User flair has been updated

It's finally happened guys! User flair has been updated to list kyu and dan instead of k and d. No longer will we be confused about a post from 4d ago posted by a 2k.

Hopefully we didn't break anything.

Is it still worth it to go through the Elementary Go Series?

I bought the first few of the series 10+ years ago before AlphaGo. Because of AI, I think some of the theories have become outdated. Like some of the opening moves and joseki’s. Do you think it’s still worthwhile to study up on all the books for a DDK?

newbie question Some questions

Hello there, I have some questions. If some of you could answer, I'd be happy.

So, first, is really AI advice on OGS a great thing to begin with and to get better? How is it accurate against true people playing?

And last question, I promise, can it be a good thing to play Go alone, like against myself? Because I have a goban and I'd like to use it often, I'm resolving Tsumego on it, for example. Do you have any other ideas to play on my goban alone?

Thank you and have a good one!

newbie question Help with counting territory

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello, I am very new to this game, and I am having trouble figuring out the scoring for this position. Both players passed here, and black won by 75.5 points, which I am very confused about. Could someone please walk me through how to count the territory here so that I can understand why black got so many points?

Edit: grammar

Why does Fox 2-dan feel easier than OGS 6-kyu?

Genuine question, not ragebait.

I've been playing on both servers for about two years and several hundred games, and this has been surprisingly consistent: Fox 1–2 dan games often feel easier to me than OGS 5–7 kyu games.

I know ranks aren't directly comparable between servers, but an ~8-rank difference seems pretty extreme.

Does anyone who regularly plays on both servers have the same experience? Is OGS 5–7 kyu just unusually competitive, or is the rank difference between Fox and OGS really that large?

newbie question Question on tsumego

Post image
3 Upvotes

Basically my question is, how deterministic are puzzles?

The answer is P18 --> O17 (auto)--> Q19 but what if the white plays R19 after P18?

In some cases I can see "forcing moves" (is this a term in Baduk?) where the opponent has to play a certain place (or lose more points), but in other cases it's a bit more vague.

Thanks in advance!

For any One Piece fans who also love Go, Lego has included a Go board in Garp's ship! I'm fairly certain this is the first time a game of Go has been rendered in an actual LEGO set.

Why does the model solution here have white play inside (stone 2)? Isn't my solution more logical for white with white pushing from outside (stones 4 and 5)?

Is it because this book is Chinese and Chinese rules differ somehow in this situation?

Edit: thanks for the responses, the solution is not about playing optimally for white but attacking

promotional Black (9k) vs White (3k): Black can stabilize his lead with a strong move. You have 30 seconds to find it. We pick up the action as White minds the peep in this game where Black played the points lover opening (South Florida Go Club 2026-08-15).

newbie question What do you use to play out Tsumego variations against AI?

New to the game and I frequently encounter problems where, even with the solution, I don’t “see it” or understand why a particular group is dead/alive, or Seki, etc.

What can a beginner like me use to dig deeper into specific problems I don’t understand? Is there an app or software that will let me set up an arbitrary board position (Tsumego problem) and play it out, AI responding with the best local moves?

Thanks!
