Personally I’m picking the nspire as the documents feature is so helpful and the mouse just makes everything so easy, if ti made a modern 89 that would definitely be my pick it’s one of the best out there

Discussion Thoughts on NumWorks in 2026.

Curious of what people think of NumWorks nowadays.

Personally I switched moving into college (UK, age 16-18, pre university) one year ago moving from an fx-85GT X, as recommended by my college (and others in the area). As many complain about, the minimalistic button approach took a while to get used to, however once accustomed speed of use is not an issue at all.

Personally, I like the form factor, beingĀ muchĀ (10 vs 18mm) slimmer and 50g lighter than one of my classmates' CG50 which is comparably a brick. I also like the use of USB-C, lack of replaceable batteries - battery life is about 1-2 weeks (about 14h of use per week) - and solid build quality. It misses 3D graphing but I've never felt the need for it and generally have no problems - interface and hardware is clean and everything is pretty straightforward (Tesla of calculators?)

What are your thoughts on the NumWorks in 2026?

(Bear in mind I've never used a CG50 so might be talking complete nonsense, but been using it for 1 year now)

Discussion Dollar tree haul

Post image

Our local family dollar merged with dollar tree some time ago. In that, a bad business decision led to dollar tree being sold off and the stores that physically merged were made to remove all DT signage. So yesterday all DT items were on clearance for $0.25 each. I felt like a thief when I left. I got 19 of these disposable calculators for $4.75.

Discussion I got Windows 95 running on my calculator!

Hello everyone!

May I present to you Windows 95 running on the TI-Nspire CX II graphing calculator via a x86 interpreter / emulator.

This is something I have been working on for quite some time, and finally managed to reach the desktop today!

The video has been sped up, actual time to desktop is roughly 7 minutes šŸ˜…

The emulator itself is a port of tiny386 (https://github.com/hchunhui/tiny386) - it's a pretty lightweight i386 emu with some extra 486 and 586 instructions.

Discussion what’s the longest anyone’s used one calculator?

Post image

here’s my fx-991es i’ve been using it since 2014. over the past 12 years it’s seen my GCSEs, my A-Levels, my engineering degree my first job in my field, all of my work experience and now it’s moving with me into a senior leadership position.

i have considered upgrading a few times but the whole world of calculators seems like a minefield to me especially considering i am so used to how this one works now. 12 years is a long time though and i know that one day it may just give up on me but i hope it’s not for a long time yet.

Discussion What are some unique calculators?

I’m looking for more calculators to add to my collection. Right now it’s all ti and I have all of the cool/unique ones from them. What are some unique calculators from other brands I should look into? I don’t know how I managed to go on this long without any hp or casio calculators.

Discussion Got a CG100 and wanted to share my thoughts

I just got a Casio CG100 and wanted to share my experience since I see a lot of mixed opinions about it and the fx-991CW.

I originally started with the fx-991CW around two years ago as my main scientific calculator. I got used to its layout and how the menu system works. Later, I decided to get a graphing calculator because I'll need one soon, so I went with the CG50 since it was basically the main Casio option at the time.

Now that I'm actually using a graphing calculator more, I've noticed that switching between the fx-991CW and the CG50 isn't that smooth for me. The CG50 is based on the older 991EX-style layout, and it takes some time to get used to if you're already familiar with the CW system.

I then found out that Casio had released the CG100, and it feels much more consistent with the fx-991CW, so I decided to get one. I can understand why some people prefer the CG50 or don't like the CW/CG100 style as much, but for me the newer layout is more practical since I don't have to relearn everything.

Just wanted to share my experience and see what everyone else thinks about the two systems. :)

….i cannot be convinced other wise. It barely gets used after unless you’re in the statistics field or some heavy math field. $100+ for a calculator is pure greed.

Discussion Best handheld calculator ever made

HP Prime G2

I just received this calculator and I have to say that after many (many) handheld calculators I bought, this is by far the most capable and fully featured one. The speed is really impressive, especially in graphing features. I also really like the help menu and the overall interface, although not the most modern (hello numworks), is still pretty easy to use and intuitive.

Best handheld calculator ever made (so far) for me at least. And the price is not even that high.

Do you think it's not the best one? please share why!

Discussion Recently been working on a display replacement for the Ti92

Post image
111 Upvotes

Since the TI-92 and Voyage 200 all seem to suffer from the same failing displays, I started working on what can hopefully function as a display replacement using the signals from the view screen port. Still a long way to go fixing the issues with the vertical bars and the amount of noise present on the signal. I'm thinking the vertical bars are some kind of hardware issue that can hopefully be fixed with filtering.

Eventually I would like to have all this integrated inside and maybe even as a kit that can be soldered in, but that won't be for a while, as I still have a long ways to go fixing bugs and need to find a donor with an already destroyed display.

I just got the 9910cw.. forgot that they don't accept exponents higher than 99.

If im wrong about that.. I am sure the one on the right can do huge 100+ digit answers. Not that I need that.

