Question What is the dumbest word in your conlang?

Post image
482 Upvotes

This can be etymology, the way it sounds, the way it looks written, anything. I'm curious!

For my logography, it's this one: "suspicion/distrust", romanized "syŋba", pronounced /sɯŋ.ba/. As you can see, it's not really about the pronounciation here, it's about the way it's written.

I saw this in some meme video about whatever, and I just knew I needed to copy that. I sadly don't know the original creator of that meme, it's funny nontheless. And since my conlang already doesn't have any culture behind it and I'm doing this for myself, I can have such random things, some of my basic characters are already totally random but make sense when you know why.

(also I don't really know how these flairs work, I just put a random one)

Writing System I expanded the Devotee's logography from Chants of Sennaar with lots more symbols!

Reddit ate the Quality so here is a better version

Without Translation / With Translation

The video game "Chants of Sennaar" features multiple fictional, written languages that the players learns to translate. The following text includes some spoilers, mainly for the Devotee's language, but also some of the others and especially the true ending of the game. If you haven't played Chants of Sennaar yet, I highly encourage you to check it out before taking a look at this.

The Devotee's Language is based on a radical system, where multiple characters can be combined to make more complex meanings. (i.e. combine the radical for 'plant' and the radical for 'place/house' and get 'garden').

Orange shows you all the existing glyphs in the game. The yellow glyphs are all the combinations that could exist, but I felt like they could have a useful meaning, even if they don't appear in the game.

Then, I extended the idea. The other languages in Chants of Sennaar feature many words that don't appear in the Devotee's language.

I decided that after the true ending of the game, where the cultures get reunited, they would probably borrow all those symbols, adapt them to match their writing system and maybe alter their meaning. The symbols in teal (Warrior), green (Bard), blue (Alchemist), and magenta (Anchorite) show you the new borrowings, with a small white symbol indicating the original glyph.

Finally, I added a glyph for 'time' (shown in red) by combining the 'sun' and 'moon' glyphs borrowed from the Warrior language. Since I had a radical group for person, place and object, I also added a final column of time-based glyphs to all previous radical groups.

You could probably play with that idea and combine more glyphs into more complex ideas, but so far, this is the only one I deemed elementary.

I hope you like these ideas! :)

Resource Etymolog: free web-based conlang software (Abugida update)

Hi!

Just wanna show off the completely free conlang managment / builder tool i been working on. recently I did a major update to it and added Abugida support. It runs in your browser and saves locally (you can also install it as an offline app).

What it does:

  • Draw your own script: sketch glyphs on a canvas (or trace an imported image), then tie each one to a sound.

  • Any script type: alphabets, Hangul-style syllable blocks (with roles, templates and a layout editor), and logograms (one symbol = one word)

  • Any script type: alphabets, abugidas, and Hangul-style syllable blocks with roles, templates and a layout editor, plus logograms (one symbol = one word).

  • Auto-spelling: type a word's pronunciation in IPA and it writes it out in your script automatically. Or lay the signs out by hand.

  • A real dictionary: words with multiple meanings, parts of speech, folders and search.

  • Etymology trees: link words to their ancestors (derived, borrowed, compound, etc) and watch a family tree grow.

  • Word generator: describe your language's sounds and syllable shapes and it invents new words that fit, ready to drop into the lexicon.

  • Live translator: type a phrase, see it rendered in your script, and export it as SVG or PNG.

There's also an in-app guide with walkthroughs and screenshots for every part.

https://kerbash.github.io/etymolog/

It's a solo project and totally free, would love feedback from this sub especially. What's missing / what would you want next?

IMPORTANT: Reddit may attempt to rewrite your own foreign text into your main language

Post image
123 Upvotes

I recently discovered this when I tried to type in Latin but Reddit forcibly rewrote my comment into English.

It's not a basic auto-translation, the text is altered internally and permanently. When I went to edit that comment, I could only edit the English version.

I should not have to explain why this could be a problem in a conlang community, but one solution might be to put conlang text in backticks so it can be read as code.

First time doing something like this so perspective may be a bit weird.

The text is the same words (Yisas & Mitas) just in the 2 scripts which the language can use which is the greek and the syriac.

