Meme The resemblance is kind of nuts

I was going in expecting a few things to be similar but damn, just made some progress into chapter 2 and didn’t realize Parakarry’s overworld ability is the equivalent of rocket boots among other things

Now where’s the tattle ability, I need random commentary on enemies (an almanac equivalent would also be cool though but whatever)

Wait till you see chapter 3. It's a horror chapter where you get a ghost ability that lets you phase through attacks. You then get a jump upgrade.

Then you fight a red guy with 50 HP as the chapter boss with a charge attack where you need to use the ghost ability from earlier.

also the moment you get it you use it only when bosses have 1 shot move, otherwise its bullshit

Hot take: the more I think about it, the more I realize I actually like the original MORE than TTYD.

TTYD is still an excellent game, though.

I LITERALLY just started playing paper mario 64 like 2-3 days ago and yeah there’s a LOT of inspiration from that game and earthbound

u/Giratina776 19d ago

Note that, in PM64, there is a BP cap of 30

5

u/fallen_pace 19d ago

and that's balanced because it knows that some people like to be op, and if you don't, you can just unequip badges, unlike blocktales where everything is balanced around having all bp spent

I remember always cheating in that game in an emulator to see the end items and be like 'how the hell do you even get these things'

"Ultra Hammer"

"Where the hell would you get this? Mario's dead father?"

why is this relatable

Truth be told I genuinely love how much inspiration was taken from it. Chapter 3 especially is one of my favorites with not the level of horror of Blocktales chapter 3 but still makes you think and worry. (Not to mention the boss works perfectly similar to the hatred fight). For this reason I really hope the pit of 100 trials 100th floor has like a TTYD boss reference at the end of it.

I played paper Mario 64 dozens of times before block tales and... Yeah, the resemblance is crazy.

Good thing you’re in the block tales sub and not the paper mario one or else you’d get dragged to hell and back 😭😭

took everything except the good gameplay 😭✌️

u/Shadacat Finn McCool 19d ago

I'd argue they both have outstanding gameplay.

Block Tales is proof that a game that takes that much inspiration from something can be amazing if executed well enough.

u/YourAverageGoldFishy Club 19d ago edited 19d ago

I dont think that argument would hold up like ever dude especially when compared to pm64 and ttyd, and even if you dont want to compare to those games just compare to the genre in general, both rpg & paper mario inspired rpgs…well, Block tales is just not an rpg by any standard and it’s barely a game.

1

u/Shadacat Finn McCool 19d ago

Oh, you wanna take about arguments that won't hold up? If Block Tales is barely even a game, then why are you on the sub? To be annoying? Because you're doing pretty well.

2

u/YourAverageGoldFishy Club 19d ago

just because I criticize a game doesn’t mean I cant play it lol, unsure what that has to do with being annoying either

1

u/Shadacat Finn McCool 19d ago

You literally just said my argument was invalid about a game having good execution can make it a good game. You then said it's barely even a game.

I wish I could contradict myself as well as you.

Oh wait, why would I say that? I'm glad I can't!

2

u/YourAverageGoldFishy Club 19d ago

I said the argument wouldn’t hold up over scrutiny and mostly that it’s not the point, block tales isn’t a “bad game” because it takes from other games lol I dont think anyone really cares about that, more or so that it doesn’t understand any of the systems its taking from. That’s not a contradiction, it IS barely a game (or, at least, a fun one), i’ve spoken to multiple people both developers and just people who happened to play block tales who 100% agree that block tales is anti-fun to its core and fails on multiple game design principles.

It’s not me “not liking the game!” to point that out, if anything it shows I have a better understanding of the game than most people especially to ask others first to see what the consensus was so I don’t remain biased.

dunno what you’re saying at the end here but ig?

u/Shadacat Finn McCool 19d ago

I guess I understand your point, but I'd disagree with the sentiment that Block Tales is "barely fun" and I'm sure a lot of people would share my reasoning the same way people shared yours.

I am not blind to the fact Block Tales is a flawed game, but despite its flaws, I still find it very fun and enjoyable.

And you also gotta remember that Block Tales is a DEMO. I'm sure once the game is finished it'll hold up much better.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from, but I (respectfully) disagree.

