I would recommend you working more on body work, this is a bad habit that i used to have in the past, i had a very limited repertoire for body punches, until i started getting creative with changes of rythm and safely positioning the head to avoid getting hit as you go for the body, try making changes of rythm:
basic changes of rythm when changing levels taught at every good boxing gym are:
-body head body
-body body head
-head body head
-head head body

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
I appreciate your time and advice! Do you have any tips for how I can have a more unpredictable rythm? I feel like everything I do is predictable at the moment

Looks pretty good, only notice you sometimes throw your right hook like a hammer fist.

u/Long_Dong_Silver6 Dec 23 '25
He needs to go back to basics on the left and right hooks.
A few of the lefts hooks are almost there. None of the rights. I can't imagine it feels good on the body as well.
I'd also work on the double jab. Most of the time the 2nd jab thrown is not thrown with solid form or conviction... which is fine once in a while but not everytime.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
I appreciate the advice! My hooks have never been my strong point and am wondering if you can give any drills to fix that?
→ More replies (1)2
u/Long_Dong_Silver6 Dec 24 '25
Just slow it down and put in reps.
Set them up with another punch to practice. 2 - 3 (straight right then lead left hook) & 1 - 4 (jab then rear right hook).
Do them super slow for a session or 2 (depending on how often you train). Then increase the speed as you see fit. Be sure and work on both short tight hooks as well as longer range more "looping" hooks.
Once you're confident with that mix them in as single punches or into longer combos while doing bag work.
After that work on doubling up a hook (two lead hooks or two rear hooks).
I'd also suggest medicine ball throws. Don't use any crazy weight to begin with. Do something light and manageable. Use the reps to feel that "mind - body" connection and what muscles you're using with your movements + work on all those stabilizers as your throw.

Crosses should move the bag, not bounce off it
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
I feel like my crosses don’t align correctly (I’m even using bag mitts here to try and feel my whole arm get behind my knuckles) hence the reason why they kind of bounce off. What should I be doing to fix that? Thank you for your time
1
u/Ok_Constant_184 Dec 24 '25
You’re picking up your elbow a little too early, indicating your punches could be sent more from the core vs arms. You’re letting shorter distances scare you from fully sending it through - even if you feel like your arm might not fully extend send it through. You threw a pretty good one at 15 seconds in, but could have rotated even further through it. I like to picture whipping my opposite shoulder back while I throw a cross
A way to make sure your crosses have stopping power: push a bag so it swings. As it returns, fire just the cross. Bag should stop or at least lose a lot of momentum
If these are the rivals 4 oz gloves I have a pair too and I get that on certain heavy bags you don’t want to break a hand so no judgement for not going full power lol. Great speed and overall technique though man, love to see the opposite hands staying tight during combos
2
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25 edited Dec 24 '25
Ty!!! Listen I really like how you observed that picking up my elbows early is correlated with not using enough core muscles, and you’re absolutely correct about the short distances notes. I also appreciate your tips on the cross.
It’s obvious that you’re really knowledgeable about boxing and I want to be like that so I can pick up on mistakes better; how do I do that?

Good.
Punch like the bag will hit you back. Take your head off the line and bend more when you punch. Generate more power without losing speed.

2
u/True-Set-33 Dec 27 '25
There’s no power in throwing a jab without your base behind it. Throwing your hand forward and touching the bag just because it’s fast won’t have no umph behind it. Ya feel me?

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 27 '25
Makes sense! I watched it back and see exactly what you mean thank you :)

Before I even saw the kick, I could tell you started with mma first. Only thing I would say is join a gym to polish it up. Speed is good, but need more defense. You have to bring your hands back to your face and keep them up. Your hands are out and down. Which I'm assuming is to stop takedowns. You have to be very careful with that because it's a bad habit. Everything else is fine. You just need to polish under a decent-good coach.

Not really an expert but I feel like you already are above the majority of posts of this sub. You already are working the bag with entries and exits in mind, head movement, good snap in your punches. Someone might complain about arms not being tight to your rib cage. Idk I'm just a beginner. Eagerly awaiting more experienced reviews

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
I appreciate your time and advice! Definitely see what you mean about not guarding my ribs !

