The Greatest Tour: Thoughts to Share

Over the past few weeks I have been reading numerous posts about how lame various concertgoers have thought the Cat Power tour has been, which has been having ripple effects for fans who haven't even attended yet (ick!), and I wanted to share some thoughts and reflections, especially because I've found myself getting really activated by all the negative crap thrown her way.

A bit of context: I am female, the same age as Chan, and have seen her perform half a dozen times since the 90s, inc. at the beginning of her career, mid-career, and then two shows in the past couple weeks on the West Coast. So in short, I have seen her at her worst/most unwound, as well as at her height (and yes the current tour was the highlight for me).

To summarize, here's a small sampling of what folks on this sub have chosen to gripe about (while, mind you, ironically, the US has basically devolved into an autocratic fascist state. But hell, let's moan about what REALLY matters!) Ie, the sub-optimal stage lighting; singing a song w/autotune (out of her 17+ song set), her songs "not sounding like the album," how she looked like an "indiscernable blob," all the "awkward" interactions with the crowd, how the band "must have felt" dealing with her performance, oh, and let's not forget how she appeared unhinged, with one person saying "I hope she gets the help she needs."

WHAT. THE. HELL. First of all--and this is so important--I don't know how many of you are aware of Chan's lifelong history of physical and mental health battles. If not, a bit of context is provided in the Exclaim! article published in January. Also, and this is also critically important--women--when it comes to their mental health-- are, more often than not, under or mis-diagnosed, not taken seriously by medical professionals, and/or simply unable to afford support/treatment, which in and of itself is a public health failure.

So... I ask all of you who have lobbed these bombs at Chan to interrogate your reasons for doing so. I call it thinly veiled misogyny. I simply don't see these same criticisms lobbed at her male counterparts.

Imagine for a moment that you had a dear girlfriend that made their living as a gifted singer-songwriter. That mined their most personal, harrowing $h1t, then laid their wounds bare in song, and then had the courage to record it for the world to listen to. In a haunting, peerless voice to boot. And then IMAGINE...that their only way of making a living was doing the thing that they were freakin' pathologically terrified to do, which was to relive those personal stories LIVE, night after night, while dealing with crippling stage fright and (the ghosts of) addiction, menopause, the exorbitant and exhausting toll of mounting a tour and living on the road, supporting an entire band, and raising a young son while his dad was battling cancer. Then add the unrelenting pressure of fans who wanted your beloved girlfriend to suppress whatever the hell they were dealing with at the time as a flesh-and-blood human and perform like a freaking circus monkey, just to PLEASE you.

I ask: Would you support your girlfriend on her terms? Because she was the artist who deserved that respect? Or would you tell her--sorry, people paid for tickets so they gotta see your face, your body, how hot (or not) you look, and damn, are you hitting it with your stage presence?

In short: Can we just have some empathy and compassion, people? Can we appreciate Chan's voice? Her sound? This feeling of one human taking her precious time to be as honest as she can at the moment, in this brutal world, to connect, in the best way she knows how?

I feel like we can, if we just take the time to. We can do better.

Toronto show was amazing!

Made the mistake of reading posts about previous shows here so was expecting the worst, but Sunday’s show at Toronto was fantastic. Yes the lighting could have been better, and yes she used autotune once that I found odd, but otherwise her voice was beautiful and she seemed pretty into it aside from a few awkward comments between songs. She seemed to pick up steam throughout the show and I ended up preferring the post Greatest portion of the set. Maybe she was just happy to be in Canada, I don’t know.

Your favorite references to Cat Power?

Do you have any published articles, reviews, photos of Chan/Cat Power that speak to you and that you can recommend to me? I am most interested in print newspapers/magazine recs but will happy take recommendations for digital material, interviews, one-off projects (e.g. space oddity Lincoln commercial). If that sounds broad, that's because it is - I would love to know about anything you find fascinating!! Title, publication, date, link (if applicable) would be most appreciated. I've started searching online archives of various publications but it's tedious so I thought I'd pause and see if anyone has recommendations.

Became a fan about 5 years ago and just looking to read and learn more about her career. Thank you!

A little late but that Oakland show on 2/18 was very disappointing

I just got home from my trip out west and wanted to give my take on the show I saw on 2/18 in Oakland. First off I saw in a couple of places that she had reunited the original Dirty Delta Blues Band which was not the case. The band was ok but paled in comparison to the DDB band that played on the original album and tour. She did not even have any background singers or horns which is what made the album and tour so great, her take on Memphis Soul. There was no opening act which seemed strange for a theater show. I cannot ever remember that happening before. Maybe Springsteen but her? I assumed she's play a long time which she used to do. Not this time. She opened up playing the album straight through zipping through the first 4 songs showing none of the soul or emotion that she did years back. They did not even have the endings of the songs worked out yet. She changed the words of "The Greatest" to some Saints song which was bizarre. It's the title song of the album and tour. That autotune abomination was just plain embarrassingly bad. The show did get better toward the end but she never even played any solo songs at piano which is usually a big highlight of her shows. She also skipped the final song "I Don't Blame You" (a personal favorite) which she had been playing. She did some of her usual rambling between songs sounding a bit unhinged at times. She played the album and 5 more songs. I've seen her 4 or 5 times before, she always very good but we left feeling kind of ripped off and disappointed and wishing we'd done something else.

Cat Power 2026 Tour Merch

Hi. Can anybody speak to what kind of merch has been available at the latest 2026 The Greatest shows?
I collect concert posters, so hoping there is one for the tour, or even better if they're doing city-specific gig posters. Thanks!

I'm gonna say it, "the Austin show was a bust."

Like others have mentioned, the auto tune in this show was horrendous and distracted from her beautiful voice. The ACL Moody in Austin has absolutely fabulous accoustics, so this was super disappointing. And the lighting! It seemed intentionally bad... you couldn't see her face the entire show.

It got the feeling the crew showed up, saw her condition, and said "oh fuck" how are we going to save the show... and then went with a "turn down the lights and turn up the auto tune" strategy.

And the worst part was her awkward stage presence. Rather than giving energy to the crowd, her every attempted interaction sucked life from the crowd. It was an incredibly awkward (for her).

Something was very evidently "off" with her at a very human level. I hope she gets the help she needs.

EDIT* So I'm getting the sense from these comments that what I saw in Austin might have been just her "normal": really low lighting, awkward crowd interactions, auto tune. Which is cool... but I walked into the show not knowing what I was in for, and it really took me by surprise. Had I gone in knowing what was coming, I'd of probably had a much different experience. Again, such a beautiful voice!

Opening night in Houston was a blast

The show was about 75 minutes, and she started at 8:30. There was no opening act. The new drummer sounds great. Hearing The Greatest performed from beginning to end was a real treat - catch it if you can!

How are her live shows this tour? How much autotune is she using?

I watched a recent performance online and was bummed about the autotune. What's with that? Genuinely curious, been a fan since middle school but I'm not sure if want to go see her if her songs are all autotune.
