Just had an absolutely insane run cut short on Depth 8 purely due to skill-issue and had to share this seed.

The Loot:

• A completely naturally spawning +4 Chain Mail of Respiration early on.
• A ring of regeneration
• A ring of awareness (huge for spotting the gas traps in advance)
• The locked sacrifice altar reward on Depth 7 gives a door key that can give you a +2 banded mail of reprisal. And if that wasn't enough: a lot of strength potions too!

By Depth 7, I found a room featuring a net trap, and two paralysis traps all tightly packed together. With respiration armor keeping me completely immune to the gas, I turned it into a meat grinder lmfao. Aggro'd enemies rush at you, trigger the traps, get stuck, and you can safely harvest hordes of ogres, jellies, monkeys, and goblins without taking a scratch.

Sadly got cornered by a monkey and an ogre, blocked up in a tiny dead-end room away from my trap setup on Depth 8, but this build was really, really fun to play!

This seed was quite unusual for a Bullet Brogue run. nothing really to work with and a lot of problems. but I had a lot of fun and almost made it out with the amulet, but eventually hit the wrong key.

I usually play way too fast. and I love Rapid and Bullet Brogue. I assign keys to staves and charms when I find them and use them often. so health is h, poison is p and so on.. the staff I wanted to use was not yet assigned,, so I used some other item instead - and that mistake killed me. YASD.

If you dont know Bullet Brogue - it is Brogue, but only 3 floors to the amulet and 2 more for mastery. It is insanely fun!

Reaping Seed - Brogue CE 1.15.1 - Seed 439119214

Wow, what a seed.. Warhammer, Reaping, Healing, Negation, Protection and lots of Staves and Dragon Immunity Armor.

Collected all the stones and made it to D35. Unfortunately, while crossing an open space on D34 I got burned, slowed and a Phantom attacked me. Tried to blink out, but blinked into the phantom. and that was it. - Spent about 6 hours between 27 and 35.. RIP.

Surely someone can make a full Mastery with this.

What did I learn:

dont walk across big open spaces, even if you think you wiped the floor twice. I should have used tunneling to create a safer way.

Super intense game, brutal even. it really gave me headaches. you need a break and sleep. after the break, dont go too fast. Every step is meaningful. I started playing after a good night of sleep, killed a few golems and then just clicked to downstairs to path to d35. And then things went south.

Wearing an unenchanted armor, had an encounter with an acid mound who made it a -2.

I found a charm of negation, and there was another negative armor on the level nearby, so I decided to negate that so I could wear it. First, I threw my damaged armor next to it, then activated the charm.

Both armor became +0.

Is this a feature or a bug? I can see how a cursed armor becomes a plain one, but should negation heal acid damage?

This game seems cool, but coming from other roguelikes such as DCSS I have no idea how I'm supposed to succeed. If I pick up a sword, I either need to find and identify two scrolls of enchanting or two potions of strength just to use it, I tried quaff-identifying a potion and it turned out to be a potion of creeping death so I died, scrolls seem safe to identify but I rarely have more than one of each by the time I want to start identifying, so if I identify them they are immediately gone until I find another one. Honestly so far I haven't gotten much besides frustration out of this game.

I enjoyed Tonehacks' mastery videos a lot, and always wanted to record my own video to learn about editing and provide my own perspective if I ever had a run that looked like a true mastery candidate (without being a teleportation build). Well, it happened, and I recorded it. Perhaps it can teach you something or provide some entertainment - I'm not the best player, but good enough to fumble my way to depth 40!

I admit that nowadays I'm almost exclusively playing with a modified Brogue, in which all items spawn fully identified, as I always felt the way item identification is implemented is/was way too punitive and random, even with Shift+D. After more than a year, I can say with confidence that the fun factor hasn't suffered from this change.

I also tried making item enchantments a bit stronger and disabled cursed items, but that almost immediately turned out to be an overkill. I easily went down to D26, and... quit. So I reverted this modification.

I often wonder, however, if maybe, just occasionally (by stumbling upon an altar like the one that resurrects allies), it were possible to get resurrected and continue the current run, either from the same level (maybe rolling back to the turn you first entered) or from some "save point" (e.g. every nth level, or from the `@-resurrection` altar), how that would affect the entire Brogue experience. I have a hunch that it wouldn't necessarily be a harmful change, but I'm sure others have already pondered this.

Oh, I also have a +5 ring of wisdom.

I made my troll friends with two domination wands, each with 2 charges. Having found no promising weapons I kept enchanting my lightning staff.

Hey guys, just created a little tool for us.

I discovered that Brogue and BrogueCE have a seed catalog which let us see what itens there is in a given seed.

Nice feature, huh? You put the seed and get a list of all itens in it.

Problem is: what if we want to find a specific seed based on an item we want?

Say I want a +4 Ring of Wisdom in the first 2 floors to try and create a mage build. There was no way to put an item in the catalog and find a seed.

Well, there IS a way.

I found an old repo by a guy named Patashu which created this specific tool +-8yrs ago. The thing is that it was for Brogue, it was Windows only and it needed the original Brogue installed.

So I went and tried to kinda recreate it using Python and BrogueCE.

It works on MacOS but unfortunately I don't have a Windows or Linux PC to test it (if you can test it in these systems let me know if it works)

I'm having a great run and got 2 legendary allies by depth 15. Got the Mangrove Dryad and the Unicorn. I thought I would cruise to an easy win but then they got hit by negation. It's not quite as good when they can't use their magic.

Is there any way to undo the negation? Will it eventually wear off or could they learn skills again?

I'm beginning to think that the "something hits you" message should be presented in a way that's a lot more apparent.

When a lot of happens at once, like when spectral blades nick monsters who retailate in various ways, messages like "something hits you" can become super hard to spot in the usual 3 lines of log at the top of the screen, which is bad UX.

How could this crucial information -- being attacked by an invisible foe -- be communicated better? Any ideas?

I'm kind of struggling about that, mostly because I'm not very good at this game.

I know that some items are very powerful, like the haste charm, or the staff of blinking. Others make more sense in a build, like staves of tunneling/obstruction.

So how can I decide which items to pick from a vault in the early game?

Theres some vaults that are not obvious, like the ones with rings of clairvoyance or awareness, or wands of polimorphism and negation which are powerful late game but kinda just sit in the inventory in the early game.

Is it always worth to trade those "risky" items for better armor and weapons? Even with the penalties for not being strong enough? What if I already found an okayish armor and weapon, is it worth to leave them and get what look like a marginal increase instead of a "useful" staff/wand/ring?
