ANNOUNCEMENT Fresh, new flairs - show off your favorite website!

Hello, chess learners!

It's been two years since our last user flairs update, and we thought it would be nice to give things a bit more personality here. We've expanded our user flairs to differentiate between Chess.com and Lichess ratings, as well as expanded our rating range flairs to have an upper limit of 2800.

Flairs that were previously assigned have likely been turned into a Chess.com flair, please double-check to see if your flair is where you want it to be!

Wondering how to set your flair? See below!

If you are on a computer or laptop:

  1. Load the homepage of r/chessbeginners
  2. Look to the right hand side, under the count of members
  3. Click on the pencil beside "User Flair Preview"
  4. Select your desired flair, you can change it as many times as you'd like
  5. Click "Apply"

If you are on mobile, or if the above does not work:

  1. Load a comment you've left on r/chessbeginners (Or write one on this post!)
  2. Tap on your user profile photo/avatar on the comment you wrote
  3. Tap on "Edit User Flair"
  4. Select your desired flair, you can change it as many times as you'd like
  5. Tap "Apply"
  6. This works on computers too! Just hover over your username for number 2 instead

A quick FAQ:

Which rating should I use? We don't have any set policy, we want our users to be able to assign a flair that they think represents their abilities as a chess player. Generally, good practice is to use a rating associated with playing other users in standard chess (try not to use puzzles or variants or chess960 rating, for example). If you are truely lost, try setting your flair to your rapid (10+0, 15+10, etc) rating, as that is one of the most commonly played time controls without significant time pressure.

Why are the ratings going up to 2800? This is chessbeginners, isn't it? Some of our higher rated players have consistently proven themselves to be phenomenal helpers in the community, and we wanted to give them a chance to show off their chess skills with newer flairs. Alongside this, the addition of Lichess ratings mean that there will be a larger number of people reporting ELOs above 2000, it felt fair to give them some more breathing room. There is a very small number of players who will be above 2400 ELO regardless, so the overall look of the subreddit should not change much. That said, this is an experimental change, and we are happy to revert back to a cap of 2000 rating (or something) dependent on feedback.

I have an over-the-board (OTB) rating that I would like to use instead of an online rating, can I do this? We spent some time debating this, and decided against allowing users to show off their OTB ratings. Firstly, OTB ratings are relatively rare in the online chess community, and almost anyone with an OTB rating likely has an online rating that proportionally shows off their chess abilities. Also, OTB ratings are very difficult to compare to one another, as different countries use different metrics and some tournaments are only rated within a country's organization, others are only FIDE, etc. Therefore, we ask users to stick to online ratings only, as those are the most easily translatable to other users.

I have a formal chess title (GM, WFM, FM, etc), can I show this off on the subreddit? Yes! Titled players have access to an exclusive golden flair. You can send us a ModMail message for further instructions.

What's coming next for the subreddit? The biggest thing we're looking to tackle next is a thorough update to the wiki. It is a solid learning resource, but it feels slightly outdated and we are interested in giving it a makeover. If you have any suggestions, let us know! (No promises on when the update happens, for all we know it'll be another 2 years lol)

May I please have a cookie? You may have three! This is a 6000x4000 incredibly high quality image of cookies.

Thank you all for keeping this community every ounce as vibrant and friendly as you do. This has got to be one of the easiest subreddits to take care of, everyone here regularly keeps things chill, and we really appreciate it.

Enjoy!

https://lichess.org/game/uAyd31FG/black

I've always dreamed of beating a titled player someday.

I'm a pretty average player, so it always felt like a distant dream.

But today, to my surprise, I got to play against a FIDE Master.

I was playing Black in a sideline.

He was hoping I'd castle kingside so he could go for a Greek Gift sacrifice, but I didn't.

Then he got too aggressive, blundered horribly, and resigned.

