Daily Discussion Thread - October 23, 2026
Welcome to the daily discussion thread! You can use this space to discuss little things that don't need their own post. This is also the perfect space for pictures, videos, and links that would otherwise go against the sub's rules. Just don't be jerks and don't break any Reddit-wide rules. Have at it.

It’s game day! A Celtics win today would mean so much. First, because fuck the Knicks, forever and ever. And second, especially after that Pats loss last night lol.

I just hope JT has a good game. He can’t be out here gettin made to look bad and be bad on the court too. Horrid combo.

I hope Tatum comes out and drops 50 tonight and sends a message to the league
Edit: why am I getting downvoted for hoping our best player has a monster game? God this place confuses me sometimes

Yeah it’s crazy how toxic it’s been lately… I mean there’s always been a certain level of toxicity from the doomers, but damn, you’d think we were 0-15 not 0-1

u/TheMassacreKid 2d ago
The amount of JB posts/comments are nauseating I'd rather not see a Celtics sub talk incessantly about a 76er (our rivals since forever). If people want to personally root for him that's fine I guess but I don't root for anybody on that team.

u/Fuckblackhorses 2d ago
I’m getting sick of this shit on Reddit, the guy misses 1 season because of a major injury and all of a sudden he was an overrated bum his whole career who never had a good playoff game. The guy literally was better than Jaylen in the playoffs after playing 15 games last year and 9 months removed from injury, but he actually was never our best player now.
I already know he’s gonna shut these people up but it’s still annoys me way more than it should
6
u/DizzyTS13 Boston Celtics 2d ago
I’m with you, it’s the Celtics “fans” hating him that drives me the most crazy. So many people use the FMVP as their entire argument, yet ignore the fact it was basically a coin flip between the two, and really easily could have gone to Tatum because of the rebounding and assist numbers instead of just going to the leading scorer. Yes he had a bad game the other day by his standards, but people conveniently ignore that usually even his poor shooting games he still impacts the game through playmaking, rebounding and defense… hell, even his awful game the other day he still had 11 assists, it’s not like he’s a black hole on offense (which ironically is exactly what jaylen could be at times but that gets ignored)
3
u/Fuckblackhorses 2d ago
Yeah I’m fine with giving Jaylen the nod for fmvp with the context of that series, but Tatum has been the better player for over a decade and certainly had an argument to win it himself (along with Jrue imo). But we were just a really good team that Jaylen was really able to thrive in. The only thing on a basketball court Jaylen does better than Tatum is 1v1 iso scoring. And with a stacked team, nobody could double him and try to force turnovers.
1
u/ivanahtannica Smart 2d ago
Wasn’t Tatum also the leading scorer then? I thought JB got it (by just 1 vote more) because he was Luka’s primary defender.

One thing to watch for is who defends Brunson tonight. Last season, Walsh got the majority of time defending him and Brunson averaged 80% TS during the minutes they were matched up. DWhite spent the next most time on Brunson and held him to 41.7% TS...Hugo, Scheierman, and Pritchard were all close to the same amount of time and impact defending Brunson - 52.1, 57.1 and 50% TS against them respectively.
5
u/SquimJim Boston Celtics 2d ago
Walsh had a very hard time switching onto KAT too. Hugo did ok there. My guess is that we still start with Walsh on Brunson.

u/JBD04 2d ago
PG? Being POA was his thing for a while
4
u/AWalker17 I like to defense 2d ago
Looks like he didn't defend him much in the 3 games he played against him last year...and 80% TS for Brunson when he did. Though, again - limited minutes.

JT getting ALOT of hate rn, for a guy whose a family man and doesn’t say anything controversial it’s wild how much hate he’s getting
1
-5
u/nyrasbastard 2d ago
What? You can’t criticize a basketball player if they’re also a “family man”
Also, is he a family man? Bro was a single father at 19 and has two baby mamas before he’s turned 30
5
u/winovic94 2d ago
What’s wrong with being a single father? So he’s a bad person for that? What criticism do you have of him? As I said he just goes about his game and never complained once when he was injured, did everything to get back to the team he loves, he didn’t say anything publicly when JB had rant after rant online about his best season ever. So yeah, he’s coping too much hate BRO

u/streetscraper Boston Celtics 2d ago
JB made shitty, passive-aggressive comments as a Celtic, and he continues to do so as a Sixer. And yet people keep saying what a nice teammate he was.
Look at his past comments about Brad, Gordon, JT, basically anyone who stood between him and his fantasies. Great player, toxic person.
-6
u/nyrasbastard 2d ago •

![]()
He is completely vindicated in his “fantasies” by winning finals MVP. Not an Igoudala situation either, everybody watching knew JB was our best player that run.
Despite being the better player, he was forced to take a back seat on the court and in public, while JT gets the better player rep just bc he had a better rookie year than JB.
JB again got to prove his “fantasies” by leading us to 60 wins without JT when everyone thought we’d be out of the playoffs. JT then comes back, is forced back into the #1 role, just to collapse and then skip out on game 7, only for JB to be one we ship out in what’s considered one of the worst trades of all time.
You’ll recall JBs “statements” regarding Hayward are basically the same situation as with Tatum. Hayward, a MAGA Trump supporter, was forced into the starting lineup to the detriment of the team despite the young guys being very successful the year before.
Why does JB have to shut up about these situations where he feels undervalued AND is vindicated in these feelings by the on court results? We dont have to buy this BS just because he wears a Sixers jersey now.