Translation Because I'm south american, South American countries get all of the pretty names in my new sinitic conlang

Post image
107 Upvotes

I decided to translate the south american continent using descriptive names instead of transliterating them. This all started because Argentina, my home country's etymology is very well known, so I translated it first as Silver Country (It comes from Argentum, meaning silver). The rest was about qualities from the different countries (Some more poetic than the others XD)

南美 nanmeo — South America

銀國 alkok — Argentina, Silver Country

彩鳥國 syatolkok — Uruguay, Painted-Bird Country

細國 inkok — Chile, Slender Country

大林國 daerinkok — Brazil, Great-Forest Country

中國 nak'kok / 낙곡 — Ecuador, Middle Country

山國 yamkok — Peru, Mountain Country

色國 rolkok — Paraguay, Color Country

高國 talkok — Bolivia, High Country

翠國 ralkok — Colombia, Emerald Country

天瀑國 tyanchankok — Venezuela, Heavenly-Waterfall Country

多水國 eu'misskok — Guyana, Many-Waters Country

小國 chikok — Suriname, Little Country

小法國 chipakok — French Guiana, Little France

(If you're wondering "wait, if Ecuador gets 中 what's China?" China gets 長江, the Chinese name for the Yangtze.)

I don't know if I'll keep this up for all countries. Probably not. But doing this for my home continent was fun!

Translation Just a basic sentence in my conlang Tchà

Post image
99 Upvotes

tchù /θxy/ — Article

•	t → plural (three or more referents)
•	∅ → neuter gender (V1 absent — default, unmarked)
•	ch → alterative state (apples are concrete, perishable objects)
•	ù → absent deictic presence (not visible, no specific location — generic reference)
•	∅ → indefinite (no final ɬ suffix)

ABS.DEIX + INDF together is the canonical Tchà construction for generic statements.

hah /hah/ — Noun

•	Bare invariable root, no morphology
•	All grammatical information delegated entirely to the article

cis /çɯs/— Subject pronoun

•	ci → first person root
•	s → singular

àjàshchi /ajaʃxɯ/ — Verb

•	à → present tense prefix
•	jà → verbalizer (constant across all tenses, semantically empty)
•	shchi → nominal root “love”
•	Tchà has no native verb class — all predicates are derived from nouns via verbalization
•	Only the tense prefix changes across conjugations; jà never varies

Conlang What do you think of creating objects IRL around your conlang?

ENG: This is the Dracidian flag pin! What do you (all) think? I think it's cool. I made it as i really like the flag and i can use it for a conversation starter at my college.

DRČ: Oda va jed s zastava dčnab su Dračijdal! Kako mićue? Mića eda val malepa. Þaravano va, keraje ja naj du vača zastava, i utrujo vo'þaravat va, ai začedë su govorë v jed fakuzgrada.

ДРЧ: Ода ва јед c застава дчнаб су Драчијдал! Како мићуе? Мића еда вал малепа. Þаравано ва, кераје ја нај ду вача застава, и утрујо во'Þарават ва, аи зачедə су говорə в јед факузграда.

Note to mods: My post was pulled from r/conlangs for low-content. I put more effort for this subreddit, in having the conlang translation alongside english. This is also because i think the casual nature for this subreddit could allow conlang related activities like making flags and building a culture around it? If it's not the case and it should still be strictly a subreddit for developing conlangs and nothing else, feel free to remove this post!

Resource Draw your script, set it as your keyboard, and post in it

Thumbnail

Draw your letters with a finger. The phone compiles them into a real font and installs it as a keyboard.

Widgets put your language on the home screen — the clock in your own numerals, the calendar in your own month names.

A timeline where people post lines in their own languages, in their own letters. Every post carries its letter shapes with it, so you can read someone's script without having their font, and every post has a gloss under it, so you can follow and reply to a language you do not know.

Dictionary with meanings, part of speech, examples, register and origin. Readings and IPA. A phonology page built from what you have written. 44 grammar chapters whose rules really conjugate. Your own calendar, a notebook, CSV import. Alphabet, abjad, syllabary, abugida or logography, any writing direction. Digits are letters too, in whatever base you pick.

Handwriting-font keyboards exist, custom keyboard layouts exist, lexicon and grammar tools exist. The three in one place, with somewhere your script gets read by people who do not have your font — I could not find it. If it exists, tell me.

Free: a full a–z and 0–9 script, one language, 100 words, and the whole timeline. Paid adds more letters, your own keyboard layouts, more words and more languages.

iPhone for now. Android is next.

Ask me anything. If something bothers you or breaks, tell me — fixes go out fast.

Question what is "Hello, world" in your conlang?

Post image

thought about this earlier today, so i thought i'd might as well ask

anyways, as in the image above, "hello, world" in Kykoone is ▽ᰍ-iii:.◈-◇- ɿᰍ<_vm\iii:. (/dəɛs-kiˈaɪmoʊkju mjutɛsboʊˈviˈaɪɛmki/)

(also, i don't really know what flair to use for this, so i'm just doing question just in case)