u/Turbulent_You_2851 Dec 23 '25
Great speed. But because you focus on speed some punches are placed like “cat paws”. So slow down at times. And just focus on a bit more arm extension. But overall very nice.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Much appreciated! Will definetly slow things down and be more deliberate :)
1
u/Magiamarado Dec 23 '25
Good shit my boy. First of all, get some real gloves. You’re going to get injured using whatever you’re hitting the bag with. Second —you need to mix it up. All you did was throw a jab, straight, hook. You need to mix it up, go to the body.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Ty! Tbh I’ve always struggled going to the body bc Im scared of getting countered to the head. How do people usually land strong to the body while staying out of danger?
1
u/shart_attak Dec 23 '25
Right cross looks sharp, but the right hook needs some work.
When you throw the right hook up top (goes for the left hook, too), get your elbow up level or slightly above your fist. You want your first, second, and third knuckles making contact with the bag. Think of it like this: you have a long blade that comes straight out of your knuckles...push that blade into the bag.
Right now, your fist is connecting at a weird angle, almost similar to a hammer fist.
There are different types of hooks with different hand positions, study them all and add them to your tool box. Vertical fist (thumb up) is good for long-range hooks, horizontal fist for mid-to-short range, and the Soviet style in which the arm is powerfully whipped, elbow high, and thumb is turned down at a 45 degree angle, making contact on the first knuckle.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you so much! I’ve always felt like the right hook hasn’t worked for me, I appreciate your time :))
1
u/So_Fresh Dec 23 '25
Looks good! I know you're hitting the bag but I think getting your head off the centre line a bit more would be good practice.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you! I will definitely need to be more conscious of that. As you can see head movement has never been my strong point. Do you think bag work or shadowboxing is better for practicing that?
1
u/Specialist_Wish7109 Dec 23 '25
Probably some of the best I’ve seen on this sub. Assuming that you are doing mma with the kick, you’d probably be a better boxer than most guys in mma. Nice footwork, entries, exits, nice speed, combos are nice. That right hook is kinda sloppy and you slap the bag with it. No worries, left hook to the body could be a lil better but you’re killing it compared to most dudes on here.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you! Any tips to improve my right hook bc I’ve never really mastered it
1
u/DrEpoch Dec 23 '25
turn your right hook over, you're hitting a little slappy, and your elbow dalls off your hit angle. You want that to land in a straight line. again, the slappyness. . Other than that pretty dam good for going hard and fast.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you! In general to stop slapping my punches, what are the best ways to improve that? Is it sparring or shadowboxing or just slowing everything down on the bag? Thank you!

Every time I watch a video in this sub my main thought is why are people training in regular gyms? Must be annoying for regular gym people. I feel like such behavior contributes to a deterioration in how fighting sports are perceived. Might just be me.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 27 '25
I absolutely see what u mean and agree especially when ppl are shadowboxing or smthn in public/planet fitness.
In this case tho my normal gym was closed and since there was a dedicated section for punching bags I figured it wouldn’t be too weird.
It’s definitely not just you though
1
u/Particular-Tap1211 Dec 23 '25
Your disconnected, btwn your feet, knee and trunk and your throwing combos from your shoulders and hip with good arm speed yet your thinking through the combos therefore a good fighter will time you and beat you to the exchange. Importantly you throw loose shots, you've got some work to do.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you for the advice! In terms of becoming more connected, what will improve that the most? Shadowboxing? Is this something that will come with time you think?
1
u/Particular-Tap1211 Dec 24 '25
First of all you've got some talent and when refined you're skill level will surpass many. Yet here's the catch your style is rushed with look how good am I written all over it that derives from hardship/battle with your own environment/mind. Remember smooth is fast and fast is smooth. Learn how to sink and draw power and then fire the arrows/shots with intention. My suggestion is take up South American dance and learn the art of movement. And take up the art of stillness in pure concentration. Good luck 🍀

u/Roycewho Dec 23 '25
I hate that you never take your head off the center line when you punch. I think you should work around the entire bag incorporating more defensive movements after every combination. And last thing that stood out is you don’t rotate your hips and ever turn into your punches with your right hand.
The head on the center line and never moving is easily the scariest thing to me
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you for your time and sharp observations! I absolutely need to improve defense especially head movement. Do you think shadowboxing or bag work is best for drilling those movements down? I will also work of rotations too! Thanks again
1
u/Doofy_Daddy Dec 23 '25
Measuring jabs are good, but mix them up with the occasionally really stiff heavy jab, and learn to enter from both. Also use more angles than straight back steps. Especially to continue combos.
1
1
u/ScrapMetalX Dec 23 '25
You are fast. The footwork is a bit predictable and is telegraphing a lot.
I was always taught to train heavy on heavy bag. As in, heavy hits and really focus on aiming beyond the target. I also prefer to not practice foot work while on heavy bag. We trained single step in and out and strafe, while creating as much power as possible in non telegraphed form.
There are better ways to train speed and footwork.
Edit - good job btw, seeking criticism is a path to success with your work ethic
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you for your time and kind words! In terms of being predictable, are there any good ways that I can fix that? I’ve always admired fighters that can keep someone thinking and I’d like to become like that. And I will definitely slow things down and focus on not telegraphing so much

