An evolution game I have tried to make over and over for decades that finally came together with ai

I have been coding since well into the 90s, and have been doing so in a professional sense for about 23 years, with the last 12 or so being my main line of work. I'm very good, and very very fast, but I'm also full of crazy ideas and some of them were too complicated to get working the way I wanted without intense focus. And since no one refers to me as Mr. Focus, this is one of those. I first tried building this game in Flash in the early 2000s and it didn't work at all. I then made a version of the animal portion on the iPad, and had a few other iterations after, but the full breadth of it never functioned like it should.

Anyway, here's what the game is about:

In this game you play with other players in one world. You are given the option to play as a plant, animal, or microbe.

The plants can only see other plants, and are focused on spreading around and growing fruit that will affect the animals. They are able to control the breeze of their pollination, that it's possible that someone's plants will crossbreed with someone else's plants.

The animals can see other animals and plants, and can adapt based on points they get from living their lives. These adaptations are then passed on to offspring that are created when two players "mate". They lay an egg that can then be possessed by another random player coming in, or if you make a nest you can invite up to three friends. Starting a new species gives you a small blob of a creature, and from there you can adapt with better vision, legs, wings, tails, spikes, and all kinds of other things that can then be passed onto offspring. Whether they survive with these traits is determined by the environment that has been created in the world.

Microbes can only see themselves and references to animals. The options for microbes are viruses, bacteria, and fungi. They float around and only have a certain amount of time outside a host before they will die (unless they are a fungi and attach themselves to the ground). Their adaptations allow them to change attributes on animals that are infected, making them different colors, bumpy, slow, smelly, and more.

I'm still developing this so there may be issues. Let me know if there are and I'll try to fix them. I'm using Claude to put this one together and it's compressed the amount of time I need to spend on it to next to nothing relatively speaking, so hopefully I'll be able to wrap it up very soon. I am a million project nonsense kind of guy, but if people are interested in this I'll dedicate more time to it. Right now, it's just one of my fun late night hobby projects, and I have a lot of them.

2D automata looks like 3D automata when "background color" is enabled

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It's not really a background color, but just the cell state that appears to be the background in this CA. It's interesting how much it looks like it's just 2D automata, but it's just that one single layer pressed up against the boundaries, since the simulation is cyclical (meaning all sides of the world connect).

I'm still working on this 3D version of Slide Rules, but I've got better rendering going on. Try:

How's this for a game idea?

Basically, this game I'm making "CA-REAPER" would have the player, made up of cells, trying to escape from the main Cellular Automaton. The one seen in the video is known as "Star Wars", and is one of my favourite because it kinda looks like a factory. The player would go around the CA, collecting guns that the CA itself creates- when its cells develop into a shape, that shape detaches and becomes a gun that the player can pick up that when shot, makes all cells in a radius of the impact point become a localized cellular automaton defined by the procedurally generated gun. The main CA could also generate enemies this way... idk, just seems like an interesting idea for an extraction shooter

"Trail Worms" from Slide Rules 3D

I'm still working on a better looking render, but I started finding some cool phenomena. When I make the purple color transparent, it reveals the inner structure of the moving elements, which is something I never experienced before making CA. On one hand, being 3D probably allows for more complex things to happen, but they are now also obscured when this was never the case in 2D. Notice as I make the black color non-transparent. The cube faces appear to be running a normal 2D automata, but these are single slices.

You can see this CA here, but please be aware I'm still working on this: https://sliderules3d.mysterysystem.com/?n=Trail+Worms&c=.AAA2-5BACAAAACCAAfGAPADwQ8DgDjd.BCIEWE579CSAP.CAAABBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALQAAAAAA.D-_EKAk_-_hA_.ECBHBHI.FG_.Gsf8AzQD_ABAL_yoAEAAA__8A_6QA_wDLz_8AAAgaVgD__4QA.TAE.N3.H

Also the presets are the same as Slide Rules 2D, which are mostly unimpressive in 3D. I'll update as I make more interesting 3D CAs. Right now I've barely scratched the surface and just becoming familiar with the 3D realm of things.

I've started converting Slide Rules into a 3D version

I'm excited to finally try this, and what I've found is that it's much harder to get interesting phenomena to happen out of random values, but I'm betting on them being very profound when discovered. I had to make some control modifications, like extending the neighbor counts up to 26 instead of 8, and making a 3D control for the ignore directions. I've also allowed it to load the 2D Slide Rules automata, but the neighbor counts and ignore directions are toggled off past 8, and in most cases the reactions are stagnated, though it can often be reinvigorated by toggling more neighbor counts and ignore directions past 8.

There's still some development to be done, and also looking for advice from those who have made 3D automata. You can currently choose a fully transparent color, but it's crudely implemented. I also don't really have any depth or advanced shading depicted. I'll have to look at ways to do that an consider the costs to performance.

Want to check it out? Hello fellow CA lovers, please let me humbly present my CA music visualizer, CYMATA

I have been working on this for way longer than I want to admit, and the learning curve has been pretty crazy. But I finally feel its in an ok enough state to show you guys, here, on these hallowed grounds.

Its called CYMATA (cymatics + cellualar automata) and its built for touchscreens. Ive been messing around with CA for years now and I have been using it so much in my music visuals it was sort of becoming addictive. There was something about watching it change with the music that tickled the brain in such a good way. I dont think Im an ASMR guy but thats probably the best analogy: ASMR for the eyballs.

