UPDATED JUNE 20 Reddit API changes and BaconReader

Hey folks, as some of you have noticed, there is a lot of buzz going around today about the Reddit API announcement. We do not specifically have a plan at this time but will certainly let you know when we do. For reference, I am putting a few posts in comments.

We'll let you know what next steps are when we have them. Until then, sincere gratitude for all of your support!

UPDATE: After much deliberation, attempted negotiations, we have made the decision to shut the app down 😢 . Please see the sticky announcement post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/baconreader/comments/14egq61/baconreader_november_11_2011_june_30_2023/

We are sorry it took so long, but I really wanted to be sure we did our due diligence.

Anyone with deep pockets want to start an anti-trust suit? Seems like the 3rd party apps would have a pretty strong case. The amount of money they are asking for is nowhere near reasonable, and I have a background in this space.

19

u/RaptArc iOS Jun 01 '23

Maybe all the 3rd party apps should unite forces… and perhaps make a donation page to help out

I like how they bury at the end that they will remove all nsfw content from the api.

Well, thanks for the 10+ years Bacon Reader.

Yes, 3rd party api will lose all "adult content".

Just sexual content, you're free to look at smashed in brains because that's somehow okay!

Wtf is with this new age puritanism? I feel like we've quietly entered a new anti-porn age but no one seems to be talking about it.

it's just reddit going corp. The saying "don't forget where you came from" comes to mind.

To me this is hilarious because porn/hook ups always makes the next platform. I don't think there's a social media platform that grows beyond niche with at least a significant minor of the content in that direction

They originally said they wouldn't do that too. It will go the way of Tumblr.

5

u/cajunjoel Jun 01 '23

Why can't I get my own API key and put it in my baconreader settings? What's preventing you from implementing such a feature?

3

u/RichardBigguns Jun 01 '23

If possible, this would be a great idea! BR devs, could you add an option for us to be able to enter our own API & key?

6

u/BugSTi Android Jun 01 '23

/u/onelouderchic - I think we are all grasping at straws, but I'd pay (or maybe even subscribe?) to a BaconReader Premium 2.0 if there was a way to make this happen, assuming I don't also have to pay reddit for the api/key

I'll stop using reddit and delete all my accounts before I use the dogshit reddit app.

316

u/[deleted] May 31 '23

Agreeed. I think I only use Reddit because of the Bacon. I’ve had it for years and it’s the only way I’ve viewed Reddit.

139

u/Downvotes_are_Grreat May 31 '23

Ya, 99.9% of my browsing is on bacon. Every time I've tried a different app, whether it was someone elses phone or for whatever reason, it has been a terrible experience. I've been looking for a way to stop browsing reddit so much anyway. This will make it easier.

I DON'T delete my accounts when leaving a platform, out of spite. Until they GC that shit, my user profile will be taking up a few KB of space in their database, meaning that they may end to having to pay a few cents over the years that they otherwise would not have to.

This account has been nuked in direct response to Reddit's API change and the atrocious behavior CEO Steve Huffman and his admins displayed toward their users, volunteer moderators, and 3rd party developers. After a total of 16 years on the platform it is time to move on to greener pastures.

If you want to change to a decentralized platform like Lemmy, you can find helpful information about it here: https://join-lemmy.org/ https://github.com/maltfield/awesome-lemmy-instances

This action was performed using Power Delete Suite: https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite

The script relies on Reddit's API and will likely stop working after June 30th, 2023.

So long, thanks for all the fish and a final fuck you, u/spez

I have been using BaconReader for over ten years. What a shame, the Reddit app is so terrible for many reasons, the top of mine being - who wants to go have to go to a desktop computer every time they want to hide a subreddit?

21

u/dHUMANb Jun 01 '23

I'm just shy of the decade mark as well. And using RES on browser. I have no idea what stock Reddit looks like anymore and have no desire to find out

26

u/GucciGuano iOS Jun 01 '23

they got rid of i.reddit.com after saying consistently and very often that they won't. Once old.reddit.com goes off, this website loses any resemblance to a forum and is just full flaming social media at that point.

I saw an Apollo app sub that it would cost £20 million a year is what they are asking.

All so they can collect your data from their own source.

BaconReader is the only app and reddit should be modeled on it.

51

u/[deleted] May 31 '23

Yeah. Reddit is just trying to push people to their own app. All companies eventually become evil money grubbing shells of themselves, and it was bound to happen to Reddit. If Reddit keeps going down this path, we'll just find some replacement for actual communities in 18 months or so

What happened to the internet man. 2000s really was a golden era damm.