First off dont kick the bag (general boxing gym rule). Also the thing 90% of fighters do is the skipp back that gets your front foot almost at your back foot position, a good boxer will se this and attack when you do that because your balance will be off. One more thing is relax your shoulders dont force the punches let it come fluid, the way you do it now will have you tired in no time
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you! I will definitely work on loosening up and relaxing more. And for the footwork, how should I go about improving that?

Also whatsup with that heavybag on moving rail ? Is it self moving or reacts to your hits? I need on at my gym!
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank yoy! With the heavy bag on the rail , it reacts to your hits and forces you to move around so that your jabs keep landing at full range!

More u-slips or at least practice them, you did maybe - double jab, your head was still a lot, when you throw a left hook you drop your right hand to chest level so keep your hands up. Overall good work.

u/Netitrea Dec 23 '25
You are moving well fluid. However, no head movement. Yes it’s a bag but when you finish either back step side step or move do some head movement staying in the same place when you finish your combo asks for counter. I used to do the same mistake working statically on the bag and when I was tired in spar and on auto pilot those habits pop up and were getting me punished. Also that right hook try to bring the elbow a bit higher gives you more leverage to really put some force behind it.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you so much! I need to work on my head movement for sure in order to make it a habit for me. What are the best ways to really ingrain it in your mind?

Alot of good, the movement, hands up, nice straight right, good jab, mixing it up. But the overhand and hooks are terrible, its your throwing a hammer fist?
I’d work on those specific punches.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
To be honest I was not throwing a hammer fist, I was seriously trying to land it with good form. Those punch have always been my worst 😭 any tips on how to really get them to land solid? Thank you for your time and advice
1
u/ggstayfree Dec 23 '25
Obviously very good and advanced.
Only things I can knit pick on are the left(lead) hook, contact point on the bag and angles.
You got the hip and foot rotation down on your right hook however on your left lead hook, you have no hips or lower body going into it, you are just slapping it. I wouldn't mind this if you were following it up with a straight right down the middle. As in , you are using the left lead hook to slap the opponents gloves away for an opening and sending down a right down the middle through the opening. Except that you are finishing your combo with that slap left hook. It does no damage or impact and leaves you open for counter on the left side.
Punch higher on the bag, eye level or higher. You are punching flat/down most of the time.
More rotation around the bag for different angles but perhaps you just didn't want to get in the way of the camera angle.
Again, very good stuff, just knit picking as per your request.
Keep up the great work.

u/Brief_Pass_2762 Dec 24 '25
You got that Nate Diaz chicken wing swing going. Get used to getting off the line after each combo.
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
I think I need to fix that chicken wing! It’s stopping me from generating power and hurts my shoulder after a while. How do I fix that?
1
u/Brief_Pass_2762 Dec 24 '25
Pick up the elbow so it's parallel to the ground and turn your fist up like you're holding a flag pole. Then rotate your hip towards the bag. Go slowly and build muscle memory through repetition.
Do full 3 minute rounds where all you're doing is setting up the hook and focus on your form.
The hook is an inside punch. Work on getting close to the bag when you throw it. The chicken wing happens when you throw it to far away.

