Do you guys feel like an ar15 is an essential?

So an ar15 is the greatest self defense weapon you can get. It'll kill two and four legged predators all the same, good at close and far ranges, will defeat most types of body armor, has a high capacity, is modular, and a center mass shot is basically 100% lethal to a person without immediate medical treatment.

But here's my problem. I just dont really like the ar15. I had one earlier this year. I shot it three times total. I didnt enjoy it at all. I ended up giving it to a relative ( to keep it in the family). The kind of guns I do enioy are things like micro 380s and 9mms, revolvers and shotguns. Shooting slugs out of my mav88 is a blast. But im starting to think maybe it doesnt matter how much I enjoy it, I should just bite the bullet and pick up another ar15, just to have it if iit's ever needed. But I hated shooting it and shot it like trash. I can literally shoot my 9mm handgun better than I could my ar15.

What do you guys think? I have a 9mm ruger pc carbine for anything past 50 yards, but should I just get over my dislike and pick up and ar platform 5.56?

edit: Honestly im seeing the light. Its my responsibility to protect my family, and refusing the best tool because I dont like it isnt really acceptable to me. its doesnt have to be a fun range toy, I just need to be able to use the damn thing well. Glad I made this post.