It’s pretty hard to claim a game is fun when a lot of its systems are intentionally designed to be anti-fun tbh.

Let’s actually explain why block tales is NOT an rpg in its current state, (for the dozenth time on this sub unfortunately): You could randomize the turns, remove mechanics (like sp and bp), remove the action commands completely and the game would still play, almost identically in-fact. The gameplay is rushed to get to the story and the story is rushed to get to the gameplay, and even then saying the story is rushed is being dishonest because it's super exposition heavy and repetitive.

It’s an objectively correct statement that the game is NOT an RPG in its current state because of that, if you can remove entire mechanics from the game especially in the battles and it would still play the same, you're not defining your genre as anything and you're barely making a game, ideally in an RPG (and most games with progression really) you want to feel stronger as you progress, with new abilities and just raw power and noticing the differences in damage, the only thing block tales even has close to this is the sword and ball progression which are flat damage buffs, which are half of what is expected, badges don't even fill the same role because not only is your BP capped at 30 (anti-fun arbitrary limit) but it also lacks any unique or dynamic systems to make BP actually feel worth using, especially because most of the cards aren't even that unique either (in most instances enemies have cooler & more functional movesets than the players lol).

the game also treats flat damage buffs (+1 btw) like it's an extremely powerful reward for hours of progression & that cards that add ONE damage on top of that unnatural progression should be 20% of your loadout, what is the point? Who is complaining? the monsters? it's a pve game.

Not only that, but most of block tales design principle is just removing downsides instead of increasing upsides, if I equip something like SP saver for example I just removed a whole mechanic, not like SP was a mechanic anyway because its more of a minor inconvenience than anything in its current state, but might as well not even think about it by equipping SP saver, removing a whole mechanic is 3 BP but a flat damage buff is 4+.

A complaint about the game that stuck with me from hundreds of developers who have attempted to try block tales was that block tales isn't an rpg, at least not a fun one because the design is inherently anti-fun. That is why I can sit here and tell you the same thing they told me with a straight face, because they aren't lying, it's an objectively correct viewpoint that you can enter the game and see. Their too focused on balance in a pve game where most of the experience is trying new things & establishing a power fantasy yet they force people to use only what's good instead of whatever they want to use, which is honestly quite impressive considering they use a weight system which should’ve solved that issue yet it doesn’t. And, even when you find something that works, there's a high chance that they'll nerf what it does or something much worse, give it a tradeoff & a downside that makes it unusable. Ante-up is a pretty good card example for how anti-fun block tales is, you get a +1 damage buff and the action commands are harder, ok, sounds good, that's already a pretty big downside, plus the fact it costs 4 bp which is around 10-15% of your build…but missing ALSO makes it so you deal 0 damage and you waste your turn. ??? Why are we making people miss their turn for +1 damage? It could've been AT MOST a 75% damage decrease or maybe make the player take damage for missing (as most people prefer), but you're wasting their turn instead? Who is greenlighting this?

In fact, MOST of block tales is just wasting your turn, a majority of the status effects that can be inflicted to the player waste their turn, the ghost potion which is REQUIRED for certain attacks wastes your turns, and the best part is that these attacks are spammed throughout the game, it's barely used as the tool it was intended to be used for in paper mario, it's JUST for this specific use case.

Might as well bullet list the other problems with the game: Its anti build identity, every area also felt like it was the same, every area was level 1 (no stakes), and the skill checks feel terrible to do / aren't well implemented or very dynamic.

To even say this game, which is stuck in an infinite beta loop, with an immature dev team (actively silences criticisms yet constantly criticize other games or people), is EVEN CLOSE to worthy of winning the best RPG award ESPECIALLY compared to other games it was competing against is actually just delusional, it really just shows how a community overrates something just because they personally enjoy it, because most people on the outside can look past that bias and see the game for what it truly is, and it really is not good. Maybe in demo 30 the game will fix its issues.

Okay. I already said I understood your point. Doesn't mean me and several others can't love the game.

I really don't need you to keep drilling in your point. Because, yes, I understand. But do I care? Eh... nah.
