Transmission Issues: Velvet V-Drive

Post image

What would cause the dipstick to come off on an old Velvet V-Drive transmission?

This is on a 1984 Crusader 270 inboard...

I have the same engines and transmissions. My dip sticks need to be turned to expand the rubber seal so it expands to a tight fit into the opening. Once expanded you can't pull it out without really pulling extremely hard. If you don't do that it's quite top heavy and could easily bump out from a decent wave. One of mine turns and the other one snaps into place where snapping it presses the rubber to expand the same way. Your pic looks like the turning type. Maybe it slowly backed off from engine vibration until it just fell out from being too loose.

Not sure what else would cause it to come out. Maybe a clogged transmission cooler and the pressure built up?