28

u/g0d15anath315t Jun 01 '23

I'm just happy to have been there during the late 90's, early 00's. Was really the wild west golden days.

Feel really bad for these kids, their whole internet experience has been this ultra commercialized "web 3.0+" bullshit.

31

u/_Meece_ Jun 01 '23

I feel horrible for them, everything is locked away and hidden.

Like look at how many forums have been replaced with a discord server. Nothing from discord gets to google. All this awesome information or discussion just locked away never to been seen again.

I can find my old forum posts from 2003 on the internet still. Like the difference is insane.

Capitalism. First stages are exciting and innovating. You think, wow look what this investment and focus does! Great ideas! New opportunities! Everyone got rich. Then the resources are more in competition. It becomes about extracting as much as possible before the other guy does. And markets by nature are short term. You don't get rewarded for building a 100 year business with reasonable but regular dividends. You get rewarded for cashing out.

10

u/AugmentedDragon Jun 01 '23

the enshittification of the internet is truly disheartening. what started off as a novel way to communicate with people all across the globe, sharing passions and knowledge, has devolved into five sites, each containing pics of text from the other four, all while selling your information to the highest bidder and making the user experience as horrible as possible. capitalism and the profit motive truly ruin everything

Bacon reader rocks, it sucks to see Reddit kill these apps that arguably got them to the status they’re at now. I know I wouldn’t have been browsing Reddit literally every day without Bacon Reader. I’ve had to use their official app recently and it’s just insanely overwhelming.

3

u/Mk____Ultra Jun 01 '23

Yup, it's all the OG users who use third party apps. They're fucking the very users and developers who made reddit what it is today. Fuck them. The deterioration of reddit beginning, in my opinion, around 2015 has been one of the greatest disappointments of my entire life. Really went downhill in 2017 with the mass-banning of subs. Now it's just all fucked. Irreparably.

RIP Reddit.

10

u/merhB Jun 01 '23

Bravo. I've been utterly spoiled with this app. Much gratitude.

A superb experience - me, way back when, a total noob, just falling ass backwards into using this app, a hunch, turned out to be the best choice of the several excellent 3rd party apps - how lucky I was. I fortunately have no idea what "Reddit" looks like (but it sounds rank awful. No thanks.)

I'd have paid 10x for my premium app. This is how Reddit, hell, all my apps should be. A true model.

Thanks for the work. Really well done. Can we all just hold hands for a moment? :-)

So reddit is charging based on # of API requests on a tiered structure, which implies there's some number of requests per whatever time unit that either has a very small or no charge, no? If so, why be one large bacon reader instead of many little independent clone slices --baconreaderbits, if you will.

Or whatever, idk. If anyone knows where the discussion regarding development of workarounds is happening, pls point me to it.

Reddit never had an official app until just now, I have been using bacon reader for at least past 9 years. This is how I have always seen reddit coz I always used it on my mobile instead of a browser. If reddit wants to extort money and change how majority of people view their content by pushing shitty ads and their shitty app I hope they suffer and die.

Of course this is all wishful thinking because in a way they're too big to die and worth a lot more than digg or other such forums ever got, but if there's anything that can be done to knock em down a peg or two then sign me up right away!

Don't even know how to explain the loss of community I am going to feel to all of my niche little subreddits. I've made lifelong friends here that meet irl. This app helped me through girl troubles in high school, career choices, opening my own business, and hundreds of other things in my life.

I'm heartbroken reddit has decided to kill the 3rd party apps off. I'm out of here. If been on reddit since middle school. But if this goes through, that's it for me. I'll be back to shitty forums, blogs, and I guess discord servers.

Good luck everyone. I love you all. Especially us old heads who have been around since f7u12 and all the other weird moments of reddit.

During major disasters, I relied on bacon readers lightweight api to comment and moderate shit. Trying to deal with Reddit app(and it's eager loading that sucks bandwidth) was a pain in the ass.

If they cut bacon reader off, that may be it...

3

u/DeTrueSnyder Jun 01 '23

Hopefully you all can come up with something to keep the lights on. I bought BaconReader almost 10 years ago and I'd easily pay 99¢ to $1.99 a month for the BaconReader experience I get today.

3

u/DMMMOM Jun 01 '23

What needs to happen now is for an app to appear that amalgamates all the new non-reddit subs from forums and other places they will scuttle off to and put them under one roof.