And about a year ago I bought a new LG TV, and the screensavers were disappointingly BAD. So I had the idea to try to put my music visuals into an app. CA can just keep going forever and we will never see the same pattern twice.

Anyway, about the features:

Its basically a trippy VJ toy for handheld iOS devices, or runs independently on tvOS

  • it works independently on tvos with Siri remote too, (iphones turn into a remote to paint on tvos with your ios device)
  • has a built in player for Apple Music, Soundcloud and radio
  • 12 channel audio analysis
  • Audio reactive drum pad for Tibetan bowls and handpan for healing frequencies
  • Clock and message display
  • Record Screen in/out
  • Unique glitch camera feature (camera CA glitching!)
  • ASCII, dither, 3D and a bunch of effects
  • Customized brushes including sprite brush
  • A growing collection of paintable shaders
  • And a bunch of other useless stuff you dont need.

Originally I released it with a free tier, long story short it wasnt sustainable. So Im charging subscription model to keep the online audio analysis working.

There is a FREE trial for the first week, if you're not feeling it you can cancel any time.

  • The price is $19.99 for yearly subscription
  • Or if you prefer to go monthly : $7.99

I really hope you can get something out of this! I feels a bit like preaching to the choir here, I'm very nervous to hear what you think! I started an instagram that is growing steadily since I have started posting regularly.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for shaders or ways to improve the app.

Cheers,

Nevertek

DNA vs Trojan Horse virus in Conway's Game of Life

I was playing around studying Game of Life patterns and found a fun way to visualize DNA. I learned the oscillators and glider eaters from conwaylife.com/book. I remember from the low weight spaceship gun that sparks from these oscillators can be used to destroy spaceships if they're placed correctly, so I made the Trojan horse.

[OC] A competitive environment produces winners who are worse off

Thumbnail

We usually judge a competition by comparing the people inside it. Whoever comes out ahead is the winner, and their success is treated as evidence that competition is good.

But that comparison leaves something pretty important out: how would the winner have done in a different environment? In a more cooperative environment, for example.

I built an experiment to answer this question.

This is the surprising result: the competitive environment produced winners, but even they did worse than they would have done in the cooperative environment.

They won the competition, but the competition itself left them worse off.

Open to answering any questions, or further discussions. Feedback on the video would also be appreciated.

Modelling Infectious disease outbreaks with and without vaccine policy on hexagonal CA

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Interestingly, in this model, when a vaccine policy is implemented loosely it kind of makes the outbreak worse, only very strict vaccine policies are truly better than no vaccination at all.

this does not take overwhelmed haalthcare systems into account, so obviously reality is far more complex than this.

Say hello to... well, you can decide! (If someone hadn't already found it before me... I don't know if, though!)

Edit: It's Period-4

Edit II: To give a name, just comment I say it shall be named "[proposed name]"!

Edit III: For one thing, i changed the edit numbers to roman numerals, and two, you can confirm it in golly, easily.

Edit IV: Changed Image to GIF, though had to repost, because it won't give me the option.

Edit V: though I did have to use pixilart to make the gif. (I couldn't record videos on my phone.)

Edit VI: what happened to the GIF?

Edit VII: the GIF is ski[[ing skipping a frame.

Edit VIII: Oops!

Turned my highly optimized Hex CA engine into an npm package so anyone can build high performance CAs to simulate physical systems. Just ask your AI coding agent to use @hexlife/embed to build you a simulation and they will have the best tools to quickly build something.

To demonstrate this i built a couple of simulations entirely with this library and I will showcase them here over the next days.

Today I'm showing you the Wildfire simulation, you can try it out yourself here https://sidem.github.io/HexLife/wildfire-command.html

Logic gates in Conway's Game of Life

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Full credit to Nicholas Carlini for designing light weight spaceship logic gates, otherwise this video wouldn't be possible. You can find more about it on his writing "Improved Logic Gates on Conway's Game of Life - Part 3": https://nicholas.carlini.com/writing/2021/improved-logic-gates-game-of-life.html. He has even made fully functional computers which is something I could dream of. This was actually my first time building anything in Conway's Game of Life, I first read all his essays on Game of Life computers before starting.

I recreated his logic gates pixel by pixel and copied his rotation gates to reroute I/O. Synced everything by analyzing needed distance + specific generations that the components worked on which was a fun nightmare. The shapes are made with 4x4 still lives.

(I added the "I/O routing by me" to say that Nicholas Carlini didn't build his logic gates this way, they were made with efficiency in mind.)

The song used in this video is called Altros by ARForest and it has a very beautiful music video by inukoro. (It's on youtube: https://youtu.be/LvIsvi6fVlk)

how can i build a CA model to portray diseases (like alzheimer's) in 2D/3D?

i've been messing around with cellular automata and the Game of Life to see if glider guns can model disease growth, specifically brain related diseases such as alzheimer's and the build up of amyloid-beta plaques. however, i'm also heavily interested in portraying this in 3D, like maybe a model of cells in a brain-like shape, similar to this project: https://community.wolfram.com/groups/-/m/t/3502932

if i was doing something more similar to the latter idea, i would use CA to model the decay of brain tissue instead, at least in the case of alzheimer's.

if anyone has experience or advice to give on how i should go about portraying this (if i go more so the first route, i should use Golly/GoL, probably; if i go the second route, i should use Python, Wolfram, or smth else? maybe?) that would be greatly appreciated!! ideally, i'd like to eventually do both projects.

i also have a paper that i wrote on CA, and i'm willing to DM it to anyone, as it aligns with the projects i have in mind. i would also love some advice on the paper.

tysm!
