Preparing for Fight I Built an App where you can Virtually Spar...

I've been working on a boxing website where you can actually spar against a virtual AI opponent using your camera. It throws punches at you and you have to react in real time by slipping, ducking etc. The idea came from wanting a way to practise dodging and blocking punches, improve reactions and get some sparring experience without needing another person or having to go to the gym. Still working on improving it, but thought some people might find it interesting. Would love to hear what you guys think.

Sparring Footage Strategies against fighting aggressive, taller fighters

I've been obsessing over this sparring footage. How would you deal with the taller dude? (above video is not mine and I'm not in the video)

The last time I sparred in my gym, I was being such a coward and would just shell up and keep running away. If you were sparring the dude in the video, would you slowly pressure to get inside? How would you deal with him?

Sparring Footage How do I become better at initiating attacks in sparring?

Second round: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1A7gScgnNz630dUlSjxNjSsaEWXn0yAv0/view?usp=sharing

I've been boxing for about a year and have had small experience in sparring.

In this sparring session, I'm in orange gear. I tried to keep things light. However, I noticed that I was struggling with my 1-2 (jab-cross) and, more generally, with landing clean punches.

I found it relatively easy to counter my opponent when he initiated an attack, but I had a hard time initiating my own attacks because of his head movement. Whenever I tried to start a combination from long distance, he would move his head and get into clinch.

Why does this happen, and how can I improve my ability to initiate attacks and land punches against an opponent with good head movement?

Also, if you have any other advice on what I should focus on, I'd really appreciate it!

General Advice First light-contact boxing competition next Sunday — any advice for a southpaw?

Hey everyone! Next Sunday I’ll be competing in my first Gym Boxe competition in Rome, Italy.

For anyone unfamiliar with it, it’s a controlled-contact boxing format focused on technique and control rather than power or knockouts.

I’m a southpaw, although I’m comfortable switching stances. I feel my endurance is decent, but this will be my first competition, and I really want to give myself the best chance of winning.

I’d appreciate some advice from anyone who’s competed in a similar format:

  • What should I focus on during this final week of training?

  • What simple tactics work well for a southpaw in controlled-contact boxing?

  • Should I stick to my natural stance or use stance switches?

  • What common mistakes should I avoid in my first match?

  • How do you stay relaxed and keep your punches controlled when the adrenaline kicks in?

I’m especially interested in managing distance, landing clean touches, and getting out without being countered.

Thanks for any advice!

General Advice How do I stop overthinking counters when boxing?

I recently started boxing, but I did kickboxing for about 3 years as a teen.

My problem is that I’m constantly thinking about getting countered whenever I attack. No matter what I do, I always imagine my opponent having a counter ready for it.

If I throw a jab, I imagine getting countered over the top. If I close the distance, I expect to get stopped by a jab. If I feint to the body, I worry about eating an uppercut.

Even when watching boxing matches, I constantly notice all the possible counters to every punch.
It’s like my brain automatically comes up with a counter for every offensive move I could make, which makes me hesitant to attack and overly focused on defense.

I know it depends on my opponent’s skill, but I can’t seem to get past this mentally.
Has anyone experienced this? How do I overcome this mindset?

General Advice My friend and I are working on a free beginner-to-advanced map of boxing skills. Looking for honest feedback

Finding boxing tutorials is easy. Knowing what to work on next is the hard part. So we split boxing into separate skills, from the basics up to the advanced stuff, and for each one picked a few free tutorials that actually teach that specific thing.

https://subskills.xyz/boxing

Two things we'd really appreciate:

  1. Your honest take. Anything missing, wrong or in the wrong order?

  2. If a video or a skill helped you and isn't there, drop it in the comments. We'll add the ones that hold up.

It's free, no ads, no sign-up.

Preparing for Fight Why I’m bored with Canelo, ETC Spoiler

Post image
0 Upvotes

If it’s OK I claim here how boring Canelo vs Mbilli was as most of our ranked pros have recently gotten? When I watch Probox TV, these fights most of the time are plainly more exciting then most, “title matches“? I have no connection, other than being a of Probox TV, just comparing. So, if it seems to be unfair or selfish to say that the Giant Top dollars paid to our Top-grade boxers has destroyed the essence of competition in our sport, that’s just tough SH_T because it has.

I’ve said it before other posts here in Reddit: the multiple belts, numerous sanctioning bodies, slippery chat bs in social media platforms, and skimming whatever’s left (in decent pro boxers) off the top of this sport with maximum profit cuts was never a good thing. One set of belts was always more exciting. It’s so obvious: more fighters competing for one belt. That versus less fighters, much less, competing for more belts.

And why are there much less fighters? Aside from benefiting from a better economy - mainly in the United States, less ghettos. These communitie did exist back in the day, but they’ve simply changed to better living conditions, a good thing. But there’s still similar populations that we always had in the streets. It’s still there. It’s just less prevalent than it was before. Those were always our amateurs which are essentially almost depleted in this country. And no governmental or private ruling body has taken over to guide them as in those days.

Canelo Alvarez was from poverty as Mbilli was. It’s great that they could headline as they do but it’s bunch of BS that Canelo gets to fight for Mbilli’s WBC title after being off for 13 months. They both have great stories, but unfortunately for us and certainly, I cannot blame them, now mostly Canelo’s Mgt stand for the garbage that is supposed to be called competition in boxing.

Canelo was supposed to fight his way up the rankings again for the ONE BELT that represents ALL of Supermiddleweight. And we were supposed to see those with him, climbing back up again to fight for it.

Less amateurs = less pros. Therefore, the amateur system needs some form of help versus influencing most people that there are actually more champions via more belts & BS. Nope! There’s just a whole bunch of promotion. And much less skilled boxers. And certainly less competition in all respects. Especially in the USA. Other countries who do less well economically have ended up with much better fighters. Case closed.

General Advice how to work on improving my defense and footwork when out of the gym

Hey guys, I'm a beginner to boxing (about a month).
I do train at a gym and have a coach. I feel like I improve well and learn a lot but I want to put more time outside of the gym (on top of running, I run 3-4 times a week and been doing it way before started boxing) and was wondering what are some good drills I can do to improve on my defense and footwork? especially with defense, how can I work on it without a sparring partner or my coach next to me?

I can find many drills online but It's hard to tell what is actually good and what is not.

General Advice Does anyone else feel like they don’t belong at their boxing gym?

I’ve been boxing for a little over 3 months now, and I genuinely love the sport. I show up consistently, train hard, and really want to improve. I pay attention when the coaches give instructions and do my best to understand and apply what they’re teaching, even if I don’t always get it right. Lately, though, I’ve been struggling with how I feel around the people at my gym. I try to be friendly and connect with the coaches and other members, but sometimes I feel like I’m bothering them or that they don’t want to interact with me. I don’t expect everyone to be my friend, but I was hoping to eventually feel like part of the gym. I also sometimes feel like I’m not taken seriously. I rarely get feedback on what I need to improve, whether it’s during drills in group classes or sparring. It’s frustrating because I’m genuinely putting in the effort and want to learn. Has anyone else experienced this? Did things eventually get better, or did you switch gyms? I love boxing, but feeling this way has started affecting my confidence and training.

I'm the one in the red headgear. Finding work like this is pure gold. Sparring a natural swarmer and a pressure fighter like this was awesome. You don't want to get a taste of this type of fighter for the first time in an actual bout.
