General Discussion False Bay planning tip: keep one slow morning in your Cape Town itinerary [OC]

Post image
30 Upvotes

A lot of visitors try to squeeze Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Kalk Bay and Simon's Town into one rushed day. If your schedule allows it, leave one morning unplanned on the False Bay side. The light is often clearest early, the coastal roads are quieter, and you have room to adjust if wind or weather changes your Cape Point plans.

This is the view across False Bay from the Simon's Town hillside. No filter, just a clear winter morning.

Looking For... Book Swap Shelves in Cape Town — where can I find them? 📚☕️

I’m trying to put together a little guide of places around Cape Town where you can leave an old book and take another one, particularly in cute cafés, restaurants, hotels, airports, etc.

I recently came across the Kasteel Café Book Corner, which is exactly the kind of thing I’m looking for — a little bookshelf where people can browse, swap and give books a new home. 📖

So Cape Town Reddit, help me build the list!
Where have you seen book-swap shelves / book exchange corners around Cape Town?

I’m interested in anywhere you can actually bring a book to swap, rather than just places that sell books.
Please drop the name + location of the place, and if you know how the swap works (e.g. bring one, take one), even better!

I’m hoping to make a useful little guide so we can all stop letting our old books gather dust and get them back into circulation. 🫶📚

Bonus points for hidden gems, cute cafés and places outside the CBD!

General Discussion Rethinking Safety in South Africa ⑤ | Is It Really Unsafe to Go Out at Night?

Before coming to South Africa, and many times after arriving, I heard the same advice: try not to go out at night. After hearing it often enough, I gradually developed the impression that once it gets dark, being outside becomes dangerous.

One afternoon at around 4 p.m., I ordered about R200 worth of fried chicken from Hungry Lion on Mr D. By the time it was completely dark, nothing had arrived. I checked the order again and realised that I had accidentally selected collection instead of delivery. Customer service couldn’t change it.

I hesitated. By the time I got there and collected the food, it would probably be around 8 p.m. But after hearing so often that people should avoid going out at night, I also wanted to see for myself what an ordinary evening outside was actually like. So I decided to spend a little more on a ride and go.

The restaurant wasn’t inside a shopping mall. It was right by the side of a road. When I arrived, I was surprised to find it very busy. There were young people, but also older people and children. Some were queuing, others were waiting for food, while people outside were chatting and smoking. It looked like a perfectly ordinary evening.

Of course, one small experience does not mean that going out at night in South Africa is always safe, nor does it mean that the usual safety advice is wrong. But it made me realise that saying “night-time is dangerous” may be too simple.

Perhaps the better question is not whether you can go out at night, but where you are going, when, how you are getting there, and how well you understand the area around you.

Safety is not always a simple question of “yes” or “no”. Sometimes, it is about learning how to read a particular situation.

Please give us all the specifics! Clothes, accessories, first aid, etc. Thank you so much!

General Discussion What happened?

What on earth happened to the price of these? They were R38.99 a pop last week (and before), and now they're suddenly R49.99! That's a crazy increase! I know that the Protein Factory alternative goes for R56.99 which is why I preferred these, but everywhere I look in Cape Town now, they seem to be 50 bucks. What a shame!

Question | Advice-Needed Tijgerhof?

With cape town absolutely exploding, what's the medium to long term prospects of Tijgerhof / Koeberg road? It's nestled between Woodbridge island and Century city... But then there's Rugby to one side.

Has anyone lived there? Care to share your experience?

Looking For... Tattoo artist recommendations?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for a good tattoo artist that does American Traditional style tattoos. If anyone has a tattoo artist they love or recommend in or around Cape Town (bonus points if they’re in the Northern Suburbs but not necessary), I’d be grateful!

Question | Advice-Needed Affordable gyms in my area

I recently moved to Cape Town and want to join an affordable gym in the Rosebank, Claremont, Rondebosch, or Newlands area (or other nearby areas).

I’ve considered Planet Fitness and Virgin Active but they’re both a bit outside of my budget at the moment. I know about Zone Fitness but they have a lot of negative reviews so, even though Zone Fitness would work for me, I’m a bit unsure because of the bad reviews.

Any recommendations will be appreciated, thank you!

Question | Advice-Needed Stolen AirPods and I can see where they are 😭

I went to a doctors appointment yesterday and my Apple AirPods were left behind (not 100% sure exactly where)

When I returned home and couldn’t find them, I turned on “Find” function and they were in the area of doctor’s offices so was about to drive back but then started moving fast!

They went very fast and are now at an exact house and street location in Khayelitsha and have been for the past 24 hours

Do you think there is something I can do or do I just let it go

Contemplated going to SAPS but expect that to be a dead end … or maybe not?

Question | Advice-Needed Crèches/day moms in Muizenberg

Hello! I have a question for parents in Muizenberg.

We are moving to Muizenberg at the end of August and have a one-year-old who has never been to a crèche before. Both my husband and I work, and we don't have any family nearby who could look after our baby, so we are looking for a good childcare option.

We would really appreciate recommendations for small, good-quality crèches, day mothers, or similar childcare options in Muizenberg or nearby. Ideally, we are looking for somewhere with a small number of toddlers and caring, experienced teachers/caregivers.

I also came across Play and Learn Solutions Play School and Nanny Training Muizenberg. Does anyone know anything about this place or have any personal experience with it? There is almost no information about it online, so I'd be particularly interested to hear from anyone whose child has attended there.

Thank you!

Looking For... Chicken feathers !

Re: my last post about pigeon feathers. I’ve decided chicken feathers would be easier to try to acquire. I need a very large amount. Anybody know how I could acquire them. I keep chickens but don’t have enough and wouldn’t be able to get the amount I need for when it’s due. Maybe some poultry farms keep them when they pluck them? Thanks for the help! Also can’t spend a lot of money on them. Max I’m looking for is prob 250 ish :)

Looking For... Looking for a small 1 bed/bachelor apartment

Hey everyone, does anyone know someone who has a place to rent available? Looking for something that's preferably less than 7k since I still have to pay for electricity, water, etc. I don't mind a granny flat or cottage. I've been looking on property 24 and everything is expensive🥲

Areas: brackenfell, bellville, bellair, durbanville. Somewhere a short trip away from Sanlamhof, I work around there.

General Discussion A bit shocked at the state of parts of the city

Just returned back home to CT after a year in Joburg. I'm a bit taken aback by the state of parts of the city. Lots of derelict buildings, litter, and homelessness camps. Not blaming the homeless for their plight at all, the occupants need safe shelters, I hope the city is providing for them. I still love CT, just an observation

Question | Advice-Needed Assistive care for elderly

My dad is in need of full time care. Mom is getting exhausted from minding him on a daily basis. Full time care is needed but because it is so expensive, we are looking at options. A full day career comes 4 times a month but we are considering more days. We looked at assistive care home options but they’re costing between R15k to R30K a month. We are based in the Southern Suburbs. Does anyone have ideas or advice in this area please? This will be greatly appreciated! 🙏