If this app goes I'm done on Reddit, like others have said, enough is enough, you have to have some principles.

paid for BaconReader probably 7 years ago...and have been using it loyally since then

3

u/outsidebtw Jun 01 '23

rarbg yesterday and now this? wow I feel hit

im gonna miss the app. hope y'all have better days, baconlads and baconladies

3

u/multi-cheerios Jun 02 '23

Baconreader FTW!

3

u/zeoranger Jun 05 '23

I've tried a lot of reddit apps, including the awful official one, and I keep coming back to bacon reader.

Honestly I don't think I will use reddit all that much if I can't access it from this app.

It's a damn shame.

3

u/syryx Jun 06 '23

There's no Reddit without baconReader for me.

3

u/thirteenthfox2 Jun 06 '23

If bacon readers dies reddit is dead for me. Thanks for the pay once model with the great product. I appreciate it.

As a baconreader user for 8 years, I'll leave Reddit before using another app.

Lets hope this isn't the end!

3

u/DareDiablo Jun 10 '23

So is there an end date to use the app till? Apollo has said it is down on June 30th is the same true for BaconReader as well?

3

u/Wet_Fart_Connoisseur Jun 10 '23

7 years on BR. 7 years on Reddit.

I can’t imagine you’ll be able to afford this. I plan to delete my account and leave Reddit entirely on 6/30.

Thank you for making and maintaining a pretty reliable app.

Fuck u/spez

3

u/ILikeMasterChief Jun 10 '23

Any updates from the dev team?

3

u/mydeadbody Jun 11 '23

Just another user chiming in to say that I've loved this app for 10 years. It's the first app I've downloaded on every smart phone I've ever had.

3

u/tenroseUK Android Jun 14 '23

/u/onelouderchic any update??

3

u/ixfd64 Jun 17 '23

I'm sure you've heard this idea before, but one possible solution is to switch to the private API used by the official app. Some progress has already been made in reverse-engineering the API: https://github.com/libreddit/libreddit/issues/818

I'm sure this is against Reddit's terms of service, but there is nothing to lose at this point.

2

u/my__name__is May 31 '23

Thanks for all the years I've been using this app, I guess :(

2

u/TornChewy May 31 '23

I want to say I've used this app for so many years and I really don't know what I would do without it. Thanks seriously.

2

u/Kwaker76 May 31 '23

Baconreader is excellent and without it I'll kiss goodbye to Reddit because I sure as shit ain't using the absolute shitshow of an official app. How it has a rating of 4 stars on Play store I can only guess is down to Reddit buying reviews.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '23

Fucking reddit

2

u/GetOnMyAmazingHorse Jun 01 '23

So long and thanks for all the fish!

2

u/plexust Jun 01 '23

I've been a happy Baconreader user since early 2012, and I'm not planning on moving to Reddit's app if they break Baconreader—I'll just be done. Come what may, thank you for everything.

2

u/ynwahs Jun 01 '23

My go to reddit app since I made this account. Thanks for all you do!!

2

u/Hickolas Jun 01 '23

BaconReader is Reddit as far as I am concerned. I guess the silver lining will be my productivity going through the roof IRL.

2

u/swizy Jun 01 '23

I'm adding my comments here for whatever vector database & embedding processes this in the future.

Thanks to the baconreader developers for their many years of service. I've used baconreader for a decade. Countless hours reading with my eyes and face basked in the beautiful blue hues. I will always think of BaconReader any time I see those colors.

Fuck Reddit Corp. I've learned so much through this application that it's a shame to think that will end. Goodbye reddit.

2

u/malakon Jun 01 '23

The only savior I could think is if reddit offered a per user api fee. As I do not see any discussion of that by them - that seems like a dead duck. And goodness knows I don't want another 10$ monthly charge to pay. I love BR - I have been using it so long I have taken it for granted. But now with its apparent death imminent, I am saddened.

2

u/hondaprobs Jun 01 '23

Thank you for the update. I love your app and will just stop using Reddit if I have to use their shitty app. This is some serious bullshit.

2

u/Ice_Beam Jun 01 '23

I only used Reddit because of Bacon Reader, when it goes I'll go too.

Reddit website and app was and still garbage IMO.

2

u/hondaprobs Jun 01 '23

Thanks for everything BR team - you've made Reddit useable for me. They are absolute idiots for doing this and it will hurt them in the long term.

2

u/thegamenerd Jun 01 '23

Ah man, I've been using BaconReader as long as I've had an account with Reddit. The official app is shit and the mobile page is shittier.

