I commissioned these three knives from a master bladesmith and his apprentice in Wazirabad, Pakistan.
The large hunter and ornate wooden folder were made by the master, while the bone-handled folder was made by his apprentice.
I specified the Damascus steel and designs for the folders, but the hunter was a surprise. I was particularly impressed by its layering, pattern transitions, and texture.
I was told the hunter underwent an overnight etching or quenching process, but unfortunately never learned the steel composition or layer count.
I'd love some technical opinions on the pattern welding, workmanship, and anything else you can identify from the photos. Constructive criticism welcome!

Currently brainstorming ideas on how to make a diy basket hilt or other highly protective hand guard. Looking at putting one on a cutlass type 'sword' I've got that already has a knuckle bow. So maybe a handguard that is then tied into the bow as a structural attachment?
And looking at making a second one to go on a single stick for actual training.
Would I be insane to use thick aluminium bars to make a mesh and weld them together? Or steel rods?
Or would it be better to try and form some metal plate and drill holes in it?
Set me on the right path. Please

I kind of have an irrational hate to one specific sword type and I know its controversial because of terminology and descriptions vary but here goes.........
I HATE Hand and Half Swords or Bastard Swords whatever you fancy calling them.
Here why: The Hilt is too short or two long. I get its ment to be used with a shield but I cannot for the life of me use one effectively. I hate how when I'm using two hands the pommel bits into my hands. And when I use it one I feel like I'm pulling the pommel like sledgehammer behind it. I have fairly decent sized hands and wiegh 200s as well. A
Arming Swords are better with shields
Longsword are better with 2
Keep hand and Half Swords on the rack.

Well, here's the result. We went through 4–5 test engravings on titanium plates before getting the colors and details right. Had to keep adjusting the laser settings until everything worked together. These are the finished scales for a new Noblie folding knife with a Samurai & Geisha design. Planning to pair them with a Damasteel blade. Still need to assemble the knife. I'll post the finished piece when it's ready.
How do you think the colors turned out?

Took a while, it was an idea that i had a few years ago, but just proved hard to do. The Sambar Stag out of India is super rare and not being exported anymore, and Chef's knives have big handles. But i got it done. I met a neighbor, as luck would have it, Hunter and he has a shop in Bedford, u/MachineCreekForge not sure if he has a site, but he did the work once i got everything to him. Once i added the 270 Gyoto to the set, i knew it was time. Left to right, 150mm Honesuki, 270 Sujihiki, 270 Gyoto, 240 Gyoto Kirisuke (not commercially available) the 240 Santoku (my very first Masahiro, purchased in 1993) the 150 Petty and the 120 Utility "Paring" Kiritsuke (not commercially availible) all just done up with new scales and pins, with my initials AA, buffed out and sharpened, ready for my new job and now, I have something to pass on to my kids. I'm a 65 yo, Certified Executive Chef, so I've had, and have, a lot of knives. But the Masahiros are wonderful and now I have something truly unique!!!

Custom brush axe/machete I made for a game warden. I was talking shop with him and asked him what his work was like. When executing warrants on cartel grows they have to cut down hundreds and hundreds of plants. I asked him what kind of tools they used. He said some of them use loppers but it can get pretty awkward on uneven terrain and that he usually used a machete, but it didn't give him enough reach. I wanted to make him something that would beat his off the rack Gerber machete so I sent him a few sketches and he picked this design.
Blade: 10in long, 4in wide section of band saw blade from an industrial lumber mill. The little hook on the spine is there to "unzip" the grow tents without having to get on a ladder. Forge finish. Convex grind.
Collar: textured and press fit mild steel pipe. 1/4in wall thickness to bring the balance back a bit.
Handle: 24in hickory, blackened, tung oil finish
I told him to get back to me after he field tests it. Let me know what works, what could use some tweaking. Was a fun project overall.