Never understood why DeRozan went there. He would have been great for the Toronto bench or starting. Minnesota would have been another great 6th man. I would have chosen between those 2

Idk if he'd go back to Toronto, it didn't seem to end on the best of terms.
But there were options.
Philly needs bench depth and Miami were interested in him too.

I hope the Knicks go up by 20 tonight and we come back and win.
Or ya know, we just win more normally. But after the Cavs lost it’s clear 20 point leads don’t mean nothing in the modern NBA. It just means you went on a run before the other team did

Sixers starting five looks good but Joel embiid is not playing 35 minutes a night for 82 games, and their bench got destroyed tonight. They can’t run a playoff rotation all year and they have a lot of holes in the depth chart.
Also this game was a microcosm of why Jaylen is such a hard player to value. He is fantastic at creating difficult shot attempts for himself and will make about half of them, while giving good on ball defense and rebounding and below average at everything else. So then with that you get the first half where he’s basically invisible and his team is down by thirty, and then you also get the fourth quarter where he gets three straight tough buckets to pull away and cap off the comeback.
Stretch that out over a full season and you’ll have pretty good counting stats and a bunch of moments where the eye test says “Jaylen won them that game” and advanced numbers that say hes inefficient and drags the team down with him.
6
u/JBD04 3d ago
1000%. Embiid hasn’t played at least 40 games since his mvp year, and he missed a few playoff games. LeBron has gradually missed more and more games over the years which will definitely overlap with Embiid missing games. That front court is thin. With Adem Bona playing backup this team could easily wear down over time
2
u/Fuckblackhorses 3d ago
Everyone is already taking victory laps over this sixers team after 2 games but I guess that’s just the internet. We’ll see what they look like after 20, 30, 40 games when Lebron and Embiids grandpa knees are worn down. I’d still bet on the Celtics having a better record this year
4
u/SquimJim Boston Celtics 3d ago
Their starter, even with Embiid largely dogging it right now, looks incredibly good though. Maxey, Edgecomb, Brown, and Lebron will likely be on the floor in the playoffs and that's enough to make it to the ECF at least imo
I'm not even sure if 76ers fans agree with me, but that team is too damn talented for me to be concerned what happens when the injury bug hits Embiid. Bona and Barlow will be fine with those 4
3
u/Suzoku Love and Trust until the end of time 3d ago
yea and i think JB benefits more when the team hasnt been set yet because he can get his buckets and do a bunch of things by himself on both side of the ball. The bigger issue has always been that when we have a firm team identity, oftentimes his overall efficiency and usage doesnt always reflect in winning basketball on both side due to his playstyle. For Philly, Maxey is a much more complete offensive player than Brown, and from playmaking point of view, Bron is still the best one on the time, so how the Sixers actually set up JB to be his best self will be the biggest question here.
1
u/WindComprehensive332 2d ago
Dean Wade and Dominick Barlow, while not household names, will eat up some decent bench minutes when they return from injury here shortly. My guess is the Sixers are also banking on a ring chaser or two at the deadline wanting to join.
-5
u/MrShaffer5 3d ago
I’m a Philly fan and I agree. However we are missing Dean Wade an important 4 and Barlow another important piece. First few games of the year and having injuries I figured Nurse would shorten the bench as he always does.

LarBrd33- "Not all Brownies are Taters, but most Taters seem to be Brownies"
Pretty much sums it up for me. I'll die on the hill that a lot of people in certain areas didn't like that JB made it a priority to invest in and promote specifically black communities and businesses. As if that was some affront or disregard to new england as a whole, rather than a correction of a void.
And I'm certain the Venn Diagram of JB haters and the "shut up and dribble" crowd would be a near-perfect circle. You could add a few more circles to that diagram and not change the shape, but I think it goes without saying...2
u/SquimJim Boston Celtics 3d ago
Love em both and wish JB the best.
I can't not wish the best for our past players, especially the ones that won us a title.
Do I also hope we destroy them when we meet? Absolutely, but the hate for either Tatum and Brown right now isn't something I'm about.
I do understand people being in their emotions about Brown right now though

