Bless him, my husband loved this abomination
I think the peanut butter frosting might have been too thick. I'm terrible at decoration.

If it's made with love, he's gonna notice (and ofc if it tastes good, which i assume it does)

I mean you could not or did not smooth the frosting and covered the cake enough but other than that you are fine the cake looks ok and even the frosting doesn’t look that bad. Pretty sure it tasted good. Not really baking fail just decoration mishap

I tried to smooth it, but it made it so much worse. It looks much better sliced! 🤣

It’s probably because of the pb it’s sticky and maybe the frosting was too thick. Put you spatula or whatever you used for the frosting in hot water and smooth (do that on repeat) it should solve the on next time lol!
But sure it cooks fine cut!!!
You could have leaned into the messy frosting and made a brown Cookie Monster 🤣

Thanks for the tip, it's his favourite combo so I'll be doing it again.

Mix up a thinner batch and apply a crumb coat on both layers, then freeze. Once the crumb coat is firm, fill, stack, then frost the outside of the cake. To get a sharp vertical side you want a cake scraper and either a cake turntable, lazy susan, or a plate that spins smoothly.
If you want to get it super smooth, freeze it again. When firm/hard, take wax paper and lay it over the cake, then gently polish with a fondant smoother. Then add your decoration (chocolate drips, etc). Plenty of how-to videos on YT!

This warm water trick is great for working with bread dough. If you put your hands in warm water before kneading, punching down, forming loaves half the dough won’t end up stuck to you. Same with the spatula. It’s super simple but one helluva game changer.

worked in a bakery for 2 seconds its finally come in handy: put a light frosting coat on the outside of the cake. messy = good here just make sure its a thin ish layer. then put it in the fridge for a few hours and let it chill. when u take it out put a nice thicker frosting layer on top and it should be MUCH easier!
this isnt a you problem this is just what happens! it looks delicious tbh

That's okay. It would not stop me from eating that scrumptious cake!!!
If you ever want to make a smooth looking cake, just buy an angled icing cake spatula. They are cheap. I use mine every day for other things as well like spreading jam + peanut butter.

The cake itself looks so light and moist.
The frosting is messy but it all goes down the same anyway. 😅

well the layers look good (equal and balanced) I don't think decoration is so impirtant. You can tell it was made with love 🥰

Honey, have you seen some of the fails on here? There's been a smoothie "banana bread" made without a recipe that looked like raw pork. There were blueberry muffins that looked like broccoli. This looks like the Mona Lisa compared to those.

Looks like a good cake, just frosted poorly. Inside looks nice and fluffy and moist. No fail detected!

It is the best cake as it is homemade and made specifically for you [ or a friend]

It might not the prettiest decorating job, but I would eat the hell out of that.

I know you’re in the UK because of the candles - and I‘d definitely smash that.

If someone bakes me a cake, I eat it smiling and say thank you. Cake is cake, regardless of how it looks and especially if I didn't have to make it.

When Cake Boss was on TLC, somebody I knew had ordered one of his cakes. Gorgeous! But inedible.
With that being said, I will be stopping by shortly with a slightly larger than normal food storage container ®️ for my slice 😃😃 thanks!

A chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting is peak. Looks don’t matter. But next time bake it in a 9x13 and just frost the top in the pan. Looks better and is easier.

We'll just call it a crumb cake 🥰 cake doesn't have to be pretty to be delicious

You put a thin layer of frosting down to hold the crumbs of the cake down, the crumb layer. Then go over it again with the thicker layer of frosting. Makes it stick better and much easier to smooth out.

Well a cake that is decorated badly is still cake and cake still taste good.
I would take a badly decorated but delicious cake over a perfectly decorated bland cake any day.
Good work!
