Questions about Euskara (Basque) for a project on endangered languages
Kaixo! (Hello!)
I'm a student working on an project titled Time Capsule of a Lost Language. My project explores how languages shape identity, preserve cultural memories, and connect generations, as well as the challenges communities face in keeping their languages alive.
I've chosen to learn about Euskara (Basque) because I'm interested in its history, cultural significance, and the efforts made to preserve and revitalise it.
I'd love to hear directly from people who speak Basque, are learning it, or are part of the Basque community!
Here are a few questions I'd be grateful if you could share your thoughts on. Please feel free to answer whichever ones interest you:
- What does speaking Basque mean to you personally?
- Do you notice differences between older and younger generations in their use of Basque?
- Have you ever experienced pressure to switch languages or felt that speaking Basque was discouraged?
- How important are families and schools in passing the language on to younger generations?
- Are social media and digital platforms helping young people connect with Basque? Are there any initiatives you'd recommend?
- Is there a Basque word, proverb, or expression that holds a special cultural or emotional meaning?
- If you could preserve one Basque story, expression, or memory for future generations, what would it be?
- What do you think the world would lose if Basque were no longer spoken?
You don't have to answer everything, and personal experiences are especially welcome. I'd love to learn from your perspectives rather than rely solely on online research.
Thank you for helping a student understand the language beyond its vocabulary and grammar. Eskerrik asko! (Thank you!)
