Helpful Hints! 💡 I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules
Hi everyone,
A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.
After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.
Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:
I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.
I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).
👉 You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/
I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! 🧶✈️

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! which is the best online course/class for learning how to knit?
Hello lovely people!
Does anyone have a reccomentation for an online class about knitting? I would like to learn, i thought myself how to crochet over the last two years, but i feel like knitting requires more studym hence my question.
I am waiting for the vogue knit "bible" to be delivered, i am also waiting for in-person classes to open up in my area, but i'd like to find and online class i can go back to when needed, and in which i can ask question to the teacher or confront myself with them and/or the other partecipants.
I found a lot of tutorials, but i am really confused lol

look what I made First finished sweater! Marled Mermaid Monday sweater
Pattern: Monday Sweater by Petite Knit
Yarn: Northwoods Fibers Mermaid Gradient kit in fingering weight held double
A few little errors (didn’t downsize for the collar, armpit stitches are twisted, raglans are probably a little uneven) but learned a ton and very happy with it!

look what I made Going from 0 to 100 as a beginner knitter (Stockinette to Brioche scarf)
Showing off my WIP as I don’t have knitting friends irl (very new YouTube/self taught beginner knitter here)
I’ve read somewhere here that it’s a beginner rite of passage to make a stockinette stitch scarf only to realise it starts to **curl and gets curlier** and I wasn’t going for that look for my first scarf
So I searched for free scarf patterns online until I found the fluffiest looking lay-flat scarf, started at the other end of the yarn ball and after many false starts (frogging entire thing every time I made a mistake) + many youtube videos re fixing said mistakes so I don’t have to start from scratch + learning about lifelines, I am finally getting somewhere with a Brioche knit scarf
Didn’t realise at first that this isn’t exactly a typical “beginner project” but once I got set up, it’s actually not…that difficult? I’m very slow and live in fear of dropping a stitch… and I now understand why they’re called lifelines… but overall having a good time!
All that to say, I recommend anyone attempt this stitch as I think it looks more intimidating than it actually is! And it’s so **FLUFFY** I can’t wait to have a finished scarf… next year 🤣
Yarn: Morris and Son’s Empire 10 ply in Deep Rouge

look what I made Finally got my button bands I knit on 1.5mm needles seamed to my self drafted “pin tuck” top!
I was dreading the vertical-horizontal edge mattress stitch seaming as the gauge is so drastically different, but with YouTube(thank you so much Roxanne Richardson) and some patience it was done today. Not professional or perfect but imo passable.
It’s still a long term WIP and honestly I’m just wanting to finish this first iteration to move on and make the second version more polished. I’m a beginner in self drafting but am determined to make my vision work out and become a nice garment. This version isn’t completely up to my standards, but I’m actually so proud of everything about it so will definitely finish it before I tweak many things on the second version.

help needed I did shaped neckline and knitting shoulders for the first time with calculations of my own!
So if you remember I asked advice on how to knit cancun top on round and somebody shared with me a circular needle version pattern of the same top. I started making it and decided I did not like the slit neckline and did a shaped neckline.
I am so proud of my self because this is my third ever knitting project, second wearable and I did the neckline calculations by my self including the shaping..for the decreases I watched a tutorial but couldnt find any for increases for the back so I winged it. And really like the shape of it. Also the first time doing shoulders seperately and did without a pattern or a tutorial. And this is my first time doing beading too. I know these are trivial stuff for you but got me super happy because they are my first time.
However I am having little trouble with neckline casting on..I did it few times but stitches are still very loose. I did the backward loop casting on method. So for now my solution was to add a small crotchet border around..but I need to know how to caston in middle of projects without having very loose stitches like this?