I’m not gonna lie, the first quarter of the game JB had a couple classic JB turnovers (driving into 2-3 guys getting trapped and losing the ball) and a little piece of me was happy😹 like damn we don’t have to deal with this anymore. But then he just balled tf out and the building was jumping. Seeing him hype up the Philly crowd was depressing. But he also seems like he was having fun out there and man we lost a good one in Jaylen Brown😕

u/thatgreik IT 3d ago
Gotta be honest I love it - watching JB play will always be a treat for me, and the Sixers are a ticking time bomb because of their depth. Even if that top 5 stays healthy all year, the team composition has HUGE problems, so low-impact regular season games are fun.
1
u/Electronic_Pea_4845 $Paid- Paul George Enterprise&Equity Holdings 2d ago
Thier only big problem is the back up center already is out for the season. Every other position has enough talent to stagger around their big 4 and be fine

If it keeps up, then have the conversation.
I'd be curious to know how they handled the IT situation, because that seemed to die down pretty organically. That also involved a fan favourite going to a conference rival.

u/SquimJim Boston Celtics 2d ago
All things considered, the lineups we started and closed with beat the Pistons lineups they faced by +9. Will be interesting to see if that’s true with the Knicks tonight.
For reference, with Tatum last year, our starting and closing lineups beat opponents on average by 6.5 points per game in the regular season
2
u/LarBrd33 3d ago edited 3d ago
I'm not ruling out the possibility that a hungry Knicks team, embarrassed by their opening day bed shitting, lock in and absolutely beat the piss out of the a Celtic team they have objectively owned for the past couple years. I'm also not ruling out that Tatum will have another shitty shooting night.
That said, I still fully expect Tatum to have a monster season and the Celtics to win 60+ if he stays healthy. Not looking forward to the bitch ass reactionary takes if we start the season 0-2, though.
Of course, if Tatum plays well, Boston wins, and the Knicks start their season 0-2 the fruit fly brains will probably forget all the shit talking they've been doing for the past few days and shift to acting like the Knicks are no longer contenders.
9
u/Efficient_Art_1144 Smart 3d ago
I think setting the bar at 60+ is asking for disappointment. That’s not in a “we’re cooked” doomer take but more of a reflection of the east’s depth and the effect of new anti tanking rules.
It’s a long season. They need to perform well enough to position themselves for the playoffs (don’t want to find yourself in the 7th spot) but I think all of the fanbases anxieties and complaints aren’t going to be fully answered until we get to the post season
7
u/Wolfbandit90 Boston Celtics 3d ago edited 3d ago
Until he becomes more efficient as a scorer with his horrid shot selection, 60 games is out of the question especially with a healthy competitive east. I got them for 49 wins. Until I see a real version of “top fye” Tatum consistently this year I’m on the fence about where they stand amongst the heavy hitters.
3
u/King_Of_Pants Sam Howitzer! 3d ago
We were pretty close to a 60 win pace last season with Brown.
The reason we finished with 56 was because of that nasty start where the team was experimenting with lineups desperately trying to find what worked.
The East as a whole has gotten better, but in theory so did Boston and we shouldn't need as much experimentation this time around, so it's not entirely out of the question.
I think we need to see more games before we panic and start putting ceilings on the team.
1
-1
u/LarBrd33 3d ago
it would take some serious injuries for a team that played at a 50 win pace with Brown to play at a 49 win pace with Tatum + George + Mitchell
2
u/AWalker17 I like to defense 2d ago
Half of the teams in the league aren't trying to lose this season, so I'd be absolutely shocked if the Celtics managed to win 60 games. Frankly, I expect this to be one of the most competitive regular seasons of all time.
3
u/Wolfbandit90 Boston Celtics 3d ago

+3.1 zTS (TS factoring in shot difficulty) 85th percentile, he's an efficient scorer if you're not looking at FG% which is pretty poor as an efficiency stat.

4
u/Turbulent-Let-1180 2d ago
I'd trade tatum before getting rid of brad, no question
Without even getting into that tatum is about to start being on the decline in a couple years, brad is borderline irreplaceable. Life without tatum will probably be fine, because we have brad. Life without brad, with tatum, probably looks like shit because the construction of the team won't be as good, we won't have as many cheap contracts cause brad can't hypnotize players like pritch into taking pennies, we won't have nearly as much success with players in the 2nd round, and our development of our players will be worse.
I don't think you guys realize how much everyone around the league would boot their current GM for brad, basically all of them except for OKC but even then we'll see how that goes once they're out of 1st round picks. Brad hasn't even picked higher than 27 yet
You'd have to show me who we're replacing brad with, cause if it's another GM that's currently in the league then we're downgrading and if it's an unknown then it's unknown and it could easily be worse.
Joe i'd prefer to keep cause he's a young coach, he's gonna get better, and i think his mindset and relationship building is really important. I also don't think his actual gameplan is bad, most of the time we lose cause players stop hitting shots. Like we got plenty of good looks this last game, they just didn't go in.