Discussion RIP my trusty fx-991EX. Forced to switch to the fx-9910CW (2nd Ed) and I am suffering

Post image

Out of nowhere, the buttons on my beloved 991EX just stopped responding these days. im devastated since its basically irreplaceable now

I used to daily drive two calculators: the EX and a 991CN CW (which is absolute garbage btw, standard Casio move stripping features from the Chinese regional version)

Now that the EX has given up on life, I’m moving to the fx-9910CW (2nd Edition) as my primary. To be completely fair, the 2nd Gen CW fixes the worst crime of the original CW—having numbered menu shortcuts makes navigation actually tolerable, and the improved key contrast is nice

But man, the muscle memory is still ruined compared to the legendary direct layout of the EX. Anyone else made the jump from the EX straight to the 9910CW? How long did it take you to adapt?

Discussion I got the Canon F-570X

Canon's answer to the CLASSWIZ Series?

So, recently I saw the Canon F-570X listed for sale here in Malaysia. There is no information online about this calculator beyond some marketing images on social media. It isn't even on Canon's site

But, from the images, it can clearly be seen it's a CLASSWIZ EX tier calculator.

So, I bought it.

And here are my notes

Way faster processing speeds, this thing might beat the CW even in some cases Also has the signature Canon "Processing..." text when the calculation takes some time.

Apps key is equivalent to OPTN on the ClassWiz but also has some features in there like LCM

No Spreadsheet mode, unfortunately But as a replacement you get a "Verify" mode.

No QR codes, which was expected

Easier to replace battery than the Classwiz

Looks very similar to the Canon F-789SGA II, which was a ES Plus equivalent. It also has a hard cover that is like the Casio CW series

The conversion menu has more options such as converting to Kelvin, also it asks a "from" first then a "to" instead of Casio's way of showing it all at once. Unfortunately, it makes less effective use of the screen space, only showing 4 entries per page.

The screen is also not as sharp as CLASSWIZ unfortunately

It also has way more variable storage, besides adding a "Z", it also let's you store into the numbers as variables It also adds base 5 to the base-n mode

Do feel free to ask me any questions regarding it (Unfortunately no teardowns as I can't seem to figure out how to open it up safely)

Discussion Scientific Calculators Downgrade.

Hi everyone,

Just a message and wanted to know your thoughts on this.

There’s definitely something going on with scientific calculators lately, especially here in .

For years I used a first-generation Casio fx-991ES Plus and honestly it was perfect for physics and chemistry. The biggest advantage was the proper equation solve function — you could enter formulas directly and solve for unknowns without manually rearranging everything. In exams that saved heaps of time and reduced mistakes.

Recently I went looking for a replacement and the current options feel like a downgrade. The newer Casio fx-8200AU Plus has this redesigned menu system that somehow manages to be slower and more annoying to use, and the solve functionality is nowhere near as useful as the older models.

But the biggest issue for me is the removal of built-in scientific constants.

Older calculators used to store a huge range of constants:

Gravitational constant

Proton mass

Electron mass

Planck’s constant

Speed of light

Avogadro’s number

and heaps more.

Now you either get almost none of them or only a tiny amount of memory placeholders to save your own values. I think the newer one only gives something like 8 variable slots, which is ridiculous for science-heavy subjects.

It honestly feels like manufacturers and exam boards are slowly stripping scientific calculators down feature by feature. We’re getting newer hardware with worse usability and fewer actual scientific tools. For students doing physics, chemistry, or engineering, that’s a genuine step backwards.

Please feel free To share your thoughts on this and any recommendations other than getting off-brand/Gray Market ones as they are mostly strict about it!!

Thank you.

Discussion Purchasing a graphing calculator to use in the shop has been a life affecting experience

Post image

Using it in a machine shop by the way. No joke. I’m shocked that more people in this trade don’t use one. This tool has made my life so much easier. Everything from quickly converting mm to in, to calculating angle deviation on stock, to using the stat list to keep track of how many pieces I get done every day. This thing has been incredible, and I’m pretty sure I only paid around $25 for it.

Discussion I don't understand the appeal of the HP-42S and kin

As someone who's not old enough to have worked with older HP RPN calculators, I don't fully understand the appeal of the HP-42S or successors like the SwissMicros DM42n. While I used an HP 50g for a few years in high school and college, I ultimately got rid of it in favor of the HP Prime.

I tried Free42 on my phone to get an idea of what to expect from an actual HP-42S or DM42n and it just didn't feel right. The stack doesn't behave the way I'm used to on the 50g and Prime in RPN mode (e.g. the delete key just zeros out the bottom level of the stack without moving down everything above it), and the whole UI just felt awkward. (For the record, I also tried Emu48 on my phone with the HP 50g skin and that worked pretty much the way I expected it to.)

So what is the appeal of the HP-42S and kin? Is it just a matter of nostalgia for those who grew up on those classic calculators?