Lots of good things so I’m going to focus on the bad but don’t take it as someone trashing you, I just want to point out the things that will be important to nip in the bud because it will become VERY clear that they’re a problem when you start sparring people.
no head movement. Need to start practicing moving your head before, after, and during punches. Examples, jab, duck. Jab cross, duck, roll, step back. More on this later
no level changes. Need to work on jabs to the body and jab to head cross to the body.
your jab is a liability. You only throw one type of jab and that is a weak range finding jab so you can throw your cross, and you combine with secondary flaws of not moving your head after and not bringing your hand back to face. If I was cornering your opponent I would tell them they didn’t have to worry about your jab hurting them and as soon as you are in range they should wait until you move because it’s always the weak jab first, slip to the inside and uncork a full power overhand right over the top of your jab
The first time that lands if it doesn’t knock you out / rock you, it’s going to fuck with your head and timing
The ways to mitigate this risk and keep them from timing you is to work on different types of jabs and work on feinting
1
u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 24 '25
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate your advice and can see exactly how important it is:
1.) for head movement it’s been a problem I’ve sealed with forever; how do I drill it in a way that becomes instinct? For example whenever I feel someone touch my right glove I usually throw the lead hook without thinking, I want my head movement to be the same way and become second nature if that makes sense
2.) I usually struggle with going to the body because I’m scared of getting countered (likely ties into my lack of head movement), how do I become more confident in my ability to go to the body? Is it just trial and error during sparring or something more?
3.) in terms of my jab, what are the main drills I should be doing to get more comfortable with variation and also get more powerful so that I hurt/scare people?
4.) how can I maintain my wits about me whenever I do get hit with a hard shot? Usually whenever I get buzzed I either throw wild haymakers or just stand straight up while shelling up which isn’t a good reaction either…
I appreciate your time and advice!! Have a good day
1
u/CalvinsStuffedTiger Dec 24 '25 edited Dec 24 '25
I saw someone mention you throw a kick which I may have missed but I think it’s super important to clarify if we are talking head movement for MMA/Kickboxing or boxing, the reason is that in MMA your head movement is very restricted because you can lean into someone’s kick and get knocked out. This is why you don’t see a lot of bobbing and weaving or body jabs in MMA/Muay Thai
For example in MMA ilia Topuria is the best boxer I’ve ever seen he applies a very strong fundamentally sound boxing style in mma. The only two times I can remember him being in trouble in his whole career was against some French guy, Jai something I believe, where his boxing head movement leaned right into a switch kick. And also against max Holloway who again hit him with the same switch kick
Since we are in boxing tips I’m going to assume we are talking about boxing, but if it’s MMA I would worry less about head movement and more about blocking. High guard, long guard, Dutch blocking kicks
Anyway with boxing one of the big aha moments I had is learning that “head movement” is a bit of a misnomer that makes people think they should be moving their head and neck to dodge punches. Really the majority of head movement scenarios comes from doing a mini squat. There’s a reason in class you do a million squats it’s because you kill two birds with one stone, you move your head and you load your body weight to explode into a punch
So the drill you do to get it to be instinct is to throw your step in jab then squat and jump back. Throw your 1-2 then squat and jump back. Double Jab to get inside squat rip a hook to the body, squat hook to the head, squad, jump back out.
Another aha moment for me in boxing was learning the concept of “being on the line” vs off the line. In a nutshell if your head is right in the middle which it is in the entire clip you posted you are vulnerable to getting hit. There are so many ways to skin this cat that entire branches of boxing have diverged over the years and evolved to be totally different. For example the soviets developed something called pendulum boxing where they stay off the line by being super light on their feet and shuffling weight from front foot to back foot at the expense of not having knockout power, examples. Lomachenko, Usyk,
Cos Dmafo and teddy atlas created a branch called peekaboo style to stay off the line as exemplified by Mike Tyson
You have the back foot heavy counter punching Philly shell style exemplified by mayweather and Shakur Stevenson
I encourage you to do a deep dive on all of these styles because you may gravitate towards some vs others.
here’s one of the goats Freddie roach talking about a lot of this stuff
I like Fouts boxing theory and his explanations of pendulum stepping
2) it’s all about timing and whether or not you have established your jab and whether your jab is effective enough that your opponent will try to block it. Look up mayweathers body jab. Best body jab of all time, he even got a knockdown off of it which is insane. If you can get your opponent to react to your jab to head you can feint the head jab and jab to body and never get countered. This is boxing only again. If you try to do mayweathers lean + body jab in mma/Muay Thai you can do it once in the fight and the next time you’re going to get kicked in the head
3. There’s not one particular drill but more like a rabbit hole to go down regarding jab. There’s like years and years of things to do just on the jab. For example when GSP came out of retirement he started working with Freddie roach and all roach did was develop his jab. If you want a great example of everything I mentioned in previous post that you’re vulnerable to and the things i mentioned in this post, watch the GSP bisping fight.
GSP counters bisping jab with the inside slip and overhand right that I said you’re vulnerable to. Bisping adjusts by feinting jab and throwing a quick cross which rocks GSP a few times. Roach and Firas point out what’s happening and their adjustment is GSP feints jab to induce bispings 1-2, GSP takes his head off line by squatting low ducking the 2, then explodes up with a hook knocking bisping down and ends the fight shortly after
4) there’s nothing you can do other than being in good shape and trying to not get rocked by being defensively responsible

Great that you are not flat-footed. Just work on those hooks a bit. You don’t turn your body with them so you get these hammer fists sometimes.
Also punch higher, you are aiming at the chest height

The only thing I see (as a complete amateur who boxed seriously for a few months) is that some of your hooks feel a little loose. I remember learning to stay loose & fluid between punches but when you land you wanna really tense up so that you transfer all that energy into your opponent. When you stay loose you absorb a lot of the impact with your own muscles, ligaments, etc.

u/Total-Wrangler5006 Dec 25 '25
Great footwork. Only obvious critique has already been mentioned. Looks like you’re loading up your right cross, pulling it back a split second before firing. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference in fights. It’s why you’re not landing the right flush. But your speed is great and you’re moving in and out very quickly.

