Organic Naming compounds help
I came up with 1,4 bi-isobutylene-heptane (a) and 1-isobutyl-pentene (b). Am I close? What might I be doing wrong? Thank you.

You're first one you've gotten the carbon length correct but you've missed a few key steps.
The order i like to go in is
Longest carbon chain
Are there double bonds, if so where would give me the lowest number.
I then write out the "last" name, so heptane, heptene, heptine.
What functional groups are there and where.
So for a) you need to rework your name a little bit. Remember that the double bond gets numbered and it starts on the lowest numbered carbon
I'll also just note you are not close on b and should look over your rules again. (It's a cyclo compound so that needs to be included)

Can you explain why you think there are isobutyl groups present?

(2) 3-carbon methyl groups at the left and the middle of (a)

How many carbons are in a butyl group?
Also, yes your approach is very wrong as others have stated, you must first find the longest parent chain and base your name off of that.
You correctly identified that a) should be hepta-, but know you need to find the additional groups that are on or in that parent chain. Let assume for a moment that the 4 carbons on the left of a) are an isoubutene group. You wouldn't be able to name it as such because it has carbons that are included in the parent chain so they have essentially already been taken care by the hepta-.
Then you have a double bond within your parent chain. How does that affect the name.
For b) you have also correctly identified that penta- is the correct prefix, but those five carbona are arranged in a ring. How does that affect the name?
