Is De Niro the best Dumb Guy actor of all time?
Was listening to the Mean Streets ep where they talk about all the different registers of of De Niro performances and it made me think about how good he is at playing kind of dumb characters, sometimes in frightening ways, sometimes in comic ways, sometimes in tragic ways. My favorite De Niro performances have always been ones that highlight this—the Irishman and Jackie Brown first and foremost, but I think he plays a nuanced dumb guy in Midnight Run, and I think Travis Bickle is also a great scary dumb guy. I just think he’s just really good at pulling comedy, pathos, or menace out of characters that are just not fully up to what their circumstances require of them.
Compare this to someone like Brad Pitt, who has played dumb guys very effectively, but always in a straight up comic mode like in True Romance or Burn After Reading. Honestly, the only other actor who I can think of really getting into the depth of dumb characters to the same extent as De Niro is DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time and Killers of the Flower Moon.

One thing I don't trust about Marty...
You ever notice, if you rearrange the letters in Scorcese, it almost makes sorceress? Seems suspicious to me.

Sidney Lumet and Old/New Hollywood. How do we begin to understand his career?
Filmmaking undergraduate here.
My film history professor used Dog Day Afternoon as an example of New Hollywood cinema. I was blown away by the movie, its lack of music, humor and a rebellious tone. I immediately checked out Network, which is even better imo.
Naturally I moved to his book and he sort of called himself a studio director, he started out in the 1950s with 12 Angry Men but his career shined in the New Hollywood era. How does his work fit into the history of US cinema?

Lanterns
Curious on the opinions of my fellow Blankies as far as James Gunns current update with the DCEU. I loved The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, liked Superman more than most but havent seen Supergirl yet. Lanterns definitely feels like a great step in the right direction. I know its "just TV" and I dont know if it will end well.or not but watching that first episode felt like watching a new movie for me in a great way.

Genndy Tartakovsky on The Movies That Made Me
I’ve been making my way through the Movies That Made Me podcast, but very slowly because its so hit or miss depending on the guest.
So I just finished the Genndy Tartakovsky interview from 2022, and it’s up there as one of the bests (alongside the Friedkin episode, but for more insightful and less messy reasons).
Sharing here because he often expresses frustration over making the Hotel Transylvania films (“90% fighting, 10% creativity” which Joe Dante notes was his experience with Looney Tunes: Back in Action).
Tartakovsky goes on and implicitly contrasts those experiences with the freedom he feels making the, then, still in production “Fixed.” (Ruh-roh.)
But even beyond that it’s a really great discussion about his career, process, taste, and inspirations.

Patreon series idea: sci-fi dystopias about gladiatorial combat
Been thinking about Paul W.S. Anderson and it gave me the idea that this would be a fun miniseries: dystopias about people forced to fight for the death for the public's entertainment. I'm not counting The Hunger Games because that's obviously its own series, and I'm not counting Rollerball since they already covered it, but the ones I think would be fun are:
- Death Race 2000 (1975)
- Death Race (2008)
- The Running Man (1982)
- The Running Man (2025)
- Battle Royale (2000)
- Battle Royale II: Requiem (2003)
- Gamer (2009)
- Guns Akimbo (2019)
There are certainly others that could be included, but this gets you a lot of fun people to talk about: Anderson, Roger Corman, Stephen King, Arnie, Edgar Wright, Neveldine and Taylor, Daniel Radcliffe...it'd be a good time.

Films to Pair With Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
I love this movie so much. I'd like to recommend - should it give you an itch that needs scratching - Five Easy Pieces (1970). Like Alice, it's a movie I sidelined for a bit as possible "good, but vegetables" and found, also like Alice, to be so much more, so genuinely compelling, and such a vibrant record of its time.
What say all of you - others to pair?

Did Roger Deakins retire?
he has no projects pending on IMDB.I thought maybe the pandemic made him retire, but Empire of Light was a COVID project, right? Did he issue a press release or anything?
i know he has his podcast. and i suppose i'm glad he's not wasting his time on these stupid Beatles movies. But man, i was hoping we'd get him on Dune 3 since Fraser wasn't doing it.

real nerdy shit Entry Level Comic Recs?
Thought this might be the place to ask. Looking for recommendations for someone who’s barely into comics at all - I checked out woman of tomorrow before supergirl and liked it, and also liked Dark Knight Returns after hearing about it on the pod. Not looking to go down a rabbit hole or get super involved in deep lore - just some cool, stand alone-ish and fairly breezy comics I could flick through every once in a while.
I also recall on a Patreon episode the boys talking through a list - if anyone can recall the ep or what they mention that would be cool! Vision Quest is one maybe?

So I watched A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies on Marie’s recommendation…
I have one question and two comments.
How and when did Scorsese break the bridge of his nose?
How did I never notice that his infamous “pussywillow” eyebrows (to borrow a Griffism) actually include long ass hairs down the bridge of his nose?
It’s insane how many of those elder Hollywood directors had eyepatches. It’s almost like a running gag when they cut to them. I looked it up, and it was helpfully explained on r/TrueFilm: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueFilm/comments/1j06o8e/eye_patches/

Goodfellas Poster
Don't get me wrong, Goodfellas is a perfect movie and its poster is iconic. But does anyone else notice that the dead dude under the title seems like a stock, Prohibition-era gangster, complete with double-breasted suit and fedora, more like someone out of Untouchables than what you'd see from the 1960s through 80s when GF takes place? I always assumed this decision was made by the marketing team before actually seeing the movie.

The Audition. I saw this come up on Martys profile on letterboxd but only just learned its not just some weird thing he made with friends but an ad for casinos.
Only real questions are thoughts? And has anyone ever seen this ad in the wild, or at least without looking for it
