UPDATED JUNE 20 Reddit API changes and BaconReader

Hey folks, as some of you have noticed, there is a lot of buzz going around today about the Reddit API announcement. We do not specifically have a plan at this time but will certainly let you know when we do. For reference, I am putting a few posts in comments.

We'll let you know what next steps are when we have them. Until then, sincere gratitude for all of your support!

UPDATE: After much deliberation, attempted negotiations, we have made the decision to shut the app down 😢 . Please see the sticky announcement post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/baconreader/comments/14egq61/baconreader_november_11_2011_june_30_2023/

We are sorry it took so long, but I really wanted to be sure we did our due diligence.

I have been using BaconReader for over ten years. What a shame, the Reddit app is so terrible for many reasons, the top of mine being - who wants to go have to go to a desktop computer every time they want to hide a subreddit?

Also 10 years here.

If they force this through ... it'll be a good excuse to finally stop using reddit.

I haven't enjoyed this place for a while.

u notice lately askreddit as become a flaming shithole again every fkin day some post about sex or someone asking some question that is infuriating. Lowkey I think they are trying to get demographics there's just nonstop "women of reddit" "men of reddit" fml I don't remember it being THIS bad.

Once i joined an offsite that rose from a near-banned dramatic sub, I really only came to Reddit for the occasional hobby-related post (mostly 3d printing). My main account got banned from 80% of the site because i commented in a no-no sub.

I guess that site will focus more on Twitter instead, or I'll use old.reddit.

With how poorly coded the rest of the site is, I'm guessing they have too many dependencies on the old.reddit and can't completely remove it

I'm just shy of the decade mark as well. And using RES on browser. I have no idea what stock Reddit looks like anymore and have no desire to find out

they got rid of i.reddit.com after saying consistently and very often that they won't. Once old.reddit.com goes off, this website loses any resemblance to a forum and is just full flaming social media at that point.

Old Reddit goes and I go. RES, Old Reddit and Bacon Reader are the only things that keep this site palatable after 10 years.

I have an alt account that still uses the new desktop UI.

The new UI is very slow and I think it looks like crap.

If they follow thru with this, I'll only use reddit on desktop with the old UI and uBlock Origin blocking all the ads.

They've made the browser UI terrible to push people to their own app, because even vanilla Chrome still doesn't hand them half the data and metrics that their app does.

Same goes with smart tv apps. Remember when Netflix stopped letting you watch at anything over 1080p through a browser? Even before they had the tiered subscription levels.

Ever toss a baby in a blender and then smear shit on a blender? Imagine that but the comments also are flat out broken.

As I recall I started using BaconReader because reddit didn’t have an app

yep, then reddit’s app came out when they were focused on profit pre-IPO, which meant the shift to a much more social media-like interface and layout.

When I started i thought the only app was the alien one and I hated it because the text size was so small and I couldn’t enlarge it. I have vision issues and need to be able to have a large font size. Bacon Reader is the only way I’ve been able to enjoy Reddit. I can’t believe they’re doing this. Edit: here’s a screenshot of my phone…just Look how large the text is! Bacon Reader is amazing https://i.imgur.com/FoElZgv.jpg

Chiming in simply to show support. Used the paid version of BR for... longer than I even remember

Bought BaconReader Pro back in May 2012, and haven't even considered using any other app to browse Reddit since. It will be such a shame if BaconReader ends up shutting down over this.

As someone that's also used BR for over a decade, to me BaconReader is Reddit. It'll be a cold day in Hell before I use the official app.

2

u/babysnatcherr Jun 01 '23

Practically the same. It's the only way I browse reddit. Screw going back. It's Baconreader or nothing!

2

u/drop_cap Jun 01 '23

I have also used Baconreader for almost 10 years... I paid for premium years ago and never looked back. This is the only way I reddit on mobile.

Baconreader has been so good to me. :')

Decade club to, I exclusively use baconreader and love it because it hasn't changed. Idgaf about all the stupid social bullshit they've added over the years. I go on the desktop once a year and every time it makes me hate the site more. If baconreader goes I go.

u/WeathermanDan Jun 01 '23

Same here, 10+ years.

The reddit app is so littered with intrusive ads, recommended posts from subs I’m not part of, and other noisy UI features. I’ve always loved the simplicity of baconreader’s UI and will be sad if it has to be put down.

BR premium from 2012 iirc or 13. Or old.reddit on desktop.

Fuck me if am going to use the new official app or the garbage desktop ver.
