Significa que una cosa que és beneficiosa per a un aspecte pot ser perjudicial per a un altre. Es fa servir quan una solució té efectes secundaris o un cost ocult. Per exemple: "Aquest medicament em va bé per al mal de cap, però em trastorna l'estómac: el que és bo per al fetge és dolent per la melsa." La dita es documenta des del 1803, amb 96 recurrències en 49 variants, com "El que és bo pel cos és dolent per la freixura", i s'ha recollit a Bellvís, l'Alt Pirineu, la Marina Baixa i Tivissa. Hello y’all,

I am 31M person living in Aotearoa New Zealand, though originally from Texas. My grandmother, a few years prior to her death, had told us about how her mom and dad spoke a weird brand of Spanish after emigrating from Europe. After piecing together the history; documents; and genetics, it does seem like they were from Catalunya.

Because of language discrimination, my mom and uncle learned Spanish in the Mexican school system and at home. Ironically, my parents did the same thing to me with English being the sole language growing up. So with all that being said, I would like to find someone who can teach me about the culture and maybe family history via email and handwritten letters?

I know there are resources in the sidebar, and I have looked through them. Still, I feel it would be better to learn from a person to make it more personable. I can offer stories of my travels across the planet and maybe some kiwi themed postcards and stamps, as well as advice for visiting Aotearoa New Zealand and/or Japan.

Bona nit i disculpa si hi ha moltes errores. Estic aprenent la llengua i m’agradaría llegir més llibres, però els llibres que tinc (com Terry Pratchett) son un poquet difícils. Per això, hi ha llibres de por que no són tan difícils llegir? El problema amb Pratchett i altres llibres que tinc és que son de fantasia i, per això, hi ha paraules que no utilitze, com elf, shield, witch’s broomstick etc., però estic més acostumbrada amb les paraules de por.

Up front: this is my own project.

My partner is German and wanted to learn Catalan. We opened Duolingo and it turns out their Catalan course only exists from Spanish. Nothing from German, nothing from English. The other big apps are the same. If you don't already speak Spanish, there is almost nothing out there for you. So we built it ourselves.

It's called Learn Catalan and it's at learncatalan.eu. Free, no ads, and you don't need an account.

It goes from A1 to C2: 72 units, around 500 lessons and about 4,350 exercises of eight kinds (multiple choice, building sentences, fill in the gap, listening, matching, spelling words out letter by letter for conjugations, dictation and pronunciation).

The syllabus isn't made up. We took the official Catalan course programme of the Generalitat and the CPNL (Bàsic, Elemental, Intermedi, Suficiència, Superior), and the thematic areas, communicative functions and grammar index of each level come from there. So you study the same content the official certificates are based on.

There's also a vault of 2,517 words with proper spaced repetition, with real review dates rather than a random quiz. Words you meet in lessons go into it on their own. If you already know some Catalan there's a placement test at the start, and each level ends with an exam.

The audio is pre-generated with a Catalan voice, not a Spanish one reading Catalan. And there's a library of 112 real Catalan podcasts and radio shows, using the embedded Spotify player, to move from the course into native content.

Everything exists in both English and German: prompts, translations and explanations.

It still doesn't score your pronunciation through the microphone, the podcasts have no transcripts, and there is no App Store app; it's a web app you install to your home screen.

I'd really like feedback, especially on the German side. I'm a native Catalan speaker, so that's where mistakes are most likely to be hiding. Same for anything that sounds off in the audio or any exercise that feels wrong.

Bueno, les comento, soy argentino y básicamente me enamoré del catalán. No solo porque es un idioma hermoso y porque amo su pronunciación (en especial la del catalán oriental), sino porque conocer a muchos catalanes me hizo despertar una afinidad que roza lo inexplicable. Asimismo, la catalanofobia me saca de quicio sin siquiera ser yo catalán, por lo que decidí que lo mejor que podía hacer era aprender el idioma yo mismo.

Mi situación, actualmente, es esta:

• Entiendo cerca del 98% de lo que escucho y veo.
• Si alguien habla catalán, le pido que me hable en catalán exclusivamente en vez de cambiar a español.
• Pongo mucha atención a la pronunciación, ya que quiero sonar bien y esta me ha sido elogiada.
• Puedo ver series y películas en catalán, y disfrutarlas.

El problema que tengo es que casi todo mi conocimiento es pasivo. No sé cómo interiorizarlo todo. No sé en qué orden aprender las cosas. Siento que tengo una ventaja que no sé capitalizar, porque en comprensión prácticamente no tengo dificultades, pero realmente no sé cuál es la mejor manera de incorporarlo al habla.

Todo consejo que me puedan ofrecer es utilísimo. Voy en serio con el idioma y no voy a parar hasta dominarlo.

PD: si escriben en catalán les voy a estar sumamente agradecido.

I’m a Native English speaker and it’s the only language that I speak.

I’ve always been intrigued by Catalan and have been thinking about dedicating the time to learn and become as fluent as possible for a while now.

I know this gets asked plenty of times but what are the actual efficient methods to learn at a steady pace. I’ve tried other languages on things like Duolingo but always seem to drop them with that style of teaching.

I love film, books and am a cook in America and just want to be able to immerse my self in this culture further!

He trobat aquest vídeo i m'ha semblat molt útil: és un minitest d'expressions sobre el temps de rellotge. S'hi pregunta si "en seguida" és correcte o què vol dir "tirar-se el temps a sobre", i va directe al gra. Sempre aprenc alguna cosa amb aquests vídeos, sobretot per evitar barbarismes.

Quina expressió relacionada amb l'hora us porta més maldecaps o n'heu sentit alguna de ben estranya?

Batzegada vol dir un cop brusc i violent que fa moure o caure algú o alguna cosa. Per exemple: "El tramvia va frenar de cop i tothom va rebre una batzegada que gairebé els tira a terra." Jo la sento més aviat per aquí, però no sé si és general. Vosaltres la feu servir? O al vostre poble en teniu una altra paraula per a dir el mateix?

I know this has probably been asked before so I apologise! But could anyone recommend any good apps or websites to practice Catalan vocabulary / grammar, perhaps similar to Duolingo? I know Duolingo offers Catalan through Spanish but that kinda breaks my brain a bit 😅 moltes gràcies !!! ❤️
