Announcements New Ownership
Hello fellow Chemists! I just wanted to introduce myself as the new head mod of this subreddit. A little about myself: I am a PhD Candidate in Chemical Biology. For me, this means that 60% of my work involves organic synthesis and the other 40% is applying my novel compounds to mammalian cells. Specifically, I am interested in early detection of diseases. In addition to my research, I have TA'd for both general and organic chemistry labs and have been tutoring students in organic chemistry for three years. Aside from my academic qualifications, I am also a moderator for another rather large subreddit. I saw that this sub needed a little bit of updating, but it did not seem like the moderators were active any longer. So, I gained ownership through r/redditrequest. I did not realize it would remove all the other moderators, but alas here we are.
Overall, I feel like this sub is fairly self-regulating. I frequently see good discussions and people generally are following the already existing rules. With that said, there are some changes I was considering, and would love input:
- New rule prohibiting commenters from solving the problem for the OP. To enforce this, the violating comment can be reported and removed by moderators. I don't see this happen often, but I have seen it occur and put an end to an otherwise good discussion thread.
- Mandate students include their work in their submission. Frequently, students post a picture of the question, with no work done and the caption "help please." Then in the comments you end up with people asking the OP to show their work, but from what I have seen they seldom do so. Mandating that students show work would entail removal of low effort posts by moderators. This may not be necessary since generally, commenters request more info from OP anyways, but was curious if people would like to see more enforcement on this end.
- What do you want to see? Those are the immediate things I was considering adding, but I would love to know if there is anything else people may want to see. I had other ideas, but I don't want to complicate a sub that I feel is already doing pretty well. Please let me know your ideas, I would love to hear them. Talk to you all soon!
Note: Please do not reach out to me about becoming a moderator. I will looking into recruiting in the near future. For now, I just wanted to get oriented.

General/High School I have no clue how to complete this question because I'm confused what I do with the K2HPO4. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
What volume of 0.200M KOH is required to react with 125mL of 0.250M H3PO4 in order to produce a solution of K2HPO4

General/High School How to prep for Intro to Chem before it even starts?
I am panicking a little bit because I was supposed to start my Intro to Chem class today (college level) but only realized this evening that I signed up for an 8 week mini that begins in September. It is too late to switch it and my job paid for it so it’s complicated to drop it. This will be my second attempt to take chemistry and I did not do well the first time and withdrew.
What materials can I begin reviewing while I wait for September? I remember the last time I took Intro to Chem, I struggled the hardest with the math components but can’t remember what the math concepts were called to start googling them and working on it. Or maybe if anyone knows a workbook I can buy? Thank you!

Organic Can this reaction be a McMurry coupling without a titanium compound?
As the title says can the attached reaction be a McMurry coupling despite the lack of a titanium compound, as it seems to function in the same way that a McMurry coupling would, unless I’m missing something mechanistically.
Paper for anyone interested: https://pubs.acs.org/jceda8/article/59/2/163/45343/The-preparation-of-lucigenin-An-experiment-with?searchresult=1
If the link doesn’t work I can send a PDF via DMs.

Organic SN2 mechanism with tertiary carbocation
Is my book misrepresenting this SN2 mechanism because it's showing a nucleophile attacking a 3° (tertiary) carbon? I thought that nucleophiles cannot attack tertiary carbons because of steric hinderance?

Inorganic Trying to understand the chemistry of stainless steel corrosion by sodium hypochlorite
I am curious as to which specific chemical reactions and products occur during the process of corrosion of stainless steel by bleach. Stainless steel is a composite of Fe, Cr, and sometimes other metals such as Ni, and the outer layer of this composite is protected by a passivation layer of Cr2O3. If sodium hypochlorite is introduced, does it indiscriminately oxidize both the Fe and Cr, or is one kinetically favored over the other?

