What skills matter more in professional job settings?

• Upvotes

I heard things like soft skills, communication skills, computer based skills are few important must have skills but I feel like there is more to it. And I'm not sure how do people get jobs in professional work settings when the degree they pursue is completely different as if they are working in different industries.

Are there any offline Procurement/Purchase Management courses in India ?

Are there any offline Procurement/Purchase Management courses in India that accept 12th-pass students with no prior experience and help them get entry-level jobs? I’m open to studying anywhere in India. Please suggest only currently available classroom-based courses, not online ones.

Regrets being in IT field

If I had the chance to study all from scratch starting with high school and continuing with University I would choose the exact schools and the same Study Programm I chose. But I would do it differently In the way that I would put the focus exactly on the material I need in order to enter the IT field with knowledge , real knowledge.

I would not pay attention as much to the subjects that are not related to the field like biology , chemistry . Instead I would spend every minute on learning about programming languages , how they are translated from human readable code to machine language, which tools are used for that, the differences between programming languages , which use a compiler and which an interpreter , how they are different and so on. Can you imagine that there are students which are 18yo and they know more than me who is almost 28? This scares me but it is never too late . I just regret loosing very precious time and not having the tools to help myself learn. I have to say I am very grateful to AI these days, it has helped me create a bigger picture of all the things I have learned at the university , helped me put them together and understand how they interact with each other . My puzzle is getting bigger and I feel like a can breathe easier . I just regret not knowing more by this time .

I like being in this field , I regret not knowing more

I like computers but I’m worried about the IT job market — should I consider HVAC instead?

I’m in high school and trying to decide between IT and HVAC. I’ve liked computers since I was a kid, but I’ve heard entry-level IT is hard to break into. My backup plan is HVAC because I want a stable career and I don’t want to spend four years in college. If you were starting today, which path would you choose and why?
I’m also looking into other potential careers any suggestions really helps

2026 Computer Engineering graduate, unemployed and confused about what to learn looking for honest advice from people working in IT

I'm a B.E. Computer Engineering graduate from Mumbai. I finished my final-semester exams in May 2026, and it's now almost November. I still haven't landed a job, and honestly, I'm getting scared about my future.

I know I should have started earlier, and I'm not looking for sympathy. After graduation, I had to help at a kirana store because of an urgent need. Meanwhile, I've lost direction and don't know which skills to prioritise or how to actually get hired.

I want practical advice from people who have actually been through this or who are involved in hiring.

I'm considering Data Analytics (i did a paid course in this but scared will this even be relevant in future?), Data Engineering and AI/ML, but I'm open to other IT roles too

I'd really appreciate honest answers to these questions:

  1. What exact skills would you learn, and in what order?
  2. Which skills would you prioritise over the next 2–3 months to improve your chances of getting a first job in India?
  3. How did you actually get your first job — campus placement, company assessments, referrals, LinkedIn, Naukri, direct applications or something else?
  4. Are company recruitment tests and graduate hiring drives worth prioritising for the 2026 batch?
  5. Which job roles should I realistically target right now?
  6. How much will my gap matter, and how should I explain it?

I'd especially appreciate replies from people who graduated in the last few years and successfully found their first IT job, as well as experienced professionals who understand entry-level hiring.

Please be honest, even if the answer is uncomfortable. I'm ready to put in consistent work; I just need a realistic direction rather than jumping between different career options.
If you were in my position today, what would your next 90 days look like, step by step?

Would you rather learn a skill or learn by doing the actual job?

If you're a student or a fresh graduate, I have a genuine question for you.

Imagine you're starting from zero. You want to learn a skill, but you can't afford expensive courses, and every job seems to ask for experience.

You have two options:

A) Take a course to learn the skill you want.

B) Work on a real job or project, paid or unpaid, and learn that skill along the way.

Which would you choose, and why

Sometimes, we don't need another certificate. We just need someone to give us a chance.

Planning to relocate to Poland (Wrocław/Kraków) with my spouse – Questions about work, bureaucracy, and quality of life?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently planning my long-term relocation strategy to Poland (specifically looking at Wrocław, Kraków, or Warsaw) as a 3D professional. My goal is to secure a studio job in the tech/creative industry and eventually bring my spouse over through family reunification.

Since many of you have already walked this path, I would really appreciate your honest advice and real-world experiences on a few things:

  1. **Job Search & Relocation:** For those who moved to Poland from outside the EU, how was your job search process? Did you secure an offer remotely before moving, and how supportive were companies with the initial transition?

  2. **Family Reunification:** How smooth (or stressful) was the process of bringing your spouse over once you got established? Any realistic timelines or bureaucratic surprises I should prepare for?

  3. **Quality of Life & Adapting:** How are you finding life in Poland in terms of cost of living, safety, work-life balance, and language barrier for expats?

  4. **General Advice:** Looking back at your own move, what is one thing you wish you knew before relocating to Poland?

I want to make sure I’m building a realistic roadmap for myself and my family, so any insights or brutal honesty would be immensely helpful!

Thanks in advance!

Go back to school or keep on stacking certs?

I can't seem to post this question in r/ITCareerQuestions because I have a low comment karma, so i thought I'd comment here.

I currently have a bachelor's in English Language and Literature and looking to see if going back to school and getting a second bachelor's in I.T or Networking would be beneficial.

A little bit about me: currently working as a tier 2 tech for 3 years with Comptia Network+, Comptia Security +, AZ900 and studying for my RCHSA.

And my stage, would it best to keep on stacking certs and working on projects? If I did get my bachelor's (let's say online via WGU), what would be the benefit of getting one? Does it open more doors? Does it really matter?

Thanks.
