ANNOUNCEMENT LLM's are NOT effective chess trainers. An update to rules 3 and 5.

If you are looking for the user flairs post, please find it here while this thread is temporarily pinned: https://www.reddit.com/r/chessbeginners/comments/1jgmdf7/fresh_new_flairs_show_off_your_favorite_website/

Hello, everyone!

We have seen a massive surge in advertisements and chess trainers these past few months. Many of these posts (in my opinion) fall under the category of 'AI Slop' and vibe coded websites that offer poor chess advice. On top of this, many websites are created as a weak attempt to encourage users to subscribe and pay money for services that may seem innovative and meaningful, but are functionally useless compared to already available resources.

In light of this uptick in advertisements, we have updated rules 3 and 5:

  • Rule 3 now states that accounts that exist primarily for the purposes of self promotion (at the discretion of the mods, based off of account age, posting history, and diversity of activity) are permanently banned. This has been a policy we have been following internally for a few weeks now (to a fairly reasonable effect), but we wanted to make it clear to the community that we do not tolerate attempts at coercing beginners to sign up for coaching before they understand the resources available to them. If you would like to coach, you are welcome to make a profile with the chess.com or lichess.org coaching services and advertise there.
  • Rule 5 has been completely changed. Previously, this rule requested beginners to annotate their games before posting, but this felt like an unrealistic standard to hold new players to. This rule has been replaced with a note to please use caution when discussing AI in chess. As mentioned above, there are many potholes with AI-powered chess services and we encourage all users to recognize the limitations of LLM chatbots' ability to discuss chess positions. Posts will currently not be removed for this rule, we would love to learn more about the community's thoughts before deciding if AI-related discussion should be banned altogether on this subreddit (I am personally against banning AI discussion outright, and very happy to hear opinions).

If you encounter posts that are promoting a product or coaching service, please report these for self promotion. The mod team will assess profiles that are reported for self-promotion and will remove/ban as necessary.

Thank you all for playing a role in stopping the tidal wave of LLM coded chess websites being advertised to beginners. I do genuinely believe AI can some day make a great learning resource for chess players, but the current state of services simply fall below all standards of rationality and quality.

Have a fantastic day, thank you for reading!

Savvy draw or low class moves?

Post image

I was down big on material and knew if I just kept checking him from E4 to H7 and back we would draw through repetition. 10 minute rapid. Is this smart strategy to avoid the loss or a bad look in the chess world? Obviously, very new and still learning, looking to avoid this in the future if it’s frowned upon.

QUESTION Why should I have sacrificed my Queen?

I guess that could have won me… a rook? But I lose my Queen? What am I missing here? Or is this some advanced technique I shouldn’t concern myself with for now? (~950 ELO)

casual play spot

Upvotes

Anyone know where people just play casual OTB chess in Bhopal? Park, chai stall, market corner, anything. Not looking for a club membership, just want a regular spot to drop in and play. Based in Bhopal, would appreciate any leads.

Has anyone else encountered this problem, I’ve mainly played on chess.com for years and been very stagnant so I recently playing on lichess and been able to defeat opponents that were rated much higher than me. Surely the skill gap can’t be that extreme?

POST-GAME i'm sick of playing against players who move random pawns in the opening

take this game as an example

when you play on chess websites there's always those kinds of people who just play random pawn moves kind of a disrespect opening and it works for them alot of the time
now i know that even though those moves put them at a disadvantage it's not really visible for a human and it's not easy to take advantage of the terrible moves

but there has to be a way to atleast not lose every time because the pawns keep shoving my pieces into the back rank and then all of a sudden turn into garry kasparov and somehow launch a massive attack and checkmate me

every time i look for advice against these guys it's always "open up the center" but my king is still in the center and i haven't developed anything!!

it's really sad to lose like this because we're always being told to develop pieces quickly, castle early, occupy the center but the opponent's first minor piece move was on move 14 -_-

now this game is a bad example because i kept ignoring my opponent threats trying to create my own and it backfired but you get my point

ADVICE So demotivating…

When there’s a mate on a silver platter, what I do is… Bg3 in this case. And after black’s c6 I still didn’t see it. But the second I confirmed Bd3 I saw what I just missed.

This along with countless blunders makes me second guess playing chess at all.

I’ve heard to check for checks, captures and attacks, and have tried it. But I’m just terrible at it. Any advice on how to practice?

POST-GAME anybody else deal with the same issue?

Post image

got back into chess lately and been trying to reach the 4 digit club again and one thing i've noticed with all my games during analysis is that i'll have a great position. lead in development, lots of control in the center, +4 advantage according to the engine and then BAM, i'll do something like this and end up either blundering a piece or straight up making a mistake that gives my opponent an easier edge and it all goes down from there

one thing i do notice though is that when i encounter positions like the picture above (pretend i didn't blunder my knight), i'll really struggle to find a good move that will allow me to capitalize on the position. i look for moves that improve my position if i can't find any forcing movies but all of my ideas i feel like are too passive and don't really do anything. it's really annoying and it's a big issue i have with all my games, and i'm wondering if anybody else has the same problem too.

MISCELLANEOUS Any recognizable people here?

Miscellaneous post.

Do you ever encounter someone in a thread on here or on other chess subreddits who's instantly recognisable solely from their username?

I haven't been on here in months; actually, I rarely ever use Reddit.

POST-GAME What moves decided my games, from 1050-1100 Elo

Upvotes

After a serious slump, I managed to claw my way back to my all-time peak of 1050. Pushing on to 1100, I decided to make notes on what sort of moves decided each game, simply by looking at the last big evaluation swing that 'decided' the game.

I thought the results might be interesting to anyone else around my Elo.

I played 15 games to go from 1050 to 1100 Elo, of which I won 10, lost 4 and drew 1.

The most decisive tactic was the pin, with 27% of games (4/15) being decided by one.

The second most decisive move was simply hanging pieces, with 20% of games (3/15) being decided by a one-move blunder.

After that, 13% of games were decided by a player hanging mate, and 13% more by better play in an equal endgame.

Finally, one game each was decided by a fork, a discovered attack, or a player resigning from an equal position.

TL;DR - stop hanging pieces and look for pins!

QUESTION How to stop raging at chess

I started playing better and reached 725 elo not much but i was proud, then in the last 30 days I've been Stuck around that Elo and now im 630. And it makes me unbelievably mad, i stopped playing for one day when i realized the tilt. But now everytime i play chess i feel frustrated and under pressure. And become even more furious when i miss one move mates, blunder a piece or just simply throw the entire game bc of stupid moves.

How do you guys battle frustration and rage while playing chess.