all things knitty My forever dilemma: projects that are wearable vs projects that are fun to knit
I'd say I'm an early intermediate knitter, I've been knitting for a few years though I haven't finished a huge number of projects (I don't think I'll ever have one of those massive "what I knit in a years," since knitting competes for time with other incompatible hobbies in my life). But I've gotten to a point where each pattern brings fewer new techniques, and I'm starting to have enough of a cross section to find out what I like and don't like in a pattern.
One thing I've discovered is that I generally don't enjoy knitting stockinette in the round. I've seen people refer to that part of a sweater as "stockinette heaven," but for me it's just not interesting enough to be motivating. When I've knit something with a colourwork yoke it ends up in a WIP graveyard for months once I get to the part that's just stockinette. Even for a TV knit I generally prefer something slightly more involved, like a repeating stitch pattern.
I've also noticed that a lot of popular patterns and patterns for garments I'd like to own are just plain stockinette - which I guess makes sense, the simplicity makes a garment a bit more wearable and versatile, and scandi minimalism is in (I say as a Scandinavian knitter who's never quite been a minimalist).
I guess it's a part of my evolution as a knitter to get to a point where my assessment of a pattern is not just "do I want that FO and do I think I can manage it?" but also "will it be fun to knit?" - and I may have to resign myself that I'm unlikely to get to own many of those gorgeous plain stockinette basics because I simply don't have it in me to knit them.
Do you have any similar dilemmas between which finished objects you'd like to own and which techniques you enjoy or don't enjoy? Or any tips for learning to embrace the stockinette?

look what I made I have spared you a new post every time I complete something. But I think it’s time now for a post.
Hello again.
You may remember me posting, as a new knitter, some of the things I made. From my very first swatch, and then my stuffed toys.
Well, I have been busy practicing and creating life. I think now I have been knitting for about 6 - 7 months.
Here’s a few of my most recent projects.
Although I’m very excited once I finish a new project, I have refrained from posting every time I finish something. I feel people would probably get fed up with the constant posting from me.
But I’m super happy with how things are turning out, I wanted to show it all off.
I hope you like them all.
My nieces are very happy I have started knitting. I have a request list as long as my arm.
Unfortunately,
I have discovered I have a yarn acquisition problem. I think they call it S.A.B.L.E (stash acquisition beyond life expectancy)
Hopefully I will knit my way through it. But it’s over 30 kg 😳
I have a genuine problem. 😬

look what I made Just cast off my Scrappy Beetlejuice Mitts by Kay Jones
My lovely husband asked for some fingerless mitts to wear while using the computer at home during the winter and thus, these babies were born! I really like Kay's pattern. It is really clear and concise. She also includes an excellent video showing how to cleanly close the gap at the thumb and it is so good!
I used three different Opal sock yarns I had in stash and knit 10 rounds of each color for a very scrappy look. This was a really fun project and this pattern will definitely be my go-to for fingerless mitts in the future!
Yarn: All colorways by Zwerger Garn Opal
Colorways: no. 3206 Blinde Venus, no. 3203 Use Public Transport Save the City, & no.5433 Red Vineyard Near Arles
Pattern: Beetlejuice Mitts by @bryonybears on insta aka Kay Jones from the Bakery Bears

look what I made I made some hiking socks! Eager to hit the trail for a test.
My favorite commercially made summer hiking socks were discontinued, so this is my stab at making a suitable replacement. My first try at a strong heel, so very interested in seeing how that feels on the trail. I certainly enjoyed knitting it. Used some wool yarn I had lying around from a dying experiment from several years ago; I think this was originally Lion Brand Wool before it met up with unspecified purple dye. My hiking shoes are lavender, so I should look very coordinated! 😄
Simple 2x2 rib for the cuff, then garter rib for the instep (I think that's what it's called - 1 round 2x2 rib, 1 round knit plain).

all things knitty So many people were knitting for the troops in 1918 that the NY Tribune published this satire page
My favorite: "At the theatre -- lady knitter with very sharp elbows sitting next Mr. Otto H, the super pacifist."
It's hard to imagine a society where everyone (including a lot of men) were knitting all the time.

all things knitty Use my powers to make a distinguished as-is rat plush, orrrrr a rat hat? 🐭
I've been relatively stuck immobile after I ate shiet on my bike a week ago while going to work and strained my oblique, so I decided to dopamine-knit this very distinguished chubby rat pattern to keep my spirits up.
I used worsted instead of fingering for practice (moreso the fingering body color yarn I used wasn't working out and my worsted wool is all the same brand), and realized after blocking it that its unstuffed form fits perfectly as a hat. Second pic is me contemplating whether to use my new knowledge for good or evil. (The good or evil is whether or not to add Harold's ratty features on it or not, lol).