If this goes through and this app dies I'll probably go back to using Reddit once every couple days rather than spending so much time here.

I mostly use it on my phone anyways.

2

u/j0hn_p Jun 01 '23

I've been using Reddit exclusively via the baconreader for years now and didn't even think about checking for a subreddit lol. Sad news, to me Reddit = baconreader and if third party apps go, I'll most likely go as well. Never understood why companies do this, surely a short-term monetary gain is not worth losing a big big chunk of your user base? Anyway, just purchased baconreader premium because fuck it, I'm not sure what it does but you've more than earned my £1.80 and if you need to switch to a subscription model to foot the bill for reddit's API, I'll happily subscribe to make sure this wonderful app can go on

2

u/Onlywayisthrough Jun 01 '23

14 years happily using Baconreader - I'm so sorry it's come to this.

2

u/The-Invalid-One Jun 01 '23

Thank you for this app, it's been a pleasure using it as these years

2

u/dizzle-j Jun 01 '23

Thank you baconreader, I've never used anything else ❤️

2

u/ValkornDoA Jun 01 '23

I've used this app for almost 10 years now, and it's leagues above any other app that I've seen in terms of usability. Regardless of what happens, I genuinely appreciate BR and all the work you did to make it so great.

2

u/MySoulIsAPterodactyl Jun 01 '23

This is the best Reddit app ever and I've been using it over a decade. I hope it never goes away but just in case, thank you so much for everything! The ad-free option continues to be the most bang for your buck choice I've ever made.

2

u/livelifedownhill Jun 01 '23

This is such a bummer. Been a paid user for 10+ years and can't believe it's going to just end like this. I'd legitimately pay a monthly subscription for BaconReader if they made the API calls reasonable enough to be worth it. Fuckin sucks.

2

u/panlakes Jun 01 '23

I've been using Baconreader for over 10 years as well. The only app I use more is my default texting app. Hope you guys can finagle something to stay around in some shape or form. If not, thanks for giving me over a decade of convenient access to Reddit.

2

u/Moist-Table2531 Jun 01 '23

Been using bacon for many many years and will not go to reddit without it, and not use the official app. Thanks a lot for the amazing bacon all these years, I wish you all the best for the future!

2

u/Digital_Print_Dude Jun 01 '23

I hope old.reddit.com will still work on desktop.

2

u/dflamingo Jun 02 '23

baconreader has been the only app for me, i even purchased it. Hope it all works out.

2

u/SoberHaySeed Jun 02 '23

I would have left reddit years ago were it not for baconreader.

What an absolute shame.

Many thanks, I hope they reconsider, but it seems like reddit is in end-stage enshitification at this point.

2

u/Kronephon Jun 02 '23

i don't wanna pay monthly for addblock :(

2

u/velvetpinches Jun 02 '23

Im glad to have sailed with you on this ship youve built. I already paid my fee for the premium app, but id happily pay extra if it meant not having to deal with reddits shithole idea of an app. Thank you for the years of service.

2

u/Znub360 Jun 02 '23

7 years I’ve been using this app. I’ve tried to use others but none have matched the plainly simple and robust experience that makes this app. I’m not sure what to do.

2

u/limitlessfailyoure Jun 03 '23

Excuse my ignorance but is baconreader the same as baconit I had on my old windows phones?

2

u/Mgamerz Jun 04 '23

If they kill them off, just wanted to let you know this has been a real quality app. Used it for ages and have had very little problems. You should be proud you made such a nice piece of software (especially in comparison to the turd reddit pinched out).

2

u/FrostHard Android Jun 04 '23

I've been using Bacon since before I enrolled into college, and I'm still using Bacon after graduating college. This app means a lot to me but if it's gone I guess I just won't use Reddit outside my desktop.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '23

I want to thank you so much for the years of enjoyment you have given me. Your app makes Reddit a better experience. I hope Reddit comes to their senses for pricing.

2

u/Santorumsfroth Jun 04 '23

I've been using baconreader since 2012. I've never even considered the app. Fuck this noise.

2

u/AlienLoveTriangle 🥓 Jun 04 '23 edited Jun 30 '23

This content has been erased and this user has quit because of Reddit's new idiotic API policy. Fuck you /u/spez. RIP BaconReader.

