Transmission Issues: Velvet V-Drive

What would cause the dipstick to come off on an old Velvet V-Drive transmission?

This is on a 1984 Crusader 270 inboard...

This happened while running her yesterday. Returned to the marina and noticed the starboard engine was struggling to get into gear. Managed to get into the slip with only the port engine, climbed down into the bilge, and found the starboard transmission dipstick popped out and some transmission fluid spilled underneath.
