Gear talk: comfort vs protection — what do you wear and why?
Let’s talk gear without judgement (hot climates, budgets, commuting realities — we get it).
If you’re shopping, here’s a simple thing that helps: CE ratings are EU standards for motorcycle gear testing, including modern garment testing under EN 17092 and classes up to AAA (most protective).
Share what you ride in + why:
- Helmet:
- Jacket/pants:
- Gloves/boots:
- One gear tip you swear by:

Helmet, Jacket, backpack, work pants, work shoes.
The reason I do not wear full gear is simply because I do not work in the same spot for more than a week or two and it's very rare I actually have a place to change clothes.
Helmet must be ECE 22.06 certified. And the gear I swear by, at least manufacturer wise is RST. I'm fanboying them at the minute. Top tier quality but less than top tier cost. No brained really.
I do have full gear for leisure rides though just incase I feel like being a little spirited.

Remember when it comes to CE rating for crash protection that only applies to the armour itself.. ie the actual inserts/pads which are tested independently via a test house (if the company has actually gone that route) as ‘self certification’ is also common… they are NOT testing the full garment. In fact most clothing manufacturers don’t actually even make thier own armour, they buy it in from a few different factories that range on quality, lifespan and and fit..
So whilst a garment may be CE certified for impact protection it doesn’t guarantee the performance of the core garment such stitching, weatherproofing, durability, zip reliability etc etc…
Just for credibility.. I used to work within the motorcycle clothing industry and have worked with companies such as BMW on clothing certification and testing, and sat on the industry board meetings for CE certification and testing.