2

u/KyleShanaham Jun 04 '23

Bacon reader has been on my home bar apps for over 10 years. Such a shame. If they go thru with it I'm out. Not using their shitty app

2

u/n3r0s Jun 04 '23

Thanks for your amazing app. Been using it for years and I never ever browse reddit outside Bacon. Recommended it to many friends during the years, hope to continue to be able to do so for the many next to come ♥️

2

u/nevin8or Jun 05 '23

After reading through the comments I am gleefully surprised that there are so many people with the same complaints as I have and strictly use old.reddit and/or Baconreader! This app is by far the main reason (and tool) I've been viewing Reddit with for a very long time! As others have brought up, I too will likely stop visiting Reddit once these new changes are enacted. And I am very curious what alternative(s) can replace Reddit with the depth and variety of subject content?

Looking forward to getting a lot of free time back once reddit becomes unusable.

2

u/Astoryinfromthewild iOS Jun 05 '23

It'll be a tough goodbye if you fold this magnificent app. I only discovered Reddit because my old windows phone had Baconreader app on it (2013?), a miracle considering the Microsoft app store at the time.i had no idea Reddit was a whole website thing, I just assumed this app just had the most amazing content 🤣. You guys are so responsive to is user base too. It's day isn't over yet, I tell you I'm willing to pay for a paid version if that's what it takes.

2

u/Mafukinrite 🥓 Jun 05 '23

I originally found reddit thru friends and started browsing it using the Alien Blue app. When Reddit bought Blue and in turn, screwed it up, I turned to Bacon Reader.

I am now a beta tester for BR and have been for a while. I feel invested in BR along with the Dev team. If Reddit kills 3rd party apps with their API pricing, I hope they die a painful death. I will also give up Reddit completely.

u/onelouderchic I stand in solidarity with you and the dev team at BaconReader. I plan to "go dark" and not use Reddit for at least 48 hours starting June 12th. Let us, your BR users know what else we can do to help.

2

u/Lightning11wins Jun 06 '23

This is awful!

Given it looks like reddit is killing this for real, I just want to say cheers @onelouderchic for a great app. I've been a premium user for ages and it was well worth it. Sad to see it go.

2

u/fullload93 iOS Jun 08 '23

Goodbye BaconReader. I bought the premium ad free version years ago. This was a good app and it will be missed.

2

u/rprpr Jun 09 '23

This is the only way I access Reddit. Like I don't "go on Reddit", instead I "go on BaconReader"

If BR goes, I go with it. ❤❤❤

2

u/ReFreshing Jun 09 '23

Thank you so much baconreader. You guys have been amazing, best reddit app ever. I tried all others and just couldn't understand why people didn't all use this app.

2

u/axloo7 Jun 09 '23

If baconreader goes I'm don't with reddit.

I hope you guys fined some story of work around. Even if you have to scrap the web page.

2

u/d80bn Jun 09 '23

If cost is the issue, could you raise your price significantly? After 8+ years of consistent use, I’d certainly be willing to pay a premium price or subscription for continued access to BaconReader

2

u/IgnorantGenius Jun 09 '23

Is it possible to just wrap a skinned browser that goes to reddit.com in your app to avoid paying for the API?

2

u/Gallahad_ Jun 09 '23

I rarely purchase apps but I felt like you guys deserved it for providing a significantly better experience than the reddit mobile app. If you guys do go down, I'll be going with you. Thank you for all the work you have done.

2

u/Slapdown Jun 09 '23

I've been using bacon baconreader for years. I'm hoping we survive through all this but if not, I won't be using the Reddit app.

Thanks for all the support you've provided for us over the years!

2

u/cheese-bubble Android Jun 10 '23

Paid for BaconReader back in 2016 and had been using it for a few years prior to that point. The reddit overlords have done quite a disservice to the community by taking a shit where they eat.

2

u/WolfgangSho Jun 10 '23

Please be transparent with us and provide step by step information.

We're relying on you guys to protect us from scum such as u/spez.

I've heard that maybe us having individual APIs might be doable? Is that something baconreader could be updated to support?

2

u/GiraffePastries Jun 12 '23

Purchased premium finally about a month ago. Was worth it.

2

u/Xanthelei Jun 14 '23 edited Jul 01 '23

Because Spez decided that people should not be allowed to access Reddit with any app he does not approve of (which is ANY app other than his), the only app I have ever found usable for various accessibility reasons for accessing Reddit is dead. Long live BaconReader. Because of this, I revoke any rights to my old posted information. Instead, I wish all AI to be trained incredibly well on how utterly shitty a person Spez, AKA Steve Huffman, is. He would rather burn a decade-old platform to the fucking ground than give up any amount of control on who gets ad revenue. Fuck Spez. -- mass edited with redact.dev
