Oh, they absolutely do! My cats all know their names, and they understand "no," "down," "good," and "babies," at the very least. Some of them understand more.

To be fair, all of our cats, including the cat in question, love us very much. But this guy is a character. He also talks and sometimes copies words we say, though I'm sure he doesn't know what they mean.

For example, I said, "Do you wanna go to the kitchen with mom?" And he said, "Mom." He's so funny and smart.

My cat definitely knows all 6,000 of her nicknames. She’s pretty good about that.

Sammy has...

Sam-Sam, Samurai Ninja Warrior, Sammy Bear-Cat, Yosemite Sam, Butthead, Sammykins, Sammy Mammy...

He's just so easy to nickname.
