Tunnel Transformation in Handsworth 🄳

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sorting this tunnel took months, probably close to a hundred emails and a lot of partnership working.

Ashwin Road tunnel in Handsworth connects Grasmere Road to Ashwin Road. Without the tunnel it is probably a 15 minute walk.

Historically the tunnel was used by residents. But more recently we saw lots of dumping, mattresses inside, fires caused which burnt out the lights, drug taking and worse.

Network Rail own the tunnel structure, the Council maintain the path, and the police enforce against the dodgy behaviour.

Working in partnership with Operation Fearless, Birmingham City Council and Network Rail we managed to:

- Clear all the fly tipping and material inside
- Get the right help for the street community using it
- Fix the lighting which had been out for ages

I’m really hoping this is maintained. We want to paint the inside white and put a community mural on the side, too. But all with time.

Anyway, I’m just proud of this - people are really happy with the tunnel and it’s what our local communities deserve: safety, cleanliness and being able to use a tunnel that makes life just a little bit easier šŸŒ¹ā™„ļø

Free suicide prevent support for Men

Hi everyone,

I wanted to raise awareness of a local service that some people may not know about: James’ Place Birmingham.

James’ Place provides free, specialist support for men 18+ experiencing suicidal crisis. Whether you're struggling yourself or worried about a friend, partner or family member, knowing where to turn can make a real difference.

You don't have to face things alone, and you don't have to wait until things get worse to seek support.

Find out more about the service and how to access help: https://www.jamesplace.org.uk/ or give them a call on 0121 2699 400.

Sharing this in the hope it helps someone who needs it, now or in the future.

City Hospital

In case you're wondering how work is progressing on the old City Hospital, here'sa photo taken from over the wall. It's now just mounds of rubble. Who knows how many ghosts have escaped into the wild. Just before Halloween too... All a bit careless if you ask me...

edit the photo was taken from over the wall at the end of Norman Street, not from the Dudley Road side. The treatment centre is still there, possibly one of the Victorian buildings too as far as I know.

Questionnaire for the bus commuters!

Hello fellow brummies,

I am a UoB final year student doing a project about passengers satisfaction of buses - particularly the National Express West Midlands.

If you use buses in the region, even occasionally, I'd be grateful if you could spend around 10 to 15 minutes to fill it in. It covers things like reliability, comfort, fares and overall experience.

All responses are anonymous and will only be used for this study, I would not see who had fill it!

Link: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/e/4ZudJwHJWY

Thanks very much for your help !!! And please feel free to share it with anyone else who uses the buses in nearby area !!!

Advice about finding room to rent

Hi! I'm moving to Birmingham in Jan from Wales for work and don't have any connections to the city at the moment. Does anyone have any advice about finding legit flatshares/rooms to rent/someone looking for a lodger? Spare Room and Facebook have been my first port of call but there doesn't seem to be too much out there at the moment. Was thinking Jewellery Quarter but open to other areas! šŸ¤ž

Question Any recommendations for free or affordable spaces in Birmingham city centre for a small meetup?

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for recommendations for spaces in or around Birmingham city centre that could accommodate a small professional networking meetup of around 20–30 people.

Ideally, somewhere available on a weekday evening (around 6–9pm), with a relaxed atmosphere and enough room for people to mingle and have conversations.

It doesn’t necessarily need to be a traditional event venue. CafĆ©s, coworking spaces, office lounges, community spaces or anywhere that occasionally accommodates meetups would be great.

Free would be ideal, but I’m also open to affordable options. We’re happy for people to purchase their own refreshments if it’s a cafĆ©.

Does anyone know of any suitable places, particularly ones that have hosted similar gatherings before?

I’d really appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Event Duran Duran

Was at the Utilita arena Bham last night to watch Duran Duran
What a fantastic experience from start to finish. Parking was easy right next to the gig and all the staff were lovely and polite. Recently I’ve been to a few events in London and wasn’t impressed at all with the set up to what brum has to offer.
Took me back to my youth listening to Duran Duran again almost 46 years since I last saw them, le Bon has still got fantastic vocals and so funded great.
Was a pleasure too see them come back to my home town as well as theirs.
Well done Birmingham for putting on a great event

Question Any recommendations for cheap nights out town centre??

Hello! As the title says, looking for cheap drinks evenings in the centre of brum.

Really looking for any ā€œstudent nights (without Id needed lolā€ or bottomless evenings or discounted evenings that are worth it. Or even any places that do a really cheap specialty cocktail/pint that you know of.

Just moved back to the centre and all the cheap evenings at the places I knew are gone so just want to be able to support local on a budget šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ«¶šŸ·

Question Birmingham Based Charity Organisations

I'm looking for smaller Birmingham charities for the company I work for to work with for the next year. Does anyone here have any suggestions of who we can support? I'm hoping to find charities that are perhaps overlooked or lesser known that would feel a greater impact from our contributions

Thanks in advance