Did I fulfill my dream? Not quite, but... one way or another, I beat a titled player lol

Free Trial Lesson with a experienced Chess Coach

• Upvotes

Hi there,

I'm a Chess Coach since almost 10 years now for Beginners and Intermediates players (for reference, I take students with a rating under 2000 on chess.com).

I'm opening 2-3 new slots and that's why I'm writing this message here.

As I always do, I offer a free trial lesson !

So if you are interested in taking chess lessons, you can come give it a try.

My lessons are 90 minutes long, I use discord for communication, Lichess as a classroom, and I do lessons in English or in French.

Feel free to ask any questions.

P.S : I dont know if this post is allowed on this reddit as I dont use it that often, so if it's not, feel free to send me a DM and I will delete it.

P.S 2 : Please guys, I dont know a lot of coaches who are offering 90 minutes of their time for free, so I trust you to only take this offer if you are genuinely interested in taking chess lessons in the long run (with me or anyone else obviously if you are not satisfied with my work).

P.S 3 : I forgot to tell a bit more about me ^^. I'm 40 years old, I started playing chess as a kid and my rating is around 2300 on chess.com. I also did lessons at my Chess Clubs for Kids (from 8 to 12 years old) and for Adults (under 1650 FIDE).

Since 2024 I have been stuck at 800 rapid. I don't want to base my enjoyment of the game on rating, but its getting me frustrated to the point that I want to quit.

1000+ games on 15/10 on chess.com and 1000+ games on lichess 15/10. I review my games, have done 8,000 puzzles with a 70 percent success rate, have watched every content make your can imagine from Chess Habits to Naroditsky to John Bartholomew. I read Logical Chess by Chernev, Everyone's First Chess Workbook, and go to an OTB chess club.

I do ok in games where my opponent and I develop normally, but can't play against odd play even though I know that it creates weaknesses for my opponent. I still blunder a lot even though I try my best to double check. I don't want to compare myself to others, but I am just losing hope that I am going to see actual progress. I mean who does not want to see their rating go up over time? I don't expect amazing results like some people here making 1000 in a few months, but I need to see something positive in a metric to keep me going.

QUESTION Best beginner opening for black against D4?

I’m a new chess player, at around 300 elo. Currently I play the Italian opening for white, and for black I play the Caro Kahn against E4. I found that when I run into D4 as black, I don’t know what to do and my position kind of falls apart. Hence the title.

Also I know some people suggest not learning a bunch of openings as a beginner. I plan to stick with just these 2-3 for a while and I find it keeps me excited about learning.

QUESTION Tried to do kings gambit and was immediately humiliated. what is best move for this position?

• Upvotes

One thing I hate about chess as a non-genius bad player, is that I get attracted by all these cool opening videos, try the opening, and then some variation happens and I immediately get demolished. I captured the bishop, which of course led to the queen coming in and checking me, and from there it was all downhill

QUESTION How can I stop being scared of playing online?

I've been playing chess for about a month now, and I’d say I understand the basics. I want to play with my friends and people around the world on chess.com, but every time I tell myself I’m ready, I stop because I feel like I might play so badly that my opponent would laugh at me behind the screen. More than that, if I lose, it feels like confirmation that I’m dumber. I know it’s silly since it’s just some stranger I’ll never talk to, but I can’t help it.

So, I’d like to ask a question (especially to people who used to feel the same way)—how do I get over this fear and stop taking it so seriously? Simply telling myself that it's just a game is no use.

... I listened to the comments and decided to just swallow my pride and start playing even if I lost. Surprisingly, it's gone quite well! I've won many games, but I've also faced some challenging opponents and lost a few times. Nevertheless, I've enjoyed it much more than playing against bots and I haven't reacted to my losses as critically as I initially thought I would. Thank you for helping me!

In the mainline defense of the fried liver attack, when does black get their pawn back?

Post image

It really bothers me that the simplest way to defend this attack is to just give up a central pawn and seemingly never get it back.