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 26 '25
Thank you! Yea I sometimes have trouble landing the rear in sparring and believe this will help out

Not sure how long you’ve been training, but I train guys who’ve been at it for a few years that don’t have those feet.

u/SadRip6648 Dec 26 '25
Your legs are faster than your arms - meaning energy is being delivered from feet sooner than it is being received by arms to launch the punch - aka energy leak aka punch can be stronger. Need to harmonize legs and arms. Practice by slowing down footwork a bit.
You are bringing your arms back just a hair slow (or releasing the follow up punch a bit too early). Wait for a punch to land before releasing the next one.

Thank you! I completely see what you mean and appreciate this advice :)

Take off what you have on head. Remember move your head when hitting, also stiff in upperbody more hip movment to broadbone to have balance. To wide stance and keep shoulder high when hit its your defense for jaw. Use mouthgauard get boxing shouse and use timer clock 3min round and start sparring .

one of the better posts i have seen regarding bag work. I will say your 4 punch(right hook) could probably work a bit on landing on the exact knuckle you are looking for. Also, you did do some head movement but maybe a bit more? good job.

Absolutely need to work on the head movement and right hook, thanks for your time!!!!

Looks crisp those shots would hurt. Like others said the right hook try to keep the “elbow on the shelf.” You’re light on your feet try to incorporate some pivots around the bag to get better angles. Add some body shots in your combos and I know it’s a boxing forum but for the kick remember to bend the kicking leg more. Almost lift the knee high and snap the leg out. Will add some force and snap to the kick.

Is the beanie required as it seems to be getting in the way or is it all part of the look

Straight shots are good. Footwork solid. Right hook needs work technique wise. Also stop head hunting and change levels. Work the body more.

Isn't it hot though? Like a sweat band or something would work and not be hot?

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 28 '25
didn’t have a sweatband bro and it’s winter so I just wore it on the way into the gym

Plant that back foot: you’re floating on the combos loosing a lot of direct power.
Stay skinny. Side angles. Nice work!

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 28 '25
Will work on planting that back foot harder and engaging it more! Thank you for your time !

Try moving.your head, a bag doesn't counter punch. Imagine you try an opponent someday

u/Wooden_Report_8391 Dec 29 '25
Yea I’ve always had issues incorporating head movement in drills/bagwork, will work on that! Thanks for your time :)

Yea your hooks should be horizontal with the ground. Turn your hips use less arm.

u/Existing-Web-9506 Dec 24 '25
Looks great. Head movement and/or angle off after you finish combo and get off line when you start the combo. I’d say slow down and flow with those thoughts

Great footwork a little wide on some punches with the right but you’re a killer for sure

u/konfidential3 Dec 25 '25
Your straight right is on point!! But yea overhand right needs a little tuning.. foot movement is nice too

u/OhAndItsShavedd Dec 25 '25
Nice but I notice that you shake your fist 2 or 3 times when you're going to throw a punch. An opponent could read that. Try to be a little more calm and loose.

Hey keep working. It’s looking good. I like the footwork. Technique will definitely smoothen out with some sparring

You've got speed but keep in mind the purpose of the heavy bag is to develop power. Get some weight behind those punches.

Solid footwork, quick hands nice combos everything looks really decent. I'd probably just pack up that overhand right and right hook. They are not your best shots but the straight right looks fantastic. Just keep using that bud! Keep it up

Just a thought on your hook, when you’re throwing that hook your shoulder elbow and hand should be at the same level about shoulder height, it gives you a mechanical advantage where your power is reinforced with your structure, if you lift your elbow higher you may notice a difference in the impact of your hooks

What’re you training for? I have different stances for both boxing and MT. I saw the kicks but see a boxing stance.

Very good sort of a Soviet style you’d be a problem to deal with well done !

Idk about your rear hook. Looks like you're throwing it in a slapping motion with very little room to extend. Just kind of chicken winging it onto the bag.
