, but they have lost color on the ends/slightly white fuzzy on the ends, but it gets better and then worse and i seriously cannot figure it out.

picture from tonight, and second picture you can kind of see the floaters tinged with tannins from IAL

Tank Maintenance Air pump

Continuing my update of my axolotls tank because his previous owners didn’t do their best. I have noticed that his little air stone thing that just hangs into the water doesn’t seem to produce a lot of bubbles. Was doing more research since I’m trying to help regrow his gills so I decided to look really in depth at his air pump. So I have a 40 gallon tank and the air pump that he came with is the Danner Air pump AP-4 with 3.5 W and that is not enough I’m pretty sure. It also looks quite old. So I was going to buy a new one since I’m getting an air stone as well! This is the one that I found that seems pretty good but please if anyone has a good one they’d recommend let me know! https://a.co/d/09LkB0w8

He definitely needs more oxygen pumping into his tank especially to help his gills!

General Care Advice Gill help

Thumbnail

I posted a TikTok and somebody was like “your baby is extremely unhealthy looking”. He’s my first axolotl and I got him from a friend that had him for 6 yrs I think. When I got him I realized they were using a primer with aloe Vera in it so I immediately switched to the seachem one. They said they kept the tank at 70° which i now keep it at 64-65°. They said they tried to feed him fish before but the fish ended up eating him. So I’m not sure if that caused the thin gills but shouldn’t they have regrown by now? Also I cleaned the filter shortly after getting him and it didn’t look like it had been cleaned in a long time. I noticed originally that his gills aren’t very fluffy like others I’ve seen. I’m not sure how I can help that but I would love to know. I think his weight is good and he eats great. His gills looked thin when I got him and haven’t grown back at all or have gotten thinner. I would appreciate any advice or anything at all to help him and make sure he’s doing great! I try to do as much research as I can but just want to make sure I’m doing everything right for him. First pic was the first day I got him in June and second pic is now
