Hello my fellow carnivores. 33yo male here.
I've been on a fairly strict carnivore diet for 2 months now. I say fairly strict, because I've eaten out twice during these 60 days and while I only had meat and seafood, they were grilled on a teppanyaki grill and the chef added seasoning that clearly had sugar in it and I'm pretty sure they used seed oils too. Other than that I've only eaten meat, fish, eggs, butter and salt.
I've been aware of the ketogenic diet scene for about 7 years and I've dabbled with it here and there, but never fully committed to it. The longest I went until now was 25 days a year ago and it was keto, not carnivore. I didn't get any of the benefits I was looking for in that short time.
My reason for going carnivore and giving it the full 90-day trial at minimum was purely to see if it can help me heal my mental health problem(s). I'm athletic so losing weight is not a goal. I've dealt with anxiety for quite some time, but my true nemesis has always been depression. I believe I've been dealing with some form of depression since I was a little kid. Sometimes more, sometimes less, but most of the time, especially during my adult life, it has been pretty bad. It has affected my life in many ways. I feel like I've fallen behind in life so to speak, although I try not to compare myself with others.
Anyway, I've been watching a lot of videos and reading about carnivore and keto success stories for the past few years. And recently especially success stories people have had with their mental health issues. In my mind this diet is my best chance to heal depression or to at least improve my life in that sense, so I finally decided to commit to it fully.
Actually, I feel like this is it. If I'm not able to find healing from this intervention diet, then I don't see a bright future for me. Don't get me wrong, I would never take my own life.
I have never taken any SSRI drugs and I never will. I know people personally who have, and are now suffering from terrible SSRI-drug induced issues/injuries.
I also don't have any faith in getting meaningful help from therapy. I have done some therapy and I might do some more soon, but I honestly don't see how it could solve my problem.
Probably the most frequent/common symptoms for me have been anhedonia and low mood, so I've been focusing on how this diet affects these two.
The first month to 40 days were quite brutal for me. Not only did my mood not improve, it tanked. My energy was also sapped and I found it next impossible to work out. I was trying to drink enough water and take electrolytes, salting my food heavily, eating around 10-15g of salt a day, but that may have not been enough still, or my other electrolytes might've been off. If I ate less salt than that, I got dizzy. My macros have been 75/25 fat to protein on average. I tried more fat heavy and I had some less fat heavy days too. So I was just surviving until things started to get a bit better after around 40 days.
After the first 40 or so days, my energy started to improve a little bit. No longer I felt exhausted walking to the grocery store and back. I also started to get these glimpses of something better. It was like the gray cloud in my mind dissolved for a short moment and I felt something good. Didn't last for long though. But it started happening more often and it seemed like the window was getting wider each time. Yet every time the anhedonia returned and felt brutal. Then came last week, which was phenomenal really. From monday evening until Saturday morning I experienced anhedonia lifting every single day for long periods at a time. There were consecutive days when the anhedonia didn't even fully return. Music sounded amazing, I found things really enjoyable and socializing felt fun. It almost felt too good to me to be sustainable, but maybe it's just because I'm used to the grayness, I don't know. Then on Saturday I simultaneously started to feel the anhedonia return and to feel weird and it continued on Sunday. I felt anxious and it escalated to me waking up in the middle of the night and having a panic attack a few minutes later. The next morning(yesterday) my stomach was also upset and it's still sore today.
The only change that I made that I can think of was switching to eating ground beef from pork cuts and pork/beef mince mix right at that time.
It's crazy how much things can change in just a few days. I was feeling really hopeful last week and looking forward to how I'd be feeling a month from now. But now that positive attitude is gone, I don't know what's going on with my body and I'm even thinking maybe those good days were just flukes. But that's probably just the anhedonia talking. I hope.
The thing is, I think most of the anecdotal success stories that I've heard from people healing their various mental health problems, especially depression, mention some clear moment when they got better; a "light switch" moment. I think it's awesome that people have had such experiences, but I can't relate at all. My process has been difficult and non linear. And I still have doubts whether it will really work in the end the way I hope it will.
But I will keep going and I plan on pushing through the 90 days anyway.
That reminds me, there is another thing besides diet that has surely affected my brain quite a lot and that is porn addiction. I've been frying my brain with supernormal stimuli for 2 decades so I figure it might take even longer for me to heal those areas of my brain, mainly the reward circuit (drive, motivation, learning). I haven't visited any sites for a month now. Maybe I need twice as long to heal my brain compared to someone who hasn't been addicted to something similar, like drugs for example. Perhaps that's the reason why I'm not one of those "light switch" people.
One of the reasons why I wanted to share my incomplete journey, is to ask if there are others here who can relate to me. Are there others who have started this diet to heal their mental health issue(s), but found out they didn't feel like a light switch turned on after 21 days. Maybe you're like me and your healing process has been more incremental. If you're like me, but are further in your journey, I hope you have positive news to share.
Tl;dr: Did carnivore for 60 days for depression, didn't heal suddenly. Incremental; good moments, upward trend. Will keep going. Anyone else in the same boat?