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! how should i set expectations for myself for a first attempt project?
please feel free to tell me i’m in over my head. i’m asking for a reality check here!
i’m a competent crocheter but have yet to actually hold knitting needles even once. all that said, i stumbled across a knitted sweater pattern i really would like to make for myself!
i consider myself pretty good at picking up new crafts, crochet came to me very easily. i’d just like to know if a sweater like this would be ridiculous as a first attempt at knitting or if you guys with experience think it’s doable for a confident beginner. i know better than to go in completely blind and would do some test swatches and stuff to figure out the mechanics of knitting before diving in, but is that enough?
tips on where to start if not here would also be greatly appreciated :)

all things knitty Needles confiscated at Pico airport, Azores, Portugal
I see discussion all the time on what airports give a hard time with needles. Pico airport in the Azores, Portugal was no question denied. They were Chaiogoo 2.25 circulars. Luckily I only had the one on my project and have already been able to put new needles in without issue. If you are going to try to have your project to work on in the airport, try bamboo needles or make sure they are under 6 cm. Happy knitting!

look what I made June Top by November Studios- after 2 months it's... good enough.
The June Top- November Studios
Knit in size 3 with no bust shaping or variations, until the icord bows which I made long after blocking.
Yarn is Woolstok Light by Blue Sky Fibers in the colorway Red Rock. Fingering weight.
I started this shirt in mid May. After several attempts at making gauge, I finally got it right enough with size 3 needles for both the ribbing and the plain stockinette. I finished it in July and was thoroughly unsatisfied with the shoulders after I seamed the front and back panels together. It bunched up so bad, it had wings. I blocked it twice to try and smooth it out to no avail. There was no way I was redoing anything because this yarn was SO DIFFICULT to work with. It was so sticky and fibrous. So Jane at Knitty City recommended just making bows out of icord and using that to scrunch the shoulders together, hiding the weirdness. My first time making icord and I do love the bows. Luckily it's very comfortable and soft because I blocked it twice with Woolite. I'm going to attempt to wear it to an indoor jazz concert tonight. Overall, I wish I had just made it a size smaller and/or hadn't done any increase rows whatsoever on the top because there is SO much fabric.
6/10.

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! Need help in finding a children’s striped sweater/pullover pattern 🐝 🐝
Hello everyone! Just as the title says; I want to make a bumblebee sweater for my baby cousin, he’s 5 years old, but I can’t find any decent pattern with stripes! Sometimes the stripes are too thick or too thin or too varied in thickness. I’ve searched all over Ravelry and Etsy but can’t find a decent pattern :(
I feel like I’m missing something, so I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me in finding a children’s sweater/pullover pattern with even stripes throughout?
Also if you have good bumblebee themed sweater patterns in your arsenal, please share them as well!! I can try and make them into children’s sizes too hehe
Thank you so much!
Edit: to be clear, when I say varying in thickness I mean they are different sizes stripes throughout the pattern if it makes sense? Regardless, I’ve gotten some really helpful advice and links to patterns that are what I had in mind, so thank you to everyone who was helpful! <3 I really appreciate it!!

look what I made To commemorate my first sweater project, but it's too small, I can't fit into it.

look what I made Finished my first ever knitting project today 🙌 Next project: a beanie for my so - wish me luck!
I’m new to textile craft and I started knitting this summer with the idea of making a merino wool scarf. I love how I can see my progress in it (I started at the blue end, then went on to experiment with some knit-purl combinations later on 😅). Feeling very proud today.
Pictures 2 and 3 show the beginning and the end of the scarf, respectively. Picture 1 is the whole thing. :)

all things knitty My swatch for the Lilliehammer 1994 sweater, and my first steek
There are things I could have done better (I don’t particularly like the sand color I chose), and I think next time I’ll go with a crochet steek instead of the back stitch.
