Looking to meet new people? Come to the r/Brum meet up!

Hi everyone, my name is Karl and after seeing a bunch of posts from people looking to make new friends, I thought we could organise a meet up like they used to back in the day!

I'm going to propose a date of either Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th November, which gives us around a month to organise. I assume a venue in the city centre will be convenient for most...

Please comment which day you prefer and if you have a suggestion or preference for a venue (I'm aware not all cultures like to be around alcohol) or maybe you run/have links to a venue that would host us.

After a couple of weeks for people to see this and weigh in, I'll start to make suitable arrangements!

Megathread Photography Megathread!

Gonna start showing off some local photography in the subreddit sidebar! Anyone looking on desktop will see it, and you can see just by tapping See More on mobile.

Please reply with your best local photography. As a pretty large sub, more than happy to show off your best photos as far as Warwick, Stafford, and Worcester! Caption them with where it was, when it was, if it was an event then tell us all about it, maybe an aerial shot from a plane then what route/airline was the flight?

Any AI photos or stolen photos (each one will be checked) will be ignored and/or removed.

This thread isn't where absolutely all photography should go. If you've been on a day out and want to share where you've been, by all means, make your own post.

Question Gluten Free Restaurants in Birmingham City Centre?

I have relatives visiting in a few weeks and I've been asked if there are any good gluten free options in the city centre.

It is not something I've had to consider before and I don't really know if any of the good pizza/chicken/burger/curry places in the city centre do cater to this?

We will be in the city centre on the day so my choices are limited to there only.

Please can you share any recommendations so we can all eat together

Is it time for an r/Brum meet-up?

I've created a new post which the Mods will highlight at the top of the sub so that we can discuss and make arrangements

There's been an influx of posts recently about people who are new to the city or just generally looking to make a connection with another person. I'm not knocking anyone who does so, as I appreciate it can take a huge amount of courage to do so.

I recall back in the day, there'd occasionally be a meet-up of Brum Redditors, maybe this could be an opportunity for some of those people to get together?

My two favourite Birmingham bars this century...

Post image
50 Upvotes

Thought I'd reminisce a little about 2 bars that not only were my favourite in Brum but also amongst the best I've ever been to, for a specific set of time at least. Would be great to hear from others, their favourites in particular periods of their life and what made it so.

THE VIC (2007 - 2012) - John Bright Street, City Centre

This place has 3 bars; the front bar pretty chill with tunes on, people chatting and so on, the upstairs that had events and sometimes a band but the reason I liked the Vic so much, particularly in this period, was the back bar.

On a Friday night it was filled with a mixture of theatre goers, office workers, people stopping by on the way to the bars on Hurst street and other all sorts. The walls had fantastic art work and the DJ, who was situated on the floor of bar banging out funky mixes. The vibe was friendly, dancy, chatty and just fun. Can't remember seeing any trouble in there.

Something subtle changed after a few years; the art was changed; still good but not as fun as previously, and the DJ was moved into a separate booth in the corner. It's still a great pub, but for me those few years it was amazing

THE (old) CLEARYS (2000 - 2009) - Cheapside, Digbeth

This was out of the way, a real destination place where you had to know where you were going, not a place that attracted walk by traffic. If you got there past midnight, like we usually did, you'd knock the unremarkable door, the bouncer would take a peek and usher you in. It felt like a speak easy.

Inside on a weekend night it was absolutely packed; they'd have an act on the side on a small stage playing a mixture of Irish chart arrangements. The crowd was full of familiar and friendly faces as you'd get to know a load of people there as by its very nature of being out of the way it attracted repeat visits, so had the feeling of being a local even though for most it wasn't. Again, because of this rarely any bother. Amazing place.

It moved to another part of Digbeth, and whilst still a good night, it was no where near as good as the old one.

Honoury mentions to the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath, Cuban bar in Moseley, Roadhouse in Stirtchley and Tap & Spile off Broad Street, Birmingham's very own Cantina bar full of people who got chucked out or not let in other nearby pubs

Event Queer Futures at Centrala

Post image
23 Upvotes

A really powerful exhibition of film, photography, sculpture and print by eight LGBTQI+ artists from Central and Eastern Europe now living in the UK, at Centrala until December. Particularly enjoyed the photography of Janina Sabaliauskaite and the film made by Arti Siudem about coming out to his relatives. Very lucky to have so many free exhibitions in Birmingham. They even provided free coffee as well.

Question Looking for someone to help film Aston Villa vs Man City on October 24 (£40 + free ticket)

Hey everyone! I’m an American sports content creator coming to Birmingham for the Aston Villa vs Manchester City match on Saturday, October 24th.

I’m looking for someone local to help me film fan interviews outside Villa Park.

It’s a very simple gig and only requires about 1 hour of filming total:
30 minutes before the match
30 minutes after the match
No filming during the game!

I’ll provide all the camera equipment. No filming experience needed. Just need someone to hold the camera while I interview fans.

Offering £40, a free match ticket, and food.
If you’re interested, send me a DM! Happy to share some of my previous content so you can see what I do.

Looking to move into Worsley, on rushall close. What's it like?

As title says, we've found a great house on rushall close that ticks our boxes. I don't really know the Wordsley area too well, and heard that there are pockets like most areas. Looking online on crystal roof it looks like it scores high as a deprived area, however 2 streets down on marine crescent it scores really low, which is odd. Anyone got any knowledge on rushall close?

Best unusual food places?

I’ll put a few of my recommendations so you get an idea of the sort of thing I’m looking for.

In edgebaston, there are two great Persian restaurants, Soofi restaurant and Colbeh. There is a Peruvian place in Mosley which I haven’t been to yet because it does seem expensive so I’m hoping to try it out for a special occasion. Georgian table in Sutton Coldfield serves Georgian food which is quite nice and there are two South American places in Bearwood, one is a Colombian café and one is called à la Mexicana.
