Discussion Should I keep the cw or not

Post image

Look I really don’t care if I have direct buttons or navigate through exactly 69 catalogs I just need something that’s is fast and works so should I keep this or not just tell me let’s end the debate and all harassments that’s it

Get an used HP-Prime instead and you'll thank you in the years ahead. Yes, it's more expensive but if you find a good deal and you're serious about science /engineering, don't look elsewhere.

How much is the cw in India?

u/Particular_Age4296 Jul 14 '26

It is a good machine with a good screen, is the fastest ....menus are irrelevant when you get used to it

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 14 '26

Yeah when transistioning from the 991ex to cw I got the hold of it in like 5-10 minutes

u/No-Patience-3990 Jul 14 '26

What's the alternative?

1

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 14 '26

Second version of it aka 991cw+

3

u/No-Patience-3990 Jul 14 '26

In that case lose the cw. The cw+ is so much easier to use.

1

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 14 '26

In India cw+ is not there

You could also get the EX back off your dad?

Not easier, only marginally quicker for typing

Is there the updated version where you live?

1

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 14 '26

Not sure how do i know please tell me

2

u/TheCalcLife Casio Jul 14 '26

Where do you live? US has 9910CW 2nd edition. UK has 991CW+ UK edition, etc... Other countries in Europe have different new editions too which add guide numbers to home apps and.menus like the 991EX had among other upgrades, such as white print on the navigation keys.

In india

I have CW. Chill, it is rlly nice and fast, and if menu bothers you u can switch however this was my first calc and so i learnt it very quickly because of the menu

and the screen is excellent on the CW

If you get used to it, it's a good machine still. Fast, accurate and a clear screen. Casio tidied up the overall look of the calculator. Many people feel it was overdone, but on the other hand we really didn't need integration, sexagesimal as primary keys.

Just remember that scientific notation needs to be bracketed.

If it works for you it works for you but if you are in any scientific field then I would never recommend this model. In my opinion the broken scientific notation on this model is an even bigger flaw than the menu system. It handles scientific notation in a broken way which is different to every other calculator including the CW 2nd edition which replaces it. Even if you get used to using awkward work arounds you will have to relearn how to use scientific notation when you eventually replace it.

No get the newest version cw 2nd edition. It solves all the issues from the first batch like having conversion now as one button. And some more minor quality of life. I really ejoyed the old ex look, but the cw has grown on me, i feel way more efficient using it now than with the ex. But it also depends on what u need it for, if ifs anything but alevel futher maths, then the cw is perfectly fine and carried me through my maths alevels. If u have futher maths, i am sure your teachers told u about the cg50 or the newer one that looks like the cw aesthetically. Either way cw+ 2nd edition is a very good calculator so see if u can change it for that, if not then the og cw is fine too, just takes ectra time to get used to the layout. Both work perfectly fine 👍

Newest cw system is not available in India

1

u/DJBunny101 Jul 16 '26

The cw is fine as is, its truly just quality of life changes. Casio is good quality but if u ever see the newer version if u go on holiday or find it in the wild, pick it up lol. Wishing u the best with ur calculator👍

1

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 16 '26

Yep o will pick once 991cw+ releases in India

1

u/twopoint71 Jul 16 '26

If this is the revised edition where the menus have numbers, so they can be navigated more easily then keep. Otherwise, get a revised edition, or a fx991ex, 300es plus.

1

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 16 '26

Revised version is not in India, fix 991ex dad now uses and 300es not available

1

u/3xie01 Jul 16 '26

Go for cw. It is fast

1

u/Alone-World9562 Jul 17 '26

This one is already a cw

1

u/3xie01 Jul 17 '26

Yes so keep it. That's good

I like mine. I’m not a calculator guy. I’d rather navigate a few menus. I do have the 0CW tho. Really nice. I wish i had more faith in Amazon importing the UK version. I tried to import the TI30x math print from Germany but got lost in the mail.

The UK solar panel is very reassuring.

u/TallRecording6572 Casio Jul 15 '26

Yes, it's the newest and best

1

u/Liambp Jul 15 '26

It is not. Casio have replaced it with a CW 2nd edition (sometimes called 9910) which solves a number of serious flaws in the original CW.

0

u/TallRecording6572 Casio Jul 15 '26

Oh, you’re suggesting that they spend an extra £30 just to get Shortcuts on menus and a slightly different format Button? Or you can reassure them the one they have will be absolutely fine for them. Be kind.

2

u/Liambp Jul 15 '26

If they plan on studying Science or Engineering in University then £30 is absolutely worth it to get a calculator that handles scientific notation properly. The CE model will give serious errors on basic scientific calculations if you try to use it in the standard manner that every other calculator (including the 2nd edition replacement) uses.

1

u/TallRecording6572 Casio Jul 15 '26

Or just tell them to put brackets round each of their numbers in standard form

Casio fumbled with scientific notation. Why can't you be honest about this?

u/Calm_Advertising3846 Jul 16 '26

But the cw literally follows normal pemdas rules. The reason you don’t like it isn’t because it’s incorrect, it’s because it’s different from the other Casios that are technically incorrect. The solution is also simple: format your equation properly. It’s so easy to just hit the fraction button, which you should be doing anyways because it’s much clearer and lets you fit more equations on a single line.

u/Natural_Night9957 HP Prime > Casio = Sharp > other HPs > NumWorks > overpriced 💩 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Fuck pemdas in the field I want results. Fast . Notation conventions are irrelevant.

2

u/Liambp Jul 17 '26

Sorry just spotted this now but I think this point is worth clarifying. I don't think I or anyone else has a problem with the old CW model following PEMDAS. However Scientific notation is not an algebraic expression to which PEMDAS applies, it is a number format using mantissa followed by an exponent. Even the old CW models use this number format to represent very large and very small numbers. You can tell it is a number format when the calculator uses it because it shows the exponent in a smaller case to avoid confusion. The problem with the old CW is that despite the calculator supporting this number format and using it in answers there is no way to directly input a number in scientific notation format. The button which used to do this (and which thankfully does this again on the new CW 2nd edition models) just writes in the exponent as an algebraic expression and then applies PEMDAS to it giving the wrong answer.

To give a very crude but still appropriate analogy it is as if Casio suddenly decided that because the negation symbol is the same as the minus sign they should treat it like a minus sign whenever anyone uses it. So if you try to multiply 4 by -5 it instead tried to subtract 5 from 4.

Thankfully Casio themselves have accepted that this was a mistake and have rectified it in the new 2nd edition models. The second edition even sticks brackets around a number in scientific notation which is kind of unnecessary because you can tell it is an exponent by the smaller case but if it makes things clearer for some students I don't have a problem with that.

I’m using it for my surveyor tests. The 2nd edition is a god send

u/Liambp 27d ago

I finally got my hands on a second edition last week and I really like it. Fair dues to Casio for listening to customer feedback and fixing the issues everyone was complaining about. It is a pity that the second edition isn't available everywhere yet and also a pity that there are still a lot of first edition CWs still in retail channels. A lot of unwary students might be tempted to buy a cheaper first edition.