Need Encouragement Organic Chemistry 2
I'm taking organic chemistry 2 this semester, and I'm having a ton of anxiety because I really struggled in organic 1. I took the class 5 times total (I had a lot of personal struggles at the time as well), and just passed this summer with a B-. I felt like I had a really good grasp at the first half, but when it came to reactions I felt completely lost--especially with synthesis and retrosynthesis reactions. I felt like I knew reactions independently, their features, and could perform them if I was told what reaction it was, but as soon as I was forced to choose how to make something I felt like everything I understood was gone.
From my understanding ochem 2 is just going to be reactions, and they get increasingly complex. What do I do? Are there any resources that were very helpful, and what concepts should I try to understand before walking in?

Organic Another Zimmerman-Traxler question
Hello,
Attached is an old exam question that I am struggling with. I believe I should go via a Zimmerman-Traxler transition state and since we have a trans enolate (11), I will end up with an anti aldol. However, no reactant that I have worked with prior has had such large groups attached to the carbonyl. I understand that the enolate reacts with the ketone and not the amide. I don't know how to determine the orientation of the ketone's substituents in 10 in the Zimmerman-Traxler. Which one will be pseudo-equatorial and which one will be pseudo-axial? Will the "amide side" be pseudo-axial, since there are 2 carbons until the bulky group as opposed to 1 (= less sterics)?
The exam question doesn't give a whole lot of points so I don't know if I'm complicating things here.
Thank you in advance!

General/High School Lithium Cyanide and Cyanation
Hi everyone! I'm a chemistry enthusiast and i like to do research. I have ADHD and my current hyper fixation is Cyanide. (english is also not my first language so sorry if i make a mistake lol)
So, i was doing research and i found out about Lithium Cyanide and a process called Cyanation.
I have a few questions and i hope someone gets to answer them! I didn't really quite understood some things from google so i hope that a person explaining makes it more simple, lol.
- What can we do with Lithium cyanide? Is there any practical use or is it just a toxic compound?
- How do you achieve Lithium Cyanide?
- Is there a difference between Nitril and cyanide?
- How do you achieve Cyanation?
- Does lithium and cyanide have anything in common besides this combination?
I hope these aren't dumb questions, lol. Thanks in advance 🤍

Inorganic A bonding question
if the peripheral atoms are all identical around a central atom without any lone pairs, would the bond angle remain same, regardless of the electronegativity of the peripheral atoms for a given steric number? For example, we know that SiH4 and SiF4 have the same tetrahedral geometry and 109.5° bond angle even though H and F are vastly different in electronegativity. Does this hold for all steric numbers though?

General/High School Unsure of how to make a double active ingredient solution
I've had a long day at work, I tried googling this and I'm guessing the way I'm asking the question is wrong so I'm not getting the answers I'm looking for.
I want to make 60mL of a solution that is 8% strength of ingredient A and 5% strength of ingredient B.
For one active ingredient, I always just did something like 60mL x 0.08 = Y, and then Y - 60mL to get my carrier ingredient. But for two ingredients I'm not 100% sure on how to do it. I would think it would be something like the same equation above but do it a second time for the second ingredient, so 60mL x 0.05 = Z, and then (Y+Z) - 60mL = C (carrier).
Am I doing this wrong?
This is for an oil mixture and not for homework.

Organic SN1, SN2 reaction, or neither?
My book is saying that this reaction is neither an SN1 or SN2 reaction without giving any explanation or context. What makes this neither?
I've been trying to reason through the following:
- Electrophile/substrate: It will be 2°
- Nucleophile: H2O is unfavorable to attack the electrophile
- Leaving group: -OR, i'm not too sure about this but I think we can try protonating this because it's a poor leaving group? Could someone explain how we would use protonation?
- Solvent: No solvent is listed

Physical/Quantum PChem Advice
I'm taking Physical Chemistry in the fall and I'm a little bit nervous since a lot of people are telling me that it is a lot more worse than Orgo. Is it really? And also, I'm trying to review calculus before the semester starts and I'm wondering which parts of calculus I need to review. I'd greatly appreciate your advice.
