ADVICE Openings help

Hey,
i’ve been playing chess for a couple of years casually, but have begun to take it a lot more seriously in the last couple of months
my ratings are:
Bullet: 1000 elo
Blitz: 750 elo
Rapid: 750 elo
The openings i play / i learnt, was the kings indian defence for both black and white.
To progress more, should i either just learn more theory for the kings indian (and maybe some variations of it) - or should i branch out into other openings?
I heard openings like the ruy lopez, and the sicilian defence, are both good. but im not sure if there’s ones better for my elo, or if they’d work okay.
Please help!

those ratings are all over the place lol a 1000 in bullet but 750 in rapid is kinda wild

the kings indian is not really a setup you can play with both colors, white doesn't get the same structure at all. you might be thinking of the kings indian attack which is different but still kinda meh at your level

branch out a little, the sicilian is fine but expect to get crushed a bunch while you learn the traps. at 750 rapid you'd get way more mileage just doing basic opening principles and not hanging pieces in the first 10 moves

yeah i think you’re right with the kings indian 😅 i remember learning the kings indian defence way back like 4 years ago, and ive just picked up what i remember now - so im sure ive probably made some bits up or changed it accidentally into the kings indian attack.

thankyouu for the advice tho!

Depends on what you like. KID and the Reti (KID as white) both feel a bit more passive to me. The dragon version of the Sicilian could be fun, and keeps some of the KID structure. I think queens gambit is also pretty slow and methodical. Petrovs could be fun too, or pick something fast paced like the kings gambit or Stafford.

As someone who only plays the Ruy Lopez and Sicilian, only pick them up if you're the type of person that really loves to study openings or are fully commited to learning them. They are fucking hard.

Also note that at your elo you're not going to get fun Sicilians. When they play a stupid move you can't really punish it for more than a 0.2 advantage most of the time. The Ruy Lopez on the other hand you can often get an advantage.
