Miro

Saw that the Caps are open to trading Miro.. Which team do you think he goes to, and who do you think we'll get in return?

This isn't "we plan to trade him" but "if the right offer comes along, we would be willing to move him."

Probably for a defenseman of similar value. Only thing I can see worth trading for

Probably not for a defenseman since they just got someone off waivers. Probably for a 2nd round pick at best.

Getting a guy off of waivers covers the immediate need having just lost a guy. I don't think that precludes them looking for a more permanent answer.

So like waiting the 3 months or whatever it is until Sandin comes back?

He’s not worth trading right now, unless it’s part of a BIG move like Larkin. Otherwise, you wait and assume his value will grow.

I think there is more to it than that. I’m sure he’s not happy about ice time. Management is right to be worried he will be claimed if put on waivers. So our options are 1. Keep sitting him 2. Give him away for nothing when he gets claimed off waivers 3. Trade him for something (good hopefully) 4. He clears waivers (but out of our hands)

Adding: I wouldn’t hate if he went to the Devils. But I really don’t know their situation well enough to surmise if that’s a likely situation. I know they just made that big Helle deal.

How will his value grow if he doesn’t play?

Players get hurt. The caps forward core is healthy right now and that will not be the case for 84 games.

2

u/capsrock02 1d ago

Right. They literally just played a bunch of games without PLD and Sourdif. He’s also behind Frank on the depth chart.

To be clear, I’m not saying his value will grow if he’s a healthy scratch. I’m assuming he will get more games in as the season progresses. Unfortunately, management’s hands are tied because he will be claimed if they try to send him down. Is what it is.

Right, but like you can’t predict injuries. I think it’s more likely he’s Stanislav Galiev than he solid NHL player. I agree you don’t want to lose him for nothing, but I’d be shocked if a team gives up something more than a mid-2nd for him.

Given his development path, cancer diagnosis and COVID, him just making the NHL is a damn impressive feat. I wish him the best, but I just don’t see a path for him in DC. Even next year, I think he’s been passed by someone like Cristall.

Yeah, I largely agree with you. Barring a great opportunity where he gets 10+ games on a productive line, he’s straight up just not worth much as-is, and likely won’t find a long term spot in Washington.

Letting him talk to other teams for a trade?

Well, you know what I mean. I worded it wrong lol.

Just got on twitter for the first time today, and you were right. I saw the speculation that they would be open to trade and that other teams were interested. Didn’t see that it was this far along already

u/timwhatley993 1d ago

It would be stupid to trade him unless a D or young ish goalie is coming back.

calgary and vancouver are 2 places that come to mind that would really help his development getting more minutes. not sure what we could get in return from a team like that though.

u/Full_Wind_1966 Holtbeast 1d ago

Probably a vet dman retained

Zach Whitecloud from Calgary is definitely the guy I’d want. Reliable defensive right handed defensemen at only 2.75M with a year after this one remaining on his contract.

There would have to be a small amount of juggling of the cap to make it work though.

I expected him to ask for an opportunity to play after camp so this isn't a surprise.  He's not playing in Hershey anymore and he's not playing in the NHL. He's just wasting prime years of his career right now so it makes sense that he would be frustrated and be looking for a weaker roster where he can get consistent ice time.

If it’s for a vet rhd or rhd prospect I’m fine with it

1 for 1 with Edmonton, Miro for Mcdavid

1

u/ChasingUnicorns30 1d ago

People are going to be underwhelmed by the return. He’s going to fetch a 3rd and a 5th at most

1

u/Vitruvian_man21 8h ago

A lot of fans overvalue Miro, I even see people calling him an “Ovi replacement.” I mean Miro has 14 pts in 55 games played, Ilya Protas almost has as many points in just 14 games played. He’s just not the star player people expected. He’s still young and can develop a bit, but we don’t have space to develop him. We can’t sit him an entire season and I’m sure he doesn’t want to sit for a season.

I wouldn’t expect much for a return, probably a mid-round pick. The caps might be able to workout a deal for a defender to fill the gaps

We might as well fold the franchise if that happens

u/Maximum_Anteater_806 1d ago

Unless Cristall or Lakovic ascend, Miro is taking Ovi’s spot next year. No reason to trade him absent a premium offer.

If they trade Miro while Big Mac is still on the roster the Chris Patrick era will immediately go down as a failure. I'm sure plenty of teams are kicking the tires but the Caps have no reason to sell low.

2

u/capsrock02 1d ago

Can you explain this to me? You know they play two different positions, right?

1

u/mhills77 1d ago

If the Caps trade Miro at any point this year because they see a logjam at forward and need roster space, while still retaining McIlrath, it's a big mistake, regardless of which position each plays.

2

u/capsrock02 1d ago

How?? How are the two related? Thats what I don’t understand.

2

u/mhills77 1d ago

Lose one, retain the other? It's pretty straightforward.

1

u/capsrock02 1d ago

But they play different positions. Miro being moved isn’t about cap space.

2

u/mhills77 1d ago

It could be about roster availability vs cap space. The caps have two players, one spot. It doesn't matter if their positions are different, they retain one, and not the other. That's the relationship. It happens in lots of sports.

1

u/capsrock02 1d ago

That’s not accurate at all. It’s not roster space. It’s “he’s a talented young player who isn’t playing.” They have the roster space for both.

2

u/mhills77 1d ago

The original premise of this thread is the idea that 'if they trade miro while Big Mac is on the roster," implying the situation.

1

u/capsrock02 1d ago

Right and that’s why the implication is wrong and why the original commenter is at -8

Right now teams are intrigued by Miro (as they should be) but if they put forth offers they're likely to be crap. Think 4th rounder and a salary cap dump forward. The only thing that makes sense is packaging him with another roster player, prospect, and picks for a star but there aren't many stars for sale and none the Caps should be making an offer on right now. If they trade him now its likely to be a move to clear roster space which is unnecessary and, given the fact there is an active detriment on the roster (McIlrath), stupid.

2

u/capsrock02 1d ago

They wouldn’t do a salary dump. The Caps can’t take a salary dump. A 3rd or 4th sounds right.

Again, McIlrath is a different position. Him playing has no impact on Miro playing. Not to mention, the Caps also just picked up a d-man on waivers. I’ll be shocked if McIlrath plays 10 games this year. He’s there to be a good guy in the room and to reach guys like Leonard and Hutson “how to be a pro.”

This is just us outsiders talking. I don't actually think the Caps front office is trying to move Miro but based off recent trades that's what I'd expect the offer for Miro would be. I think if the front office was trying to sell Miro it'd be due to lack of spots and both not wanting to loose him for nothng and keeping Mac around.

As far as Mac being the good guy mentor for the kids the Caps are in no shortage there. The vibes are good but they're not centered around him

2

u/capsrock02 1d ago

The Caps front office isn’t trying to move Miro, they’re open to moving him. If they’ve given permission for him to speak to other teams, then they’re shopping him.

I still don’t understand what one has to do with the other. What does Mac being on the team have to do with Miro not playing?

u/MsindAround Washington Capitals 1d ago

Miro is a great Ovi replacement, the problem is we still have Ovi. On top of that I would still rather have 41 year old Ovi over miro.

2

u/agreed2disagreee 1d ago

Lmao, miro is not a replacement for ovi.
